Deadline for next newsletter articles:

Newsletter for March
Good things are happening. Good things are coming. Good things are being done. And we get to be part of it! ONE: The Newton County School System is engaged in a poverty initiative aimed at ameliorating the consequences poverty has on children and their education. I have attended meetings with the Superintendent, Samantha Fuhrey. A duplicate of the last meeting I attended is scheduled for 10:00 AM on Friday, March 3rd, at the Porterdale Performing Arts Center, up the hill from Porterdale Elementary School. I’ve been encouraged to recruit and invite concerned members of the community to attend that meeting. I’m going and I’d love for you to join me. TWO: The United Methodist Church, through the Upper Room (the global spiritual formation ministry of the United Methodist Church which publishes the daily devotional resource that shares its name), offers a weekend retreat called The Walk to Emmaus. I attended The Walk to Emmaus as a 20-something; Dad, as a 40-something. We’ve worked dozens of weekends since attending the weekend ourselves. We’ve both served on the boards of local Emmaus Communities. It is a ministry that has made a difference in our own lives and which we have seen make a difference in the lives of many of our friends and loved ones. If you find yourself at all curious about The Walk to Emmaus, there a number of people here at Salem who have attended. I am sure that they, like Dad or I, would be delighted tell you more about it. I mention that in this edition of the newsletter because on the first two weekends in March, Salem United Methodist Church and the Salem Campground will be hosting, together, a Men’s Walk and a Women’s Walk, respectively. Lodging and most of the activities throughout the day will be at the campground hotel. Meals will be served in the Family Life Center, with use of our kitchen; chapel services will take place in our sanctuary; and the prayer chapel will be used throughout the weekend. We do not have any church activities scheduled for either weekend except for a clean-up day the Trustees have scheduled for the second Saturday. If you have questions about access to the church during these weekends, please contact us. We ask that preparations that need to be made by our volunteers for our regular Sunday morning schedule be made, as much as possible, early in the week. We want to avoid being in their way as much as possible. For some, a weekend like this can be a life changing experience. For others, it is often a rich and encouraging time. With that in mind, we do not want to unnecessarily complicate or compromise the weekend if we can avoid it. Thanks for your cooperation! If you have questions, please call! THREE: Wednesday, the first of March, marks the beginning of Lent this year. Our annual Ash Wednesday service will be at 7:00 PM in the sanctuary. We encourage you to come worship with us as we prepare ourselves to observe a holy lent. There will be no regular Wednesday evening activities on Ash Wednesday. Wednesday night suppers will resume during lent and will be followed by a small-group experience designed as an experiment with the idea of accountable-discipleship. There will be bulletin inserts with sign-up sheets in the bulletins the next two Sundays. We would love for you to join us. FOUR: Please continue to pray for our youth! By the time you read this, we expect to have already made it home from the ski trip (and returned the kids to their parents “in the condition we found them”). Thank you for praying for our safety on the slopes and on the road. Continue praying for their relationships with one another, with their parents and youth leaders, and with Christ.
Grace & peace …
