My dear family of St. Andrew the Apostle!

In the beginning, God had a beautiful plan. God’s original intent was that man and woman would be on intimate terms with God and would be helpmates for each other — their “face to face.” They would be fruitful and have abundant offspring, and would be in harmony with the earth. Not only that, humans are said to be created in God’s own image, “male and female He created them.” So not only is woman made in God’s image, the relationship between men and women is said to be God’s image, and to actually manifest the very nature of God! Jesus speaks of divorce as being allowed “because of the hardness of your hearts,” and then He adds, “but it was not so in the beginning.” Jesus clearly states, “What God has joined together, let no one put asunder” (Mt 19,2-13). This was God’s basic intent, an intent God never abandons and must guide healing today.

I continue here as I have sporadically over the past months to share with you insights developed over a lifetime of experience by those among us who have entered into the darkness to shed God’s light of truth and love. Among these, of course, is Fr. Robert Sears, SJ, whose beautiful reflections on our relationships as men and women, as males and females, as husbands and wives, have been predominantly featured in the past weeks’ pastor’s letters here in our bulletin.

So where did all the shame and blame game come from, the apparent subordination of woman to man and sin? It’s apparent that when God commands not to eat of the fruit of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, he means it by adding the warning “lest you die.” Faced with the choice of God’s word (the tree of life) or their own desires (the tree of the knowledge of good and evil), they chose their way in disobedience. Losing that intimate relation to God, our first parents (Adam and Eve) “woke up to their nakedness,” covered themselves and hid, and so “shame” was born. What followed we all understand: when God confronted them, they made excuses and sidestepped responsibility for what they did. Adam blamed Eve, Eve blamed the serpent. And so Adam and Eve were no longer gifts for one another opening each other to God’s love, but had become occasions of sin and shame for each other. Other consequences followed as they were led away from grateful receptivity into control and clinging, their fruitfulness would be now through pain, while the earth itself would resist their efforts to till it. God’s original intent seemed tragically distorted and corrupted by their disobedience to God’s word. Still, God promised redemption. In the end the seed of the woman would crush the head of the serpent!

Sin inexorably continued on: Cain killed Abel out of envy and fear his gift was unappreciated. Cain’s violence increased in his offspring. For example, his grandson Lamech boasts of his killing: “If Cain is avenged sevenfold, truly Lamech seventy-sevenfold” (Gn 4,24). The need for love grew into lust. God saw human thoughts were constantly on evil, so He brought on the flood, with Noah as a second Adam, but still, the human depravity continued even though God gave a rainbow promising not to destroy humankind again. The monthly cycle of women was seen as defilement, and actual subordination of women to men took place.

Through it all, God repeatedly intervened to restore what was originally intended. Abraham is called to a life of obedience to God’s word. And when he and Sarah finally are given a son, Isaac, in their old age, God calls Abraham to sacrifice Isaac, showing that even the natural bond to children needs to be sacrificed to God. The promise and testing continue with Isaac and his wife Rebecca, with their sons Esau and Jacob, and with Jacob and Rachel, who fall in love but must delay their marriage for 14 years. True love does not come without suffering.

Then Jacob’s twelve sons become divided because of their envy of Joseph — the enmity between siblings continues. Finally, Joseph, though clearly naïve, brings healing through his faithfulness to God despite his brothers’ hatred and being falsely imprisoned. Joseph says to his brothers, full of faith in God, “What you intended for evil, God intended for good — the salvation of many” (Gn 50,20). Joseph shows us God’s way of healing. He focuses not on the hurt or human failing, but on God. Adherence to God despite hurt and trials ultimately leads to the restoration of God’s original intent. That’s the point but it is a truth too quickly forgotten, and it is finally made possible only in Jesus and the gift of God’s Spirit in our hearts.

Let us open our hearts to the light, for God does not wish anyone to walk, or live, in darkness! Lord Jesus, come! Marana-tha!

In the loving Hearts of Jesus and Mary, Fr. Gregor

Simbang Gabi MASS DECEMBER 23, 2017 at 5:30pm

Simbang Gabi literally means “evening or night mass.” In practice, it refers to the Philippine Catholic tradition of celebrating a “novena”, a series of nine Advent evening masses from Dec. 15 through Dec. 23, leading to Christmas Day. (In the Philippines, the dates are from Dec. 16-24 since Simbang Gabi is held in the early morning.) The Simbang Gabi originated from the Missa Aurea (Golden mass or Angel’s mass) tradition, introduced to the Philippines by the Spanish friars at the start of the Catholic evangelization of the islands. In 1587, Friar Diego Soria petitioned Pope Sixtus V for permission to celebrate these Masses outdoors due to such massive crowds coming to worship. The request was granted through a rescript, and in the 17th century, the Simbang Gabi or Misa de Gallo or Misa de Aguinaldo - as the practice is variously referred to by the Catholic populace in the Philippines - became a permanent fixture in the Philippine Catholic religious traditions. Originally (and still observed in most places in the Philippines), the Simbang Gabi Masses were held at the

