Cauley Honored for Rivalry WinHamburg coach Pat Cauley was named the Buffalo

Bills / NY National Guard Coach of the Week after hisBulldogs beat archrival Frontier 14-7 last week.

“I’m so proud of these kids for staying together andbattling,” Cauley said. “We got down again.

Frontier scored first when Kevin Hamilton scooped upa fumble and returned it 20 yards for a TD. Hamburganswered later in the first quarter when Mitch Gomolkabroke away for a 60-yard TD run.

Gomolka led the ground game for the Bulldogs as herushed for 187 yards on 18 carries.

“He broke hiscollarbone whenwe were still inshorts and t-shirts,” Cauleysaid. “He’s justnow getting up tofull speed.”

Hamburg tookthe lead whenMark Myles scam-pered 55 yards fora TD in the secondquarter. The wasno scoring afterthe break.

“It was a toughfootball game,”Cauley said.“We’ve been inclose games allyear. Every gamewe’ve played hasbeen a one-pos-session game. Wejust found a way towin this one.”

Hamburg hasbeen battling injuries since the season started... literally.

“We’ve been fighting from the first week,” Cauley said.“We’ve been beat up but we are learning together ascoaches and players.”

Vinny Sardo, the RB with the most experience and themost yards from the 2012 season, injured his knee on thefirst play of the first game of the season.

“That was a tough way to start,” Cauley said. “I thinkhe would have had a great season.”

In fact, Hamburg beat Frontier with third-string QB TomCoyne at the controls of the offense. Starting QB ColinDaly was hurt in the second game. Backup quarterback,Alex Suchan, was hurt in the 18-13 loss to South Park inWeek 6

“Tom played great,” Cauley said. “The kids believed inhim. He plays hard wherever we put him. He’s just a foot-

ball player.”Cauley, in his first season as a varsity football coach,

has never seen anything like the MASH unit that theBulldogs became this season.

“I’ve coached a lot of sports for a lot of seasons,” hesaid. “This has been the most unique situation I haveever seen. It’s been tough but it’s been a credit to thewhole group that we keep fighting. If you keep persisting, you will be rewarded. Friday night, we got that reward. The kids got it done and I am proud of them.”

With the win, Hamburg broke Frontier’s 3-year winningstreak in the rivalryand now leads theseries 30-27-1.

Cauley, a 1984-graduate of SweetHome, played foot-ball, basketballand baseball... andmore.

“I also playedclub hockey,” hesaid. “I left basket-ball practice andwould go playhockey. I nevertold my basketballcoach until yearslater. He neverknew I playedhockey, too. I don’tknow how I everdid my homework.”

While Cauley isa first-year headcoach in varsityfootball, he is hard-ly a raw rookie.

He was thehead varsity basketball coach at Sweet Home for twoseasons because accepting the job at Hamburg where hecoached for 12 years. He has also coached football atHamburg in various capacities for 13 years. In addition,Cauley has coached cross country, track and baseball atHamburg over that time.

The only thing Cauley is really new at is being anAthletic Director... which he was named at Hamburg dur-ing the summer.

“I guess I’m an administrator now,” Cauley said, “butwhat I really am is a coach. That’s where I feel most com-fortable, being around the kids. We have high schoolsports to help students with their growth and enhance theeducational process. The support we have from Hamburgadministration and the community is outstanding.”

The playoffs are upon us. It’s the time of the year when highschool legends are made. Some players will simply add on to alegacy that has been building throughout their careers.

For others, however, there might a single defining momentthat takes them from just being a member of the team tosomeone their peers will talk about for decades at local busi-nesses, reunions, and watering holes.

Having a huge playoff game or making a significant play iswhat people will remember…and we’ve had a few over theyears. Games are sometimes referred by the name of the play-er who made “the play”.

Not many people knew much about about Matt Crandallfrom Cattaraugus-LV until he ranfor 383 yards against MapleGrove at the Ralph. TheTimberwolves win is known asthe “Matt Crandall Game.”

North Tonawanda won aState Title in 2009. During theirplayoff run a little-known backby the name of DarrikBloomfield came up with bigplay after big play on both sidesof the ball. He was known allover the state after he caughtthe game-winning TD pass inthe Lumberjacks’ win over NewRochelle in the NYS title gameat the Carrier Dome.

Andy Wolffe was a seldom-used WR for Iroquois. When star RB Steve Mamak was injuredin the Class A Final, Wolffe was placed into emergency RBduties for the Far West Regionals. Wolffe set all sorts of NYSrecords when he scored 7 TDs in a 71-53 win over Eastridge.

