snippetsWarp speed confirmed!? – ai ai captain! February 2014? Say what?.. All we need now is the “beam me up Scotty” part to help us save more time, as life blurs forward and we are all busy and when we look again the Christmas trees need to go up again (or maybe as in my case ... it has not even come down yet!)

February is going to be a great month – Sharlz has her birthday first on the 10th... (I’m sure we will celebrate at wimpy) ... then my first baby turns sweet 16 on the 13th February! My 2.9kg baby is now a giant of almost 1.9m of pure strength, determination and full of heart. Ceagan Scott you rock and show us everyday how truly blessed we are to have a son like you, you make us very proud. Also, we then celebrate valentines on the 14th – it is a Friday so no excuses men ... make that special lady feel special!!!

In July this year Justin and I will be in our 20th year of marriage.. we have (almost) perfected how to love unconditionally, with immense hard work and lots of “chats”! I still LOVE my best friend and LOVE the concept of happily ever after .. so valentines is always special knowing I still have the love of my life with me!! Love you forever Mr Scott ... thanks for being MY valentine (for what seems like my whole life already) I could NOT be happier!! and then to top it all off - Lucille is getting married on the 22nd ... it is really going to be a GREAT month!

In this edition, we get to meet the lovely Schroder couple. May you get to meet ALL your neighbours this year! We love your story and thanks for teaching me something new - I did not know the ‘cane party’ was held here at all - very interesting! Joe covers a lot of needed topics of discussion, thank you Joe and it seems the new Lady Mel will become our new best friend... Dave gives 2 good info pieces to remember as far as access is concerned. Natanie is also a hub of useful information –including the TREAT YOUR SPOUSE bit .. I agree .. just do it!! It shows you love them too...

We hope you enjoy reading your favourite mag with a nice cup of tea, with your feet up ... well that is at least how I picture everyone reading our mags!!!

notice for the extermination will be given – here is your chance yo get rid of them before we do!

The Christmas Season went off fairly well and peacefully, thanks for the lack of fireworks, we only had one real incident involving noise and fireworks, I always though the Almighty had excellent hearing skills some appear too think not and have to amplify things. This culminated in the illegal use of a fire extinguisher and an impromptu visit by “Frosty the Snowman Estate Manager” as a result the illegal discharge of the dry chemical powder fire extinguisher, but the “Good Lord” and the long arm of the law will resolve that one.

As the Estate is maturing we have of necessity required to grow our management staff to cater for this, the old days of Joe being the one who manages the day to day issues, admin, security maintenance and everything else were have had to employ staff to specialize in dealing with the various disciplines and accomplish this. Whilst Joe is still in overall control he cannot do everything and functions have to be delegated, we have thus had to change the old structures. Joe should NOT be the first call; he should rather be the last call if satisfaction has not been achieved. It should also be remembered that the larger the Estate becomes the more important strategic planning becomes especially keeping the finances balanced.

In the last Estate press we placed an article on how we intended to deal with implementation of rules using Dispute Resolution rather than a baseball bat and brick. In the past

Isn’t NATURE a WONDERFUL, JOYFUL and fickle thing, it allows us humans such diversity, love, beauty, awe, things to be inspired by, things to despise it knocks hell out of the “ama matata ma LOOTO Lotto!”

In this month’s article we have to dwell on a negative aspects nature.Let’s start off on a vegetative note. We are declaring this year the year of the “schinua terebinthifolius” most of you will be scratching your head and asking what the hell this is – it is that lovely shade tree common called the “brazilian pepper”. Let’s have a look at this beauty – it has pretty creamy white flowers from September to March which develop into bright red, slightly fleshy spherical drupes. Pretty ornamental garden plants! They only have one or two draw backs. The seeds are poisonous, (and road side hawkers in Umhlanga make a fortune selling them as a pepper substitute) the sap is a skin irritant and affects the respiratory tract.

