We analyzed and evaluated both maternal and fetal characteristics, such as age, height, weight, gestational age, type of delivery, fetal presentation and maternal associated obstetrical complications. Results Along this study, we divided the cases in two groups. Group A consisted of 9 cases of frank and occult umbilical cord prolapse, while Group B referred to 27 cases of umbilical cord hematoma. There were only 7 vaginal deliveries reported, 4 of them being related to Group B. Our study indicated the fact that umbilical cord prolapse and umbilical cord hematoma are severe

complications which may lead to a low level of quality in neonatal outcomes. Vaginal delivery, extreme

ages (<18, >35 years), multiparity and malpresentations are risk factors for these two conditions.

Conclusion

Materials and methods

We performed a retrospective study, identifying 36 pregnant patients diagnosed with umbilical cord

prolapse and umbilical cord hematoma in the Obstetrics and Gynecology Department of the Emergency

University Hospital of Bucharest, between February 2013 and February 2014. We analyzed and evaluated

both maternal and fetal characteristics, such as age, height, weight, gestational age, type of delivery, fetal

presentation and maternal associated obstetrical complications.

Results

Along this study, we divided the cases in two groups. Group A consisted of 9 cases of frank and occult

umbilical cord prolapse, while Group B referred to 27 cases of umbilical cord hematoma. There were

only 7 vaginal deliveries reported, 4 of them being related to Group B. The quality of neonatal outcomes

had a decreased success rate in Group B, due to the fact that 15 cases of neonatal asphyxia were reported,

all after performed cesarean sections, in relation to Group A which only had 5 cases.

Objective

This study was developed in order to establish the neonatal outcomes in patients with umbilical cord

prolapse and umbilical cord hematoma. A secondary objective was to observe the risk factors, caused by

these two complications, which determine neonatal asphyxia.
