NEWS OF COMFORT In a time of preparation, much of it having to do with material things, it is good to hear the words of Isaiah, “Comfort, give comfort to my people, / says your God” (Isaiah 40:1). In a time of such stress and rush, when our usu-al burdens are augmented by piles of Christmas preparations, we can choose to slow down, take some time to heal, and appreciate the enormous gift we are about to receive. Christ, the Son of God, has become one of us, and knows our human limitations. Yet God, even now, is freeing us from the burdens that our inattentiveness to our God and to our deepest inner longings have heaped upon us. The Lord comes, not as a king with mighty armies, but as a shepherd leading the flocks with care and tenderness. Isaiah prophesies good news: our oppression is over, our sins forgiven. The savior we have awaited is coming, not the first time, but in the end times, as our salvation.

“As it is written in Isaiah the prophet: ‘Behold, I am sending my messenger ahead of you; he will prepare your way. A voice of one crying out in the desert: “Prepare the way of the Lord, make straight his paths.” ’ John [the] Baptist appeared in the desert proclaiming a baptism of repentance for the forgiveness of sins.” -Mark 1:1-8

PRAY: Prince of Peace, help us to be messengers of reconciliation to prepare the way for Jesus as John the Baptist did. Show us small ways to build peace in our family, community, and world. Amen

SIMBANG GABI – A Filipino Christmas Tradition Simbang Gabi ( “Simba” means Mass, “Gabi” means night or even-ing) is a long treasured Philippine tradition which originally is a series of “dawn masses” for 9 consecutive days, in honor of the Blessed Virgin Mary in anticipation of Christmas. Its liturgical significance comes from the Season of Advent, being the time of spiritual preparation to worthily welcome and receive the Child Jesus in our midst. It starts December 16th through December 24th and is usually done as early as 3 to 5 o’clock in the morning. At St. Anthony Claret Church, novena masses are celebrated in the eve-nings as anticipated masses in lieu of dawn masses, for practical purposes. Thus, we usually start the novena on the evening of December 15th . The Simbang Gabi originated in the early days of Christianity in the Philippines, in and about 1660. The Philippines is an agricultur-al country where farmers, during the Spanish rule, toiled all day with one break during noon when the heat would be at its peak. When the Christmas season would begin, it was customary to hold novenas in the evenings. The Missionary Friars saw that the peo-ple despite fatigue wanted to attend the services. As a compro-mise, the clergy began to hold Mass in the early dawn when the land would still be dark before the natives went out to toil in the fields again. It was then a practical compromise for farmers who started their day before sunrise, at the crack of dawn, to avoid the heat in the fields. Simbang Gabi Mass is also known as Misa de Gallo. The word “gallo” means “rooster” in Spanish. At the first sound of dawn, at the crowing of the rooster, the entire family would get up and walk to the nearest parish church. This religious practice has been handed from one generation to the next and it evolved into a distinctly Philippine tradition. Simbang Gabi ex-presses the faith of Filipinos in God who is present in human his-tory, even in the simple joys and anxieties of life’s humblest activi-ties.
