Multiple copies of this DVD (52 minutes long) are available at the Parish Office for checkout for a week’s time. Call the Office 815-886-4165 ext. 301 to reserve a copy for no more than one week. This is an amazing, excellent, marvelous and brief presentation of the history of the apparitions of Our Lady of Fatima and what has transpired over these past 100 years.

100th Anniversary of Our Lady of Fatima

1917 — 2017

My dear family of St. Andrew the Apostle!

So today, our fifth installment on the call all of us have to be Marital First Responders (by the way, see previous bulletins for earlier installments). To review: do you remember the first basic distinction? (Hint: “hard” problems vs. “soft” problems?)

Last week, we began looking at what will make YOU be the best Marital First Responder, some tips, sugges-tions, do’s and don’t’s, common mistakes, like too much advice, a lot of it not useful; talking too much about self; too critical of either spouse; suggesting a break up; etc. Today we continue with a few more common mistakes

“Distractor” — saying nothing or changing the subject (e.g., “How about this weather?”) “Polly Anna” — rushing to reassure (e.g., “You have such a good marriage” or “You’re such a kind person. I’m sure you are polite to his mother.”) “Interrogator” — asking too many questions (e.g., “What exactly did she say? Then what did you say? And then what happened?”) “Smarty Pants”— offering perspective too soon, before emotionally connecting enough (e.g., “I see what’s going on.”) “Wimp” — staying with empathy when the person needs challenge.

So now, let’s look at how best to be helpful to those of our family and friends who are feeling a crisis in their marriage: in other words, how best to listen, to give emotional support, to give a helpful perspective, to understand what were/are their own contributors to their marital problem, to understand where their partner is coming from, etc.

Here are some CORE SKILLS developed by much listening and responding to those in need of marital help. This approach is called L.E.A.P., that is, LISTEN first, then EMPATHIZE with them (“I’m sorry you’re going through this,”) then AFFIRM the strengths and capacities of the troubled person confiding in you, and then offer PERSPECTIVE (like, for example “I don’t know if this fits your situation, but my wife and I have dealt with something that sounds similar when we were a new couple. Here’s something I learned…”) This approach will give you the most helpful ways to respond to people in troubled marriages – not to over-react to the “soft” problems and not under-react to the “hard” problems – to empathize without necessarily agreeing with the other person’s perspective.

REMEMBER, research suggests that couples with problems wait an average of six years before getting professional help. In the meantime, they talk to their friends, to family members, to coworkers, and to people they trust at church, like YOU. How these people (YOU!) respond can have a profound effect on the future of the marriage.

In our next installment, we’ll break down each of these four different points: how best to LEAP: to LISTEN, EMPATHIZE, AFFIRM, and offer PERSPECTIVE. The most important thing is by listening, empathizing, and affirming, you LET THE PERSON KNOW YOU CARE!

Let us continue to grow into being the best Marital First Responders, opening our hearts to learn more and more about how to be the best marital responders we can be and God calls us to be! Our Lady of Fatima, pray for us!!!

In the loving Hearts of Jesus and Mary, Fr. Gregor

Mass for Healing with Father Jim Cur n, Pastor of St. Dennis Church & The Roamin’ Catholics Healing Ministry Team

Saturday, September 9 at 5:30 pm

St. Andrew the Apostle Catholic Church

Why does healing occur? Healing occurs because we have a loving Father in heaven who wants His children, us, to be whole and

healed. He wants His kingdom to be here on earth; a kingdom of peace, healing and holiness. Healing occurs if we are obedient to the

scriptures which tell us to lay hands on the sick, and that when prayer is said in faith the person will be healed. Our faith is the key!

Believe that before we receive healing prayer that God wants us healed, and God will ALWAYS heal us in some way.

“They shall lay hands on the sick, and they shall recover. “

Father Jim Curtin Fr. Jim Curtin has been the Pastor at St. Dennis Catholic Church in Lockport, IL for the past 20 years. Prior to coming to St. Dennis, he was the founding Pastor at St. Thomas the Apostle Church in Naperville, IL. He was the Executive Director of the Joliet Marriage Encounter Program from 1974 - 1984. Fr. Jim has been involved in the Catholic Charismatic Renewal since 1974. He has conducted numerous retreats, seminars, and healing conferences throughout the years. In addition to healing seminars and retreats that are conducted by Fr. Jim Curtin, the St. Dennis Healing Ministry team, The Roamin Catholics, has over 40 people who have been trained to administer healing. Each Sunday during the year after the 9:30 a.m. and 11:15 a.m. Mass, healing team members are present to lay on hands and administer healing prayer. All are welcome. Private healing prayers sessions are also offered.