crack of dawn - at 4:00 or 5:00 am, when the roosters crowed to announce the dawn of a new day, hence the name, Misa de Gallo (gallo=rooster), and when families of farmers and fishermen began or ended their day. Farmers began working in their fields early to avoid the intense heat, while the fishermen who spent all night at sea came home early to sell their catch. So, at the first sound of dawn, the local bands started playing traditional carols all over town and church bells pealed to summon everyone for the Simbang Gabi. Families would walk to the church passing by homes with lighted parol or lanterns fashioned out of bamboo and colored paper. In the darkness of the night, we sing with joyful longing for the coming of the Savior, the Light of the world. In the deadly darkness of sin, we hope eagerly for the coming of the Savior, the Life of the world. In Simbang Gabi, we join Mary and Joseph, all other saints, prophets, and the Christian faithful throughout history in joyfully welcoming the Savior who is the Light and the Life of the world.

WE AWAIT THE KING Heaven was not empty | Reflection by Bishop Fulton Sheen

When we say that God became man, we do not mean to say that heaven was empty. That

would be to think of heaven as a kind of a space, like a room that was twenty by thirty feet. When God came to this world, he did not leave heaven empty. When he came to this world,

he was not shaved down, whittled down to human proportions. Rather, Christ was the life of God dwelling in human flesh.

St. Thomas Aquinas includes a very beautiful description of this in one of his

hymns. He said, "The heavenly Word proceeding forth, yet leaving not the

Father's side."

A Jewish scholar who became a Christian and who knew the Old Testament very

well and all of the traditions of the Jews, said that at the time of Christ the rabbis had gathered together 456 prophecies

concerning the Messiah, the Christ, the conqueror of evil who was to be born and

to enter into a new covenant with mankind. Suppose the chances of any one prophecy being fulfilled by accident, say the place where he would be born, was

one in a hundred.

Then, if two prophecies were fulfilled, the chances would be one in a thousand. If three prophecies were to coincide in Christ, that would be one in ten thousand. If four, one in a

hundred thousand. If five, one in a million. Now if all of these prophecies were fulfilled in Christ, what would be the chance of them all concurring at the appointed moment, not only

in place but also in time, as was foretold by the prophet Daniel? Take a pencil and write on a sheet of paper the numeral 1, and draw a line beneath it. Under the line write 84, and after 84, if you have time, write 126 zeros. That is the chance of all of the prophecies of Christ

being fulfilled. It runs into millions and millions, trillions and trillions.

GRANT ETERNAL REST, LIGHT AND PEACE TO ALL FAITHFUL DEPARTED

Please call the parish office by Monday at (815) 886-4165 x301 for the name of your loved one to be placed for 3 weeks on our short term prayer list. Also, please call the parish office, if you are hospitalized and would like a visit from our hospital ministry team or homebound and in need of communion.

Hospital Visitation of Parishioners Please remember that if you or any family members find yourselves in a hospital, be sure to let them know you are a parishioner at St. Andrew’s — it doesn’t hurt to say it a few times, either! Whenever we priests, deacons or Eucharistic Ministers come to visit, we check the hospital list of parishioners printed under “St. Andrew.” But if you’re not listed as a parishioner of St. Andrew, we won’t know you’re even there! We do not want to miss you! You can always call us, too, at the office, (815) 886-4165 ext. 301. Thank you. May the Lord Jesus be with you all your days, to love and be loved by Him, to honor and serve Him, as He honors and serves us!

A COMMUNITY OF WORD AND SACRAMENT SACRAMENTS OF INITIATION

CATECHUMENATE The Catechumenate is a community which gathers those adults who have not been baptized, and seek deeper insight into the Christian faith.

BAPTISM OF CHILDREN

We joyfully celebrate the baptism of children of Christian households which are joined to our weekly worship, and have active registration in our parish community for at least 3 months. After registration in the parish, please attend an Evening of Awareness, if you have not attended a class in the past two years, to register for Baptism and select a date. Classes are presented on the first Wednesday of each month at 7:30 p.m. in the Parish Hall. Baptism is celebrated on the third Sunday of the month at 1:30 p.m.

EUCHARIST AND CONFIRMATION

Formation for those coming first to the table of the Lord as children is infused into the efforts of our school and Faith Formation Office. Confirmation formation is a two year process completed in eighth grade. Please call the Faith Formation Office for more information.

SACRAMENTS OF COMMITMENT

MARRIAGE

Marriage preparation is a six month process of prayer, reflection and study. Couples work with both the presider and a sponsor couple through this process. Please note that this six month period of preparation is essential.

SACRAMENTS OF HEALING

ANOINTING

Anointing of the Sick is offered through seasonal services, and always by request. If hospitalized, please immediately seek anointing from the Catholic chaplain. I would like to have my house blessed.
