Club News UWI Mona Circle K

FROM THE

EDITOR‟S DESK Welcome Circle K‟ers, to another edition of the “PELACAN NEWS”, the official news letter of the UWI Mona Circle K Club. I am B.E Jermaine, I hope that you‟re all having a speedy transition back into your respective routines, and that you are all prepared for a wonderful year of service and hard work. It is my hope that we can have the best and most productive year possible as we move forward in our endeavors, that we can come together in a state of unity and solidarity, and that you will all work with myself and the UWI Mona Circle K Club, as we seek to rise to higher heights in the name of “service over self”, as we continue to „Live to serve and Love to serve.

On September 21st, members of the

University of the West Indies Circle K Club along with

environmentally conscious individuals and

numerous other service clubs, partnered with the

Jamaica Environment Trust in the Annual

International Costal cleanup Day.

On the day, persons from all walks of life

came together on the Fort Rocky Beach in Kingston

to fight for the preservation of our environment.

Armed with their plastic bags, gloves, log books

and water bottles in toe; the battle for our

environment was well under way. Form 8:00 am –

11:00am persons worked tirelessly along there shore

line, collecting pounds upon ponds of garbage

and other debris scattered along the beach.

During the summer break there where a few

changes made to the structure of the executive

body of the UWI Mina Circle K Club. Our former 2nd

Vice President Anique Mckie was appointed to the

District board, in the post of District Secretary, leaving

a vacancy in the executive body. With the 2nd V.P

moving on to the big leagues, it was decided to look

within the club and choose one outstanding circle K-

er who exhibited the necessary qualities needed to

fill the seat. After much deliberation, it was decided

that we would appoint Circle K-er Debra Williamson

to the post of 2nd Vice President. So we ask you all to

welcome her with open arms

On September 26th , the culmination of the

UWI Mona Circle K‟s‟ Anniversary Week, took

shape in our grand Anniversary Meeting. With the

support of new and returning members of, along

with our neighboring Circle K Clubs and our

sponsoring club, The Kiwanis Club of North St.

Andrew, the celebration was under way.

Over the course of the meeting there were

various presentations, one such being that of our

guest speaker, Mrs. C. Robotham , from the

University of the West Indies branch of the

Jamaica National Building Society (JNBS), who

presented on the importance of saving for

tomorrow and building our very own plans for the

future. Along with this most riveting presentation,

we had brief presentations on the history of the

UWI Mona Circle K from speakers such as our own

Treasurer Ashley Wilson, District Governor Nicollet

Wilson and Paradise Division L.G Cherie Raynor.

26 Years and Going Strong

. During the week of September 22nd to 30th, The

UWI Mona Circle K cellebrated its 26th Aniversay. Since its

first meeting in 1987, The UWIMona Circle K Club has

continued to be one of the driving forces in service

within our community and the Island at large.Over the

course of the week, that stringent and consistent

comitment to service was celebrated by not only the

club as a whole, but by our neigbouring clubs and the

reste of the K-Fam at large.

During the week we had various activites .

These included our week long recutment drive, fund

raisers in the form of backe sails, various Interclubings

with other Circle K Clubs and Kiwanies Clubs. There were

also projects such as our Book Sponshership, „Read with

a kid day‟, with everything colminating in our Anniversary

meeting where both old and new members had the

opportunity to learn our rich history and get a glimpse of

what it means to be a part of the mighty UWI Mona

Circle K.

Anniversary Meeting

During the proceedings, various club

members were also highlighted for the

outstanding contribution that they had made

to the club over the past year. With much of

the formalities out of the way, it was time for

our fun and games section where club

members proceeded to unwind and enjoy

the rest of the evening.