“I missed that announcement. Where can I find out more information?” If this has happened to you, don’t worry. Besides your BULLETIN, you can find information about St. Andrew events on all our bulletin boards throughout the church and school. Take some time to check them out. At the church entrance is the main board with Church News and Events. CD’s and the Gift Shop are available in the elementary Hallway near the Harvest Saturday board. By the ramp you will find info from the Polish Community, Vocations, and Knights of Columbus. Across from that is St. Vincent de Paul, Faith Formation and CCW News. Through the doors is the board with Job listings and Neighbor Needs, Lost and Found, St. Andrew’s Sports Trophies a framed poster of all our Popes, a spiritual information rack, and the Justice and Pro-Life board. At each of the two entrances to the Parish Hall is another board with Church News and Events. Check out the school bulletin boards throughout the hallways for school events and the students’ wonderful work. You’ll never have to miss a St. Andrew event again!

MYTHS AND TRUTHS

The following are myths about divorce, annulment, and remarriage in the Catholic Church. (Please note the word annulment is commonly used jargon, but the proper church term is declaration of nullity.)

MYTH #16

Anyone that appeals and waits long enough will get an annulment.

TRUTH

Tribunals do not give negative decisions. The burden of proving a case rests on the petitioner. The Catholic Church presumes that every marriage is a valid union. There must be sufficient grounds for declaring otherwise.

WATERLEAF “BABY BOTTLES

FOR LIFE”

SEPTEMBER 9TH AND 10TH In September St. Andrew the Apostle will be participating in a special fundraiser to promote and further a Culture of Life within our parish and local community. Waterleaf provides practical help; pregnancy testing, ultrasounds, STD testing and treatment as well as continuing education and support for women in our community who would otherwise be at risk for choosing abortion. Last year with the support of churches like St. Andrew the Apostle, Waterleaf served 789 clients, performed 521 pregnancy tests, 343 ultrasounds and rescued 60 babies. Baby bottles will be distributed to parishioners after the Masses on September 9th and September 10th to take home and fill with spare change, cash, a check or a prayer. Bottles can be returned the weekends of September 16th and 17th, 23rd and 24th, and 30th and October 1st. There will be a basket in the vestibule of Church where you can leave them. This fundraiser is a great way for each member of the family to help in building a Culture of Life. Thank you in advance for your response to the call of the Gospel to serve those in great need! May Jesus, through the Immaculate Heart of His Mother, Mary, bless and protect you and your loved ones!

We ask this in the name of Jesus the Lord. Amen.

GRANT ETERNAL REST, LIGHT AND PEACE TO ALL FAITHFUL DEPARTED Joanne Ropke, Peter (Pete) Carrara Please call the parish office by Monday at (815) 886-4165 x301 for the name of your loved one to be placed for 3 weeks on our short term prayer list. Also, please call the parish office, if you are hospitalized and would like a visit from our hospital ministry team or homebound and in need of communion.

Hospital Visitation of Parishioners Please remember that if you or any family members find yourselves in a hospital, be sure to let them know you are a parishioner at St. Andrew’s — it doesn’t hurt to say it a few times, either! Whenever we priests, deacons or Eucharistic Ministers come to visit, we check the hospital list of parishioners printed under “St. Andrew.” But if you’re not listed as a parishioner of St. Andrew, we won’t know you’re even there! We do not want to miss you! You can always call us, too, at the office, (815) 886-4165 ext. 301. Thank you. May the Lord Jesus be with you all your days, to love and be loved by Him, to honor and serve Him, as He honors and serves us!

A COMMUNITY OF WORD AND SACRAMENT SACRAMENTS OF INITIATION

CATECHUMENATE The Catechumenate is a community which gathers those adults who have not been baptized, and seek deeper insight into the Christian faith.

BAPTISM OF CHILDREN

We joyfully celebrate the baptism of children of Christian households which are joined to our weekly worship, and have active registration in our parish community for at least 3 months. After registration in the parish, please attend an Evening of Awareness, if you have not attended a class in the past two years, to register for Baptism and select a date. Classes are presented on the first Wednesday of each month at 7:30 p.m. in the Parish Hall. Baptism is celebrated on the third Sunday of the month at 1:30 p.m.

EUCHARIST AND CONFIRMATION

Formation for those coming first to the table of the Lord as children is infused into the efforts of our school and Faith Formation Office. Confirmation formation is a two year process completed in eighth grade. Please call the Faith Formation Office for more information.