Springville’s “Touchdown Tony” Baker led the Griffins to awin at The Ralph during a blizzard. “Touchdown Tony” is anickname that will stick in people’s minds for a long time!

A key defensive play can solidify one’s status in campuslore. Alden’s Nick Foss broke through the Lackawanna line totrip up Steelers’ QB Christian Smith on a potential game-tying2-point conversion at The Ralph.

Depew’s Greg Osika and Kevin Dudkowski were part of aWildcats team that made a huge goal-line stand against ScottDrosendahl and East Aurora.

Even kickers can provide moment of glory. In 2009, GrandIsland’s Nate Benoit kicked a 42-yard FG in the rain on amuddy field to beat Williamsville South in a playoff game.Clarence’s Stephen Hughes kicked a last-second FG to beatOrchard Park at The Ralph... it was his first-ever FG attempt!

Coaches always preach that someone needs to “step upand make a play.” Sometimes, the play - and the player - willbe remembered forever.

By Mark AdairMedina qualified for the Class B playoffs when they beat

arch-rival Albion 38-31 last weekend.

Before the game even started, Medina coach Eric Valley had

studied the possible tie-breaking scenarios.

“We knew that if we won by 5, we would be in no matter

what happened anywhere

else,” Valley said. “We also

knew that if Amherst beat

Lew-Port, we would be in

if we just won at all.”

With all the playoff

implications, it made the

annual “Doc’s Rock” game

with Albion even more

important than usual.

“It was county bragging

rights,” Valley said, “and a

Sectional spot for the win-

ning team, too.”

The communities are

close enough that most of

the participants know their

rivals pretty well.

“We work out with the

Albion guys all summer,”

Valley said. “A lot of our

kids know their kids and

the coaching staffs get

along really well. There is

so much history behind the

game that it’s still a big

deal to a lot of people

around here.”

While their own game

was in progress, the

Medina coaching staff tried

to keep tabs on Lew-Port,

which had kicked off at

Amherst at 6:00 pm.

“We found out in the

third quarter of our game

that Amherst had won,”

Valley said. “We were winning at the time so we didn’t let the

kids know. We just wanted to finish strong.”

Medina led 38-24 in the fourth quarter but Albion closed the

gap to seven points with less than a minute to play. Medina’s

Drake Grabowski recovered an onside kick to seal the game.

Medina started the year with three straight wins before the

season started to spiral out of control. The Mustangs were buried

by Burgard 51-12 and then lost to Lew-Port and Bennett.

“We regrouped and got back to basics,” Valley said. “We

knew we needed to win and that would have been enough moti-

vation. But, it’s easy to get the kids excited to play Albion.”

Medina is the 4th seed from the B North Division and will

play at Alden this weekend.

“Our goal was to get to Sectionals,” Valley said, “and the

kids are real excited to be in the playoffs. We know Alden is a

very tough team and that we have a very large task ahead of us

but the kids are excited to play.”

Medina has just one player who has ever played in a Section

6 playoff game.

Senior Kyle Barna was a freshman who was called up to the

varsity for Medina’s playoff

loss at Pioneer in 2010.

Barna has rushed for 418

yards this season. He also

leads the Mustangs with 29

receptions for 452 yards and

has scored a team-high 11

TDs.

“He’s a gamer,” Valley

said. “More so than any kid

I have had, he steps up on

gameday. He understands

what it takes to win. We

expect a lot from him and he

constantly delivers.”

Barna plays several posi-

tions for Medina.

“We have him all over

the place,” Valley said. “He

lines at fullback, tailback,

tight end and in the slot. We

put him in motion whenever

possible.”

Barna is all over the field

on defense, too.

“We play him on the

defensive line, at defensive

end, inside and outsie ine-

backer an sometimes at safe-

ty. He also punts for us. He’s

just a hard-mosed football

player.”

Barna has a on amiy his-

tory tied to Medina football.

His father is a Medina grad

who went on to become an

All-American DT at Hobart

College in the early 1980s.

“Kyle’s great-grandfather was a football and lacrosse payer at

Hobart,” Valley said. “They still give out the George Barna

Award at Hobart.”

Barna (6-2, 205) also stars for Medina’s lacrosse team.

“Kyle has a unique blend of agility and power,” Valley said.

“He can run away from people and he can carry three or four

kids for extra yards, too. I coach lacrosse too and he’s in the top

2 or 3 kids I’ve ever coached at Medina.”

Barna, who maintains an academic average above 90, is not a

fiery personality... until the game starts.

