Section C: Source-Based Questions (25 marks)Answer all the questions.

9. This question is about life under the Japanese Occupation

a) Study Source A.What does it tell you about life of the locals under the Japanese Occupation? [5]

b) Study Sources B and C.How different are the two sources in showing the Japanese Occupation of Singapore? [5]

Source A- A war survivor’s description of the situation in Singapore during the Japanese Occupation

The Japanese soldiers were everywhere; at every street corner, there were a couple of Japanese standing guard. They just kept a watch on people. If they found somebody, any suspicious-looking people, they would sometimes stop them and ask for their identity. After going around and seeing things for ourselves, we thought it better, safer to stay at home rather than risk getting arrested on the streets.

Source B – From a Japanese Booklet during World War II

“Under Japanese rule, we will achieve a Greater East Asia Co-Prosperity Sphere where

all will prosper.”

Source C – A political cartoon on the Sook Ching

10. This question is about the riots in Singapore during the 1950s

a) Study Source D. What does the source tell you about Maria Hertogh? [5]

b) Study Sources E and F.How similar are the two sources? [5]

Source D – Published by a Dutch newspaper, D Waarheid in December 1950

Was it right that this 13 year old girl’s marriage is valid? We don’t think so in the West – but in the East – it is! But it has become clear the parties involved have very little say in this issue. The decision is not in their hands anymore but driven by others to gain their political fame out of the girl’s predicament. This delicate issue should have been solved without the hordes of reporters who provoked and brought the issue to near disaster. There were reports on Maria threw herself sobbing into her mother’s arms. But, at the same time, there were reports that Maria called out to the journalists for help and cried: ‘Please help me! I find it awful to have to stay here.’

Source E – Adapted from a report by the British to investigate the cause of the Maria Hertogh riots.

The Commission placed large blame on the police command for not having anticipated the riots despite the violence between 2 and 11 December. Furthermore, when the riots first started, the government failed to act promptly to disperse the crowd. The Gurkha contingent standing by was not put into action, while too much dependence was placed on Malay policemen, many of whom sided with the rioters or at least hesitated to carry out their duties.

*Gurkha – soldiers from Nepal

Source F – A recount of the events on 11th December 1950

The mob (largely consisted of Malay or Indonesian Muslims but local Chinese gangs were also reported to have joined in) moved out to attack any Europeans and even Eurasians in sight. They overturned cars and burnt them. The police force, its lower ranks largely consisted of Malays who sympathized with the rioters' cause, were ineffective in stopping the riots. Help from the British Military was immediately enlisted by the government. Major-General Dunlop deployed two Internal Security Battalions while calling in further reinforcement from Malaysia.

11. This question is about why Singapore separated from Malaysia in 1965.

a) Study Source G.

What does Source G tell you about the Alliance Party supporters’ opinion of Mr Lee Kuan Yew? Explain your answer. [5]
