Role of the Employer

Management of Health and Safety Work Regulations (HSE, 1992) requires employers to assess the risks to

employees’ health and safety. Where appropriate, the risks covered might

include the need to protect employees from exposure to reasonably foreseeable

violence.4


Health & Safety at Work Act 1974

• Dual responsibility:

Enables employer and employee to work together to achieve good practice.

• It states:

The employer must ensure so far as is reasonably practicable the health, safety and welfare at work of all his employees.

The employee must take reasonable care for his own and other people’s safety.

Many risk scenarios are predictable and can therefore be avoided through preparation.’
