School 21’s Scientific Journey to the Centre of the Cell

On Tuesday, 4th December, our students went on their first Science trip to visit local laboratory and research centre, Centre of the Cell. Through a series of interactive instalments and vide-os, students learned about different types of cells and found out how research is being used to find treatments to illnesses such as cancer and genetic disorders such as blindness.

At school, students continued their work on cells, making some fantastic models of animal and plant cells. It was near impossi-ble to choose the best ones but a special well done goes out to Laura Kristapaite , Destinee Hassan-Bien and Marcella Keating, Ifte Chowdhury, Benyamin Babayani and Stacy Odogwu-Sinclair and to Farah Ravat, India Rao and Shammila Sheikh for their animal cell and plant cell models which showed great craftsmanship and attention to detail. Well done!

On Wednesday morning as part of the Hurri-cane Katrina project based learning activity, all of our students had the opportunity to attend a dance workshop that was run by a member of the word famous ZooNation dance company. The guest teacher Rowen Hawkins has also appeared on Top of the Pops, BBC, ITV, CD:UK, Children In Need, Comic Relief, Brit Awards, MOBOs, MTV Eu-ropean Awards, Sky, Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire, Britain’s Got Talent, Popworld and Channel 4.

The students worked on an original dance piece that represented the hot and cold air of the hurricane that came together with destructive forc-es. Students also had the opportuni-ty to talk with Rowen about his ca-reer and the intensive training that he went through.

Students left the room with big smiles after an inspiring ses-sion, many asking when he was going to return for part 2.

The Day the Waters Came As you know pupils watched a play last Friday that explored the events surrounding Hurricane Katrina. Since then pupils have been involved in a whole range of activi-ties that have allowed them to develop a range of learning styles. On Monday they carried out a Philosophy for Children inquiry exploring the ethical issues raised by the play. On Wednesday they spent the morning exploring further taking part in a carousel that involved Geography, Maths. ICT; Dance; Poetry as well as creating a display. On Friday, pupils started to write a critical analysis of moments from the play in order to develop their ability to reflect and evaluate. It's been a challenging week! Please talk to your child about it, they have a lot to say! We hope to share some of this work with you in our end of term celebration assembly.

This Tuesday students were taught about the im-portance of creativity in an assembly about 'Spark', one of our key personal attributes. They explored how spark - the ability to ask what if? - can be used in both problem solving contexts and through artistic expression. By the end of the assembly, coaching groups had transformed their coach into a fashion model using everyday recycled materials and fabrics, showing great spark and imagination.

A whole lot of spark!