“He’s pretty laid back,” Valley said. “Not a lot gets too him

but when he’s on the field he flips a switch. He is super compet-

itive and he just wants to win.”

Barna Gives Medina Horsepower

Medina senior Kyle Barna will play a big role in this week-end’s playoff game at Alden. Barna plays several positionsfor the Mustangs.

Lancaster took a 29-0 lead at the half

and beat archrival Depew 36-0 last week.

“It doesn’t matter record who has the

best record or who is playing well,”

Lancaster coach Chris Dickson said.

“Every other win

lasts a week but

this one will last a

whole year. I’m so

happy for the

seniors that they

can go out knowing

they beat Depew.”

The Redskins

broke a three-game

losing streak in the

series.

“Some of the

seniors in our pro-

gram have never

beaten Depew until

Friday night.”

Dickson said. “It’s

a very big deal to

them.”

One player who

has never beaten

Depew is senior

captain Matt

Szymanski.

“Matt had not beaten Depew on the

modified or varsity,” Dickson said. “His

dad went to Depew and Matt said that his

dad busted his chops a bit this week.”

Szymanski rushed for 100 yards ad 2

TDs on just 5 carries, including a high-

light-reel 68-yard run. He also returned a

fumble 78 yards for another TD.

“Matt is one of the most explosive

players I have coached,” Dickson said.

“When he gets the ball in his hands, he

hits the hole and

he’s just gone.”

Lancaster is the

fifth seed in Class

AA and will play at

Kenmore West in

the first round of

the playoffs. The

Redskins beat

Kenmore West 22-7

in Week 1 this year.

“We can’t expect

to go back in there

and do it again just

because we did it

before,” Dickson

said. “Kenmore

West has a lot of

talent and we are

going to have to

play well.”

Szymanski is

one of the Redskins

leading tacklers.

“He just brings it on defense,” Dickson

said. “When he gets to the ball carrier, he

is going to unload on him.”

Szymanski (5-11, 200) is a solid stu-

dent and a leader on the field.

“He’s a quiet leader,” Dickson said,

“but he has a great passion for the game.”

42-0 last weekend.

“Our playmakers just didn’t make

Chimera said. “We

knew that they

were a very good

football team. We

had some opportu-

ities early in the

game but we didn’t

sistent going on

Kenmore East

will now have to

shake off the loss

and get ready for

the Class A play-

The last time

the Bulldogs made

the playoffs was 13

years ago after the

2000 season.

“This is a big

deal,” Chimera

said. “We’re excit-

ed about it. We circled that at the begin-

ning of the year. Our first goal is always

to make the Section 6 playoffs. We won

the Bowl series twice in the last few years

but this is the next step.”

The Bulldogs will play at Sweet Home

in the first round of the Class A tourney.

Kenmore East lost to Sweet Home 34-6 in

Week 6.

“We were in it right up until the end of

the third quarter,” Chimera said. “We

trailed 7-6 until late in the third quarter.

We’ll see what we

can do.”

If the Bulldogs

are going to pull off

an upset and beat

Sweet Home, they

will need a big

game from junior

LB Kurt McGowan.

“Kurt is one of

the hardest working

kids we have,”

Chimera said. “He

works hard to get

better every day.”

McGowan was

one of the Bulldogs

top players as

Kenmore East won

the Class A Chuck

Funke Tournament

in 2012.

“He was a big

player for us,”

Chimera said. “He rushed for over 100

yards in the semifinal.”

McGowan, a junior, is the Bulldogs

leading tackler.

“He got noticeably faster this year,”

Chimera said. “He’s a real quiet kid but

he’s a tough kid and very focused.”

Williamsville North lost to Grand

Island 30-15 last weekend in the final reg-

ular-season game.

The Spartans trailed 16-15 at the half

and Grand Island scored two TDs in the

fourth quarter to

put the game away.

“They were as

good as any team

we’ve played this

year,” North coach

Mike Mammoliti

said. “They have a

really good running

game. It was good

game to play to get

ready for the play-

offs.”

Williamsville

North is the 7th

seed in Class A and

will play at South

Park on Friday.

The Spartans last

qualified for the

playoffs in 2011.

“Most of our

kids were sopho-

mores then,”

Mammoliti said. “Our seniors put in a lot

of work over those two years to bring the

program up. They have bought into every-

thing about the off-season work, the con-

ditioning work and all the camps that we

went to.”

The Spartans struggled with a young

lineup last year.

“We played with 6 sophomores and a

freshman in the starting lineup last year,”

Mammoliti said. “In four of our losses,

we were winning or in the game late in

the 4th quarter. That

experience is pay-

ing off this year.”

