THREE MISSIONS Today we begin with one of the “servant songs” from the book of Isaiah, a song prophetic of Jesus’ ministry of service. Isaiah’s mission is not only to bring back the children of Jacob to gather in Israel; it is also to be “a light to the nations” (Isaiah 49:6). Jesus Christ, as servant, will be the fulfillment of the ancient prophecy and the basis of the new. This Sunday we begin a series of readings from Paul’s letter to the Corinthians. Here Paul is identified by his mission: he is an apostle of Jesus Christ. The church at Corinth to whom he addresses this letter is also identified: it is part of the universal church of God. The Corinthians are called to holiness, as are all Christians.

Though the feast of the Baptism of the Lord was celebrated last Monday, today’s Gospel also alludes to the importance of that event. The reading emphasizes that Jesus “outranks” John: his baptism in the Spirit will eradicate sin. Jesus accepts John’s baptism, even though it is he himself who is the Lamb of God.

There will be a special collection on January 15th

for retired priests and sisters. Traditionally, women and men religious worked for small stipends that furnished

only the basics of daily living. As a result a majority of religious communities now lack

adequate funding for retirement. At the same time, the costs of care continues to grow while the number of religious able to serve in compensated ministry decreases.

Please give generously to this great cause.

Special envelopes will be available in the back of Church and the Parish Office.

When Mary visited Elizabeth, the unborn John the Baptist

recognized the unborn Savior in her womb and leaped for joy.

To honor our commitment to the unborn, we will be offering a special blessing at each of the Masses the weekend of

January 21st & 22nd to all Mothers and Fathers awaiting the arrival of their precious gift from God.

COME PRAY WITH US FOR THE UNBORN!

Also on January 22nd, there will be a prayer vigil in St. Anne’s Chapel from 1 pm to 3:30 pm

Baptism Baptisms are held on the 4th Sunday of each month after the 11:00am Mass. Baptism is a communal Sacrament and not private. Deacon John Fanelle performs all of the baptisms. Parents are required to be formally registered as parishioners, and be participating members of our community for three months. Attending Mass does not make you registered– you must have filled out a registration form! If this is the first child, both parents are required to attend the Baptismal Class. Baptismal classes are held on the first Sunday of each month. Godparents are encouraged to attend the baptismal class, either at our parish or their own parish. To schedule a Baptism and/or register for the Baptismal Class, please contact the parish office, (858) 481-3232. Call us to register for the class. Next class - Sunday, February 5 at 7 pm Marriage All couples wishing to be married at St. Thérèse of Carmel must be formally registered, active and participating members of our parish community for one year before setting a date. Couples are asked to allow six to nine months to complete the marriage preparation program. Please call the parish office (858)-481-3232 to make arrangements.
