Project Goals Stakeholders Rein in the Runoff is an Integrated Assessment of stormwater management alternatives available to the communities surrounding Spring Lake (MI). A multidisciplinary team is identifying the causes, consequences, and corrective actions necessary to minimize the negative impacts of stormwater runoff on Spring Lake, the Grand River, and ultimately Lake Michigan. An Integrated Assessment is the application of social, economic, and environmental scientific knowledge to a policy question, utilizing input from and providing education to stakeholders. The policy question for this project is: What stormwater management alternatives are available to the municipalities surrounding Spring Lake (MI) and throughout the Spring Lake Watershed that allow for future development and also lessen the impacts of stormwater and improve the water quality of Spring Lake, the Grand River, and Lake Michigan? Increase residents' and decision-makers' general knowledge and understanding of the causes and consequences of stormwater runoff, and how they apply locally Increase stakeholder stewardship of water resources, including greater participation in stormwater control and management Identify inconsistencies between state regulations and/or local ordinances that can improve local stormwater management and control Provide a suite of alternative stormwater management Best Management Practices (BMPs) tailored to municipalities in the Spring Lake Watershed Participation from stakeholders and citizens throughout the Spring Lake Watershed and its adjacent communities has been an integral component of the Rein in the Runoff project. The project team offered a variety of educational opportunities about stormwater and stormwater runoff at public meetings and community events, to school groups and professional organizations, and on the project website: . Community members have provided their input to the project team on specific concerns or locations regarding stormwater runoff and water pollution through their participation on the Stakeholder Steering Committee, comments on the website, and participation in the Water Quality Survey. http://www.gvsu.edu/wri/reinintherunoff 3

What is Rein in the Runoff?

What is an Integrated Assessment?

Project Goals

Stakeholders

Rein in the Runoff is an Integrated Assessment of stormwater management alternatives available to the communities surroundingSpring Lake (MI). A multidisciplinary team is identifying the causes, consequences, and corrective actions necessary to minimize thenegative impacts of stormwater runoff on Spring Lake, the Grand River, and ultimately Lake Michigan.

An Integrated Assessment is the application of social, economic, and environmental scientific knowledge to a policy question, utilizing input from and providing education to stakeholders. The policy question for this project is:

What stormwater management alternatives are available to the municipalities surrounding Spring Lake (MI) and throughoutthe Spring Lake Watershed that allow for future development and also lessen the impacts of stormwater and improve the

water quality of Spring Lake, the Grand River, and Lake Michigan?

Increase residents' and decision-makers' general knowledge and understanding of the causes and consequences of stormwaterrunoff, and how they apply locallyIncrease stakeholder stewardship of water resources, including greater participation in stormwater control and managementIdentify inconsistencies between state regulations and/or local ordinances that can improve local stormwater management and controlProvide a suite of alternative stormwater management Best Management Practices (BMPs) tailored to municipalities in the Spring LakeWatershed

Participation from stakeholders and citizens throughout the Spring Lake Watershed and its adjacent communities has been an integralcomponent of the Rein in the Runoff project. The project team offered a variety of educational opportunities about stormwaterand stormwater runoff at public meetings and community events, to school groups and professional organizations, and on the projectwebsite: . Community members have provided their input to the project team on specificconcerns or locations regarding stormwater runoff and water pollution through their participation on the Stakeholder Steering Committee, comments on the website, and participation in the Water Quality Survey.