If the Spartans

are going to

advance in the play-

offs, they will rely

on senior captain

Derick Isler to carry

the load.

Isler leads the

team with 627

yards and 6 TDs.

“There isn’t any

one thing that

stands out,”

Mammoliti said.

“He does every-

thing well. He has

great vision, he can

set up blocks and

make cuts without

losing speed. He

has been a very

good blocking back in pass protection.”

Isler (5-10, 180) also starts at LB.

“He can stick his nose in and be physi-

cal,” Mammoliti said. “He’s an all-around

player. He’s really respected by his team-

mates. He’s a leader by example because

he’s so dependable.”

arch-rival West Seneca West the previous

week. The Trojans led just 7-0 until late

in the game.

“Rivalry games

are always close,”

West Seneca East

coach Jim Maurino

said. “You really

have to throw the

records out the

window. The West

kids stepped up

and played well but

we did what we

needed to do.”

The victory

over Hutch Tech

was exactly how

Maurino wanted

his team to enter

the playoffs.

“We are just try-

ing to get on a roll

before the play-

offs,” he said. “We

had a great week

of practice and the kids played well.”

West Seneca East is the 5th seed in

Class A and will play at Williamsville

South in the first round of the playoffs.

The Trojans will also get a boost from

the return of QB Devin Lindner, who

missed most of the last two games with

an ankle injury.

“We’re glad to have Devin back,”

Maurino said, “but we still need to focus

and play well. We need to know our

assignments, finish our blocks and tackle

well.”

If the Trojans

are going to

advance in the play-

offs, they will need

a big performance

from senior DE

Brandon Reilly.

“He is tough and

disciplined,”

Maurino said.

“Especially on

defense, he’s a very

disciplined player.”

Reilly (6-3, 200)

also starts at OT for

the Trojans.

“He is a great

drive blocker and a

pass protector,”

Maurino said. “He

has started every

game at right tackle

for the last 3 years.”

Reilly, a team captain, was an

Honorable Mention selection on the All-

WNY team in 2012.

“He’s a tremendous leader by exam-

ple,” Maurino said. “He’s very reliable

and a good, solid student. He’s been a

part of 20 wins in his 3 years on varsity.”

Bennett rolled up 442 rushing yards

and finished the regular season with a 48-

20 win over Barker last weekend.

“It was a pretty good game for our

line,” Bennett coach Steve McDuffie said.

“We use a lot of

running backs. We

had over 400 yards

and nobody had a

100-yard day.”

Bennett had

four 80-yard TD

drives in the first

half.

“It was all run-

McDuffie said.

“We had two backs

and we had several

touchdowns called

McDuffie has

been the head

coach at Bennett

for three seasons

and the Tigers have

made the playoffs

twice. In 2011, the

Tigers lost the Class A semifinal to Sweet

“None of these kids were on that

Bennett will play at Depew this week-

“Depew has a huge offensive line and

they are a tough

team,” McDuffie

said.

If the Tigers are

going to get past

Depew, they will

need a big night

Paul Dixon.

“He’s a very

McDuffie said.

“He’s one of the

fastest kids on our

at 4.37 in the 40.”

Dixon (5-10,

187) also starts at

LB and is one of

Bennett’s leading

tacklers.

“He’s an even-

keeled kid,”

McDuffie said.

“Nothing seems to bother him.”

Dixon is also Bennett’s Salutatorian,

ranking 2nd in his class academically

with a 97.5 academic average.

“He’s a great kid,” McDuffie said.

“He’s a very focused kid and he’s also a

great teammate.”

Pioneer lost their final regular-season

game to Eden 28-14 last weekend.

“They outgained us by a massive

amount,” Pioneer coach Jim Duprey said.

“We couldn’t stop their offense. Our

offense made way

too many mistakes.

It was not a very

good way to go

into the playoffs.”

Eden led 21-0 at

the half. Pioneer

closed the gap in

the third quarter

but could never get

closer than 14

points.

“If you don’t

play well, you

don’t deserve to

win,” Duprey said.

“Eden deserved it.”

Pioneer will

play Burgard this

week at 2:30 pm

Saturday at All-

High Stadium.

Duprey will be try-

ing to get the

Panthers ready for a physical game.

“We telling our kids to refocus,”

Duprey said. “If we don’t match

Burgard’s intensity, we will be in real

trouble. Burgard is a great team and we

know it will be a great challenge for us.”

If Pioneer is going to get past Burgard

and advance in the Class B playoffs, they

will need big games from senior Justin

Bliss.

“He is a 3-year starter,” Duprey said.

