DESCRIPTION

This is a power point presentation I made for my Crime Prevention class at Miami Dade College. It is the first power point presentation that I made without the help of others. It is a presentation of the crime that is going on in my neighborhood during the year of 2010 and ways that we could prevent those crimes from occurring again.

Crime Prevention? The “broken window” theory by James Q. Wilson and George

Kelling suggest that neighborhood order strategies can help deter and reduce crime, because a disorderly neighborhood is more appealing to criminals while a well maintained one is not.

Fix broken fencesand windows

Keep neighborhood clean

Paint over graffiti

Auto Thefts & Vehicle Burglaries To protect your car and make it less appealing to criminals:

Don’t leave a spare key in the car. Make sure the door is locked and windows are closed. Park in your driveway or garage, not on the side of the house or across

the street on an empty plot of land, or in a poorly lit area. When parking, turn your wheels completely around to make it difficult

for a thief to tow your car. This can also easily set off an alarm if they try!

Don’t leave packages or expensive items in your car. Install an alarm or anti-theft device.

Residential Burglaries (CPTED) Crime Prevention Through Environmental Design – make

changes to areas that may contribute to problems. Adding an extra dome lamp in the front yard, motion sensor lights near

entry points of the home, ensure the home address is posted and visible from the street, and to trim trees/shrubs to make entrances visible.

Ensure the home is secure. Locking windows, gates, entrance doors, and sliding doors; and fix them

if they have any cracks, warps, broken locks, or other damage. Get an alarm or a dog (or both).

Have signs posted and make sure the alarm works.

Residential Burglaries Report to police suspicious people hanging around the neighborhood. Report to FP&L street lights not working, and damaged poles. Consider hiring security.

They can find and report many of the problems that go unnoticed by residents, and help to deter and prevent crime by their presence.

Going on vacation? Put alarm on. Inform someone you trust to check on the home, put garbage cans out,

park their car at different spots of the driveway, pick up newspapers, etc.

Set automatic timers to turn on and off at random times.

Robbery & Personal Crimes To prevent yourself from becoming a victim of a robbery or other attack:

Before entering an area, give it a brief survey. Trust your gut – if a situation does not feel right, leave the area. Be aware of your surroundings. Walk confidently and be alert to who is around. Don’t walk around alone at night. Walk in groups or with a big dog. Carry your keys in hand and pepper spray if you have. Change your routine, but know the area that you are in and keep a map

with you in case you get lost when taking a different route.

Robbery & Personal Crimes Gun Bounty Program.

Goal is to get weapons and criminals off the street by reaching out to individuals who know someone with an illegal firearm.

Persons can call Miami-Dade Crime Stoppers (305) 471-8477 to report persons illegally possessing a gun and may earn a $1,000 reward.

Domestic Violence. Call Police. Get a restraining order. Take self-defense classes and carry pepper spray. Inform trusted friends and relatives.
