Today, we are reminded that Jesus identified himself with our poorest brothers and sisters. The Catholic Relief Services Collection serves Jesus in the victims of human trafficking, in those who suffer from unjust laws, and in those who need pastoral care and humanitarian assistance across the globe. Through your support with today’s Collection, you help Jesus in disguise. Please be generous.

NEXT SUNDAY’S SECOND COLLECTION IS FOR OUR PARISH BUILDING AND MAINTENANCE FUND.

Your generosity is very much appreciated.

FAZtor ‘s Notes by Fr. Arnold Zamora “Lord, it is good that we are here!” We hear these words from Peter in this Sunday’s gospel. When you go to church, can you say these same words?

Or maybe saying, “Lord, I am happy to be here.” Then you hear a long and boring sermon from the priest, the choir sings a hymn in different keys, a baby screams, the sound system screeches and everything seems to go wrong. Will you still have the patience, can you still manage to say “Lord, it is good that we are here?” I know some people move from one church to another. When they see something they don’t like they go to another, only to find out later that there is something wrong there also. The thing is that it is hard to find a perfect church. I read this somewhere: Our church will be perfect when we hear:

“Hey! It’s my turn to sit in the front pew.” “I was enthralled; I never noticed the homily went twenty-five

minutes overtime.” “Personally, I find going to church more enjoyable than play-

ing golf.” “I dearly want to be a teacher in the junior high Sunday school

class.” “Forget the denominational minimum salary; let’s pay our pas-

tor so he can live like we do.” “I love it when we sing hymns I’ve never heard before.” “Since we’re all here, let’s start the mass early.” “Nothing inspires me and strengthens my commitment like our

annual stewardship campaign.” “Pastor, we’d like to send you to this continuing education

seminar in the Bahamas.” “I’ve decided to give our church the five hundred dollars a

month I used to send to TV evangelists.”

Did you see the video of the pope cracking a joke? He said: “We know that there is no such thing as the perfect family, or a perfect husband or wife.” And he continued by saying: “I won’t even mention a perfect mother-in-law.” Nothing is perfect in this imperfect world. That’s why if we could not say, “Lord, it is good that we are here,” our prayer can just be “Lord, it is good that YOU are here.”

The Second Vatican Council: A 50th Anniversary Retrospective By the twenty-first Ecumenical Council of the Catholic Church, October 11, 1962-December 8, 1965; Edited by Jerry Back

Question: What considerations do bishops take when removing artistic works from a church?

Answer from Sacrosanctum Concilium: Let bishops carefully re-move from the house of God and from other sacred places those works of artists which are repugnant to faith, morals, and Christian piety, and which offend true religious sense either by depraved forms or by lack of artistic worth, mediocrity and pretense. Question: What are the considerations when placing sacred images in a church?

Answer from Sacrosanctum Concilium: The practice of placing sa-cred images in churches so that they may be venerated by the faithful is to be maintained. Nevertheless their number should be moderate and their relative positions should reflect right order. For otherwise they may create confusion among the Christian people and foster devotion of doubtful orthodoxy. Question: What is the process for passing judgment on works of art?

Answer from Sacrosanctum Concilium: When passing judgment on works of art, local ordinaries shall give a hearing to the diocesan com-mission on sacred art and, if needed, also to others who are especially expert, and to the commissions referred to in Articles 44, 45, and 46. Ordinaries* must be very careful to see that sacred furnishings and works of value are not disposed of or dispersed; for they are the orna-ments of the house of God. * Definition from the Catholic Encyclopedia: An Ordinary in ecclesiasti-cal language denotes any person possessing or exercising ordinary jurisdiction, (i.e., jurisdiction connected permanently or at least in a stable way with an office). Editor’s Note: Sacrosanctum Concilium (the Constitution on the Sa-cred Liturgy) has as its central aim a focus on greater participation of the laity in the liturgy. We are now reviewing the constitution’s final chapter, “Sacred Art.”

HOLY NAME SCHOOL NEWSLETTER MARCH 11, 2014

Dear Holy Name Families, Thank you to Mrs. Melissa Eusebio for a wonderful Talent Show last Friday. It took a lot of planning and many hours of practice so that our students would have the opportunity to share their talent with the whole community. Students in Kindergarten through 8th grade enter-tained and impressed everyone. Thank you to Mrs. Noreen McCul-lagh for orchestrating Grandparents/Special Friends Day. It was so nice to see so many relatives and friends here to enjoy the Talent Show followed by a delicious assortment of sweets, cheese and crackers and fruit and to visit with each other in the Flanagan Center. Thank you to many teachers and staff members for going above the call of duty to help out Mrs. Eusebio and Mrs. McCullagh in many different ways. Thanks to the 5th and 8th grade students for all of your hard work. If you have the opportunity, please walk around the school and look at our beautiful Lenten art work and bulletin boards. The significance of the Lenten season is discussed, age appropriately, in religion classes. Mrs. Babs Kleinhenz (Mrs. K) often uses themes of the various liturgical seasons in her art classes. God bless each of you. Sincerely, Mrs. Judy Cosmos