“Last year, Justin was first-team all-

league at defensive

end.”

Bliss, a team

captain, also starts

at TE and handles

the punting and

kicking duties.

“He has a great

athletic ability,”

Durey said. “He’s

got great hands,

too. He can really

catch the ball and

he’s averaging 18

yards per catch.”

Bliss (6-5, 205)

has returned three

INTs for TDs in his

career at Pioneer.

“His size helps,”

Duprey said. “He

returned one as a

sophomore, one as a

junior and one this

year. That’s rare for a defensive end.”

Bliss has also kicked 3 FGs this sea-

son, winning two games and is averaging

over 44 yards per punt.

“He is one of the best punters I have

ever had,” Duprey said. “and he’s a very

clutch kicker.”

Tonawanda trailed just 18-13 at the

half and lost to North Tonawanda 45-21

last weekend.

The Warriors, who lost to their arch-

rival by a field goal in 2012, have no

played two straight

solid games against

North Tonawanda.

“When I got

here four years ago

people were talking

about ending the

rivalry,”

Tonawanda coach

Rob Gross said.

“We said we need-

ed to make the

game competitive.

Kids have come in

and competed. Any

talk of ending the

rivalry has disap-

peared.”

The Warriors

also took another

step this season as

they qualified for

the Class B play-

offs for the first

time since 2004.

“We’ve made some good steps,” Gross

said. “Making the playoffs is a major step

forward for us. Our guys worked hard in

the off-season and during the summer to

achieve that goal.”

Tonawanda will now plat ay top-seed-

ed Fredonia and Gross says that his play-

ers are looking forward to the challenge.

“Our guys are competitors who empty

the tank every night,” Gross said. “They

will try to be successful on every single

play. They won’t

take plays off, no

matter what.”

If Tonawanda is

going to upset

Fredonia, they will

need a big night

from senior LB

Paul Palladino.

“He was a fresh-

man when I got

here,” Gross said.

“I told them they

could make the

playoffs if they

worked hard. He’s a

team captain and

sets the example for

our guys in the

weight room and

with his off-season

attendance.”

Palladino is an

emotional leader on

the field.

“He’s fiery and focused,” Gross said.

“He knows how to get guys to respond.”

Palladino has a high academic average.

“He’s a solid student,” Gross said.

“He’ll be nominated as a Scholar-Athlete

Southwestern led 21-16 at the half and

beat arch-rival Falconer 35-16 last week-

end. It was the 17th straight year that

Southwestern won the annual game.

Despite the lopsided stretch in the series,

Southwestern coach

Jay Sirianni says

the rivalry is still

strong.

“I played at

Southwestern,” he

said, “and three of

my assistant coach-

es played here.

We’ve been a part

of this rivalry and

it’s still important

to all of us.”

Sirianni also

says that the game

is important to both

communities.

“It’s a big rival-

ry,” he said, “and

rivalries are fun.

They stand up and

stand out because

they last for a long

period of time.”

Southwestern will now play at Akron

in the first round of the Class C playoffs.

“Akron is good,” Sirianni said. “We

played them last year. Right now the

score is 0-0 and we have a shot. You earn

you way into the playoffs and this is why

you want to compete all season.”

If Southwestern is going to advance in

the Class C playoffs, they will need a big

night from lineman Kyle Moran, a 3-year

starter at OT and DE..

“Kyle started in a state championship

game as a sopho-

more,” Sirianni

said. “He’s played

in big games and

he’s a big reason

for our success this

year.”

Moran is a team

captain.

“Kyle has taken

ownership of the

leadership role,”

Sirianni said. “He

has stepped up and

done a great job as

a captain.”

Moran (6-1, 205)

is one of the Trojans

leading tacklers.

“He was bigger

as a sophomore,”

Sirianni said, “but

he slimmed down

and put on more

muscle. I think it’s made him faster.”

Moran is a high-achieving student. He

is a member of the national Honor

Society and on the Student Council.

“He’s a really nice young man,” Sirianni

said. “He also starts on the basketball team

and is a very good character kid.”

Ellicottville ended the regular season

with a 22-7 win over Nichols last week-

end. The Eagles led 22-0 at the half.

“We have struggled to move the ball

offensively all year,” Ellicottville coach

Chad Bartoszek

said. “It was nice to

come out in the first

half and move the

ball like we did.”

Ellicottville may

have won by a larg-

er margin but the

Eagles lost two

fumbles through the

end zone.

“That hurt us,”

Bartoszek said. “We

had a 97-yard drive,

our best drive of the

year, that ended

with losing a fum-

ble in the end zone.

We have to focus

on ball security.”

Bartoszek was

pleased with the

play of the eagles

linemen.

“We talked about how we needed to

win the battle up front,” he said, “and the

linemen accepted that challenge and did

well.”

Ellicottville will now host Cassadaga

Valley in the first round of the Class D

playoffs.

“We played them in Week 1 and it was

a tough game,” Bartoszek said. “Cassadaga

Valley has some nice size. They are big

and physical. There will be no skating

through this game.”

If the Eagles are

going to advance in

the Class D play-

offs, they will need

another big game

from senior lineman

Dylan Paprocki.

“He’s a tough

kid and a disci-

plined player,”

Bartoszek said. “He

cares about the

game and he wants

to succeed.”

Paprocki starts at

MLB for the Eagles.

“He plays hard

and he has great

feet,” Bartoszek

said. “He’s a big kid

who can move,

which is why he is

playing middle line-

backer.”

Paprocki (6-2, 230) also starts at G on

the offensive line.

We have been having him pull a little

more,” Bartoszek said. “He’s good at it.

He’d make a heck of a guard or center at

the next level because college coaches

want athletic guys on the line.”

Panama led 7-6 at the half but lost to

Sherman 20-7 last week. The Panthers

lost the division title on a wild weekend

in Class DD that saw four teams with a

chance to win the title on the last day.

“That’s why we

wanted to do the

DD league two

years ago,” Panama

coach Chris Payne

said. “It was a very

exciting. Every

other league was

already decided but

we didn’t know

who was going to

win our league

until 4:30 on

Saturday.”

Sherman won

league title.

The Panthers

did not handle the

mud bowl that the

field at Sherman

turned into by the

end of the game.

“It was awful

field conditions for

both teams,” Payne said. “We lost three

fumbles. We lost one on our own 1-yard

line.”

Panama ended the season as the third-

seeded team in Class DD and will play at

Catt-LV in the first round of the playoffs.

“We have been in the semi’s the last 3

years,” Payne said. “We want to take the

next step and get to the Stadium.”

If Panama is going to get to The

Ralph, they will need a big day from

Payne’s son Bryce, who starts at QB for

the Panthers.

“He’s been pret-

ty consistant,” Chris

Payne said. “he

runs the Wing-T

pretty well.”

Payne says his

son has had to deal

with a lot of friction

in his three years on

the varsity.

“He’s a very

team-oriented guy

and wants the team

to do well,” he said.

“Last year, we lost

and it all focused

on him and I. He

has had a lot of

pressure on him

because of me.

Sometimes it’s dif-

ficult but we leave

it at practice.”

Bryce Payne is a member of the

National Honor Society with an academic

average in the high 90s.

“He also played doubles tennis with

his brother Jack,” Chris Payne said.

“They won the County and were one win

from going to the states.”

Nichols lost the final home of the sea-

son 22-7 to Ellicottville 22-7 last week.

“Ellicottville had a great game against

us,” Nichols coach Colin Brinson said.

“Their line is deep and athletic. They

started to wear us

down a bit.”

The Big Green

will play one final

game to end the

season when they

travel to

Franklinville this

weekend.

We picked up

the 5th seed in

DD,” Brinson said.

“We did it last year

too and it’s a good

matchup. We are

happy to play any-

one who will

schedule us.”

Nichols strug-

gled with a very

young lineup this

season. They have

just three seniors

on the whole team.

“We love those seniors,” Brinson said,

“but we are trying to build with some

younger guys. Hopefully, this season is

part of a progression that will last multi-

ple years.”

Brinson was pleased with the progress

his team showed this season.

“We’ve had two very good wins and

we almost beat O’Hara,” he said. “We

have been very competitive with a young

group of guys who gave us everything

they had.”

Mike Geiger

will play his final

game for Nichols

when they play

Franklinville.

“He starts at

halfback and safety

for us,” Brinson

said. “He has speed,

toughness and intel-

ligence.”

Geiger (5-11,

185) has rushed for

483 yards this fall,

which leads the Big

Green. He has also

made 42 tackles

which is third on

the squad.

“He is a 3-sport

athlete at Nichols,”

Brinson said. “He

also plays hockey

and lacrosse.”

Geiger also has a 4.26 GPA.

“He is a true scholar and he is hoping

to advance his education at the Ivy

League level,” Brinson said. “He is not

looking to advance his football career.

He’s a wonderful student athlete and a

great leader.”

CTF’s vision is to develop the hearts of coaches andathletes to be men of character for others.

This Week in the ANSWER THE CALL process is theword Hope.

Hope is a belief or expectation that is good and obtain-able. Now these three remain Faith, Hope and Love.

Hope believes when evidence is eliminated. Hope isthe character trait that brings life during dark times. I love thefollowing truth pertaining to hope: Difficulty produces perse-verance and perseverance produces character. Hope doesnot disappoint because of Love.

Hope is throwing that pass before the receiver makes thecut. It is running hard to the hole before the trap block getsthere. Trusting your teammate will do his job!

Without character there is no hope. Men of character arefinishers. When it comes to Hope it means putting your faithin something bigger than yourself.

That leads us to the team. Love sacrifices when no oneelse will. It is a man laying down his life for a friend. There isalways Hope because love never fails.

So when the Clouds are the darkest and there is no light, what will you put your trust in?

Athlete I just want to encourage you to remember thatLOVE NEVER FAILS and love is willing to give when no oneelse is willing to share. That is hope.

Love Never Fails! Coach Masters

Finding A SparkBy Mark Adair

South Park beatCardinal O’Hara 44-0 lastweekend to finish theseason with a 6-1 record.

The Sparks won the ASouth Division and willhost Williamsville Norththis weekend in the ClassA playoffs.

The road that theSparks and South Parkcoach Tim Delaney trav-eled to this point isincredible. Back inAugust, no one thoughtSouth Park would beanywhere near the play-offs.

“It’s been pretty wild,”Delaney said. “We justhope we can keep win-ning now.”

The troubles at Southpark started in April whenstar quarterback MauriceHowie was arrested formurder.

“I think the best way todescribe that situation isdevastating,” Delaneysaid. “It was devastatingto me as a coach and itwas devastating to mepersonally.”

Delaney had coachedHowie since the QB wasan eighth grader.

“Maurice started doing stuff with us as an 8th grader,”Delaney said. “That’s rare in the city. A lot of times we don’tknow who is going to be on the team until they actuallyenroll in school in August. We knew Maurice was coming toSouth Park so we started working with that spring.”

Howie worked harder than most kids.“We spent a lot of time doing things with our program

and he also did a lot of personal training,” Delaney said.“He went above and beyond what most kids do.”

Throughout Howie’s three years as South Park’s QB,Delaney grew close to Maurice and the boy’s father.

“We got really close,” Delaney said. “When I got thenews that he was arrested, it was just devastating. I would

feel that way with any ofour kids but, withMaurice, there were nosigns of anything like thiswas going to happen. Nosigns whatsoever.”

While Howie’s storywas the most shocking,Delaney also had otherplayers who were travel-ing difficult roads.

Starting RT BrianSlisz was went into drugre-hab for sixth months.

“He had a problemwith marijuana and syn-thetic marijuana,”Delaney said. “He wasable to go to the KidsEscaping Drugs programfor six months. I stayedin contact with his auntand she always told usthat brian wanted tocome back to school anddo well at South Park.”

Slisz graduated fromthe program in July andrejoined the Sparks.

“You can tell he is achanged kid,” Delaneysaid. “He’s sober now.And he views the worlddifferently than he did.”

All this turmoil mightbe enough to destroy

many football programs. But for Delaney, and many otherinner-city coaches, the stories weren’t so unusual.

“This really isn’t that crazy for us,” Delaney said.“Something happens to us every day. Every single day, something happens. Every one of our kids has a story.”

Delaney does not wish to make it sound that the chal-lenges at the inner-city programs are insurmountable.

“Not everything is negative,” he said. “We have a kidwho has to take care of his 75-year-old foster mother. Wehave a kid taking night classes so he can graduate. Ifeverything was always negative, none of us would beable to do it for very long.”

So, perhaps it is not so unusual that South Park’s

South Park QB Tyler Mascio has passed for 1,143 yards and 9 TDsas he has led the Sparks to a 6-1 record this fall. The Sparks willplay Williamsville North in the Class A playoffs this week.

newest QB ended up with the Sparks.Tyler Mascio, who played QB for Canisius in 2012 as

the Crusaders finished 11-0 and ranked #1 in the state, has passed for 1,143 yards and 9 TDs. He has also giventhe Sparks an incredibly good QB when they originallythought there would be a glaring hole in the lineup.

“I think Tyler would have been one of the top five play-ers in Western New York if he had come back withCanisius,” Delaney said. “But...”

Mascio’s travels are well known. In October, during themiddle of the Canisius football season, his father DavidMascio pled guilty to stealing $13,000 from the LakeshoreYouth Football Program. He was sentenced to five yearsprobation.

Tyler dropped out of Canisius in January and went backto Lake Shore but it didn’t work out there either. He leftLake Shore when the family moved to Buffalo and heenrolled at South Park in August.

“I didn’t know him personally,” Delaney said. “I had seenhim play at Canisius and we knew he could play.Obviously, we were happy to have him. He’s just a flat-out,straight-up, good football player.”

And, the personal issues have not come into play at all.“He has had no issue with us whatsoever,” Delaney

said. “He’s at school every day. I have him in class and Ican tell you that he hands his work in on time and doeswhat he has to do. He has fit in with our kids just fine.”

Delaney said that South Park may have been a betterplace for Mascio once the family’s troubles became so public.

“I’m sure everything that happened was embarrassingfor him,” Delaney said, “but we’ve never talked about anyof it. It really doesn’t matter to us. What matters to us iswhat happens here. And he’s been a great kid.”

Delaney says that, unlike the private-school atmosphereat Canisius or the small-community atmosphere at LakeShore, Mascio’s family problems really aren’t that big of adeal at South Park.

“Believe me, every single one of our kids has somethinggoing on,” he said. “I don’t think any of them concernthemselves with what you have going on because they allhave their own issues to worry about.”

And, as Mascio has grown more comfortable at school,he has flourished on the football field.

“I believe he could be a scholarship player for a DivisionII program,” Delaney said, “and I think he would be supersuccessful at a Division III program. He’s a good kid. I justthink he needed some direction and a place where he did-n’t have to be the big man on campus for a while.”

Delaney says that the hardest part about coaching atSouth Park is remembering that his players, despite havingso many adult problems, are still just teenagers.

“Our kids are very grown up,” Delaney said. “But wehad our Homecoming dance last week and you can seehow excited they were. They still just want to be kids. Theystill want to play football on Friday night. They still want tohave fun in school and have a girlfriend. They still havedreams just like any other kids.”

2013Starpoint beat Iroquois 20-0 last

weekend to improve 2-5 on the sea-son. While the Spartans will not beplaying in the upcoming playoffs, theywill play two more games.

“Most football coaches never wantit to end,” Starpoint coach AlCavagnaro said. “Win, lose or drawwe never want it to end.”

Cavagnarosaid that his play-ers also want toplay.

“The kids havebeen working forthe season sincethe Monday afterThanksgiving,” hesaid. “My seniorswill never getanother chance toplay and thisgives them 2more games toplay. It gives me 2more weeks to bewith my seniors.”

Although it didnot work out ashe had hoped,Cavagnaro hasenjoyed the sea-son. And, despiteinjuries thatwrecked the sea-son, his players never lost theirdesire to keep playing.

“After we were eliminated from theplayoffs, we had the best practice ofthe year,” Cavagnaro said. “It wouldhave been easy for them to pack it in,but they didn’t.”

Senior RB Evan Majewski rushedfor 127 yards and a TD in the winover Iroquois. It was Majewski’s firstsigniifcant action since the Week 1loss to Lockport.

“If Evan is healthy, we’re in theplayoffs and he’s up for All-WNY,”Cavagnaro said.

Majewski was named an All-WNYplayer in 2012. Entering the 2013season, he had rushed for 35 careerTDs and was just 1,100 yards awayfrom the school’s all time rushingrecord.

“We just assumed he would getthat by Week 4,” Cavagnaro said. “Heholds every other rushing record

here.”Majewski suf-

fered a badlypulled hamstringon the third playof the secondgame of the sea-son.

“Evan wasgoing around theright side,”Cavagnaro said.“He was runningdown the side-lines and it waslike somebodyshot him with agun and droppedhim.”

Majewskimissed the nextthree games com-pletely.

“You practice alot of things dur-ing the season,”

Cavagnaro said, “but you don’t prac-tice playing without your best player.”

Majewski was a leader in additionto being the Spartans best player.

“He always know’s what to say to ateammate,” Cavagnaro said. “He ledthem in the weight room. He’s been aleader since he was a sophomore.”

Majewski has an academic aver-age over 90.

“Yes, he will play college football,”Cavagnaro said. “I am sure of that. Some college program will get a verygood player on either side of theball.”

It’s not the critic who counts.

Not the man who points out wherethe strong man stumbled or wherethe doer of deeds could have donethem better.

The credit belongs to the man marred by the dust and the sweat and the blood;

who strives valiantly; who errs and comes short again and again and again...

...who at best knows,in the end, the triumphof high achievements and who, at the worst, if he fails at least fails while daring greatly,

so that his place will never be with those cold timid souls who know neither victory or defeat.

- Theodore Roosevelt