A couple of residents who insisted in removing fever trees cited their reason for doing so for health reason and replaced the fever trees with these – from the firing pan into the fire! This may be a perfect plant to give mother in laws who don’t agree with the sibling’s martial choice – but they are otherwise bad news.

The plant is a particular problem in Kzn and existing legislation classifies then as “Category 1 invasive, this would place them in countries with sane laws as a capital offence for the noose!’

We give notice our tree executioners will be out with a vengeance and NO

Please note that due to the hot weather we have being experiencing lately it has become common practice for some residence to leave doors open whilst this cools you down somewhat it also gives ANYbODY walking past a quick in and out of your house?

furniture in and out the estateI would once again like to thank those residents that always comply, to bring furniture in or remove furniture from the Estate.

Residents are required to notify the office (hours are 08:00 to 04:00 Mon to Fri) by completing a furniture advice form.

This ensures a smooth passage through the gate, as most removals are done over weekends and the office is closed so some planning is essential. This also allows for us to be in the position to assist should you require the vehicle (large) to come through the ballito gate.

These forms are available at the Office and on our web site.

contractors (repair / Aircon / Stove and fridge Technicians as well as deliveries)The other misunderstood criteria is the access for “Contractors” be they stove repair, fridge, aircon or TV technicians they are all required to be processed at the M4 gate. So when you arrange with your supplier or dealer for an appointment please notify the office so we know they are in fact expected by you.

The procedure for this is that the contractor is processed at the M4 gate and will then dial your access code on the intercom to liaise directly with you for access and egress to the Estate.

We appreciate every resident’s co-operation in this regard.

Please remember that the same road rules that apply outside our Estate also apply within our booms. So please comply?

*reMinDer

Compliments of the Season may 2014 be prosperous for All.I would just like to clarify 2 relevant issues which if applied can assist and streamline the process at the gate.

From the administration managers desk

Ahhh Valentine’s Day!Now many of you would say “I don’t need a specific day to treat my husband or wife; I can treat him/her any time of the year” and I agree to that whole heartedly…. but remember to do just that. Go out and buy that special person in your life a bunch of flowers every now and then, or do something romantic, like a romantic walk on the beach or a picnic... go on, you can do it! It will mean the world to them, knowing that you appreciate them for who they are! (…And tell them that often)

Remember that our AGM will be held next month on the 26th March so please make sure that you can all be there?

We have a contracted ecologist who operates from the Estate Management Offices, Simon bundy, and acts as our resident

Environmental Control Officer. He is backed up by a team of equally qualified professionals who are all available to ensure that the Estates Environmental status is maintained at its highest level. (Alex, Roxanne & Calum)

Our Aesthetics Committee acts as a Design Review Panel to adjudicate proposed construction projects. The Committee meets on a regular basis and assists in oversight of our Environmental and Aesthetic needs.

The basic premise of our overall architectural theme is “Tuscan” however we allow a certain amount of latitude in order to allow owners to develop their properties to their requirements.

We encourage our residents to utilize indigenous plants in their gardens with some allowance for horticultural favourites. Unlike many

estates, Seaward does not prescribe as to which plant species must be utilised, but rather lists those plants that should not be incorporated into landscaping into the estate. All verge landscaping should be indigenous and appropriate to form.

Please take a look at our website before you plan your gardens, so that you are aware of which plant species are forbidden and which are encouraged. You will find this information here: http://www.seawardestates.co.za and ‘click’ on “Environmental”.

For queries on any environmental issues please contact Sustainable Development Projects (SDP) on:032 946 0685 (Ext 2) or [email protected]; [email protected] Website: http://www.ecocoast.co.za

It is really funny how things sometimes work out. Seaward Estate and I go way back, all the way to New Year’s Eve 1999 when most of Seaward was still covered with sugar cane fields and grassland. Seaward was home to the popular “Cane Party” that year, and walking down Seaward Drive that night I would never have dreamt that I would be travelling up and down that hill every day of my life, a mere 12 years later. How things have changed in the last 12 years or so!

Despite both of us growing up within 30km of each other (in the greater Wartburg district in the

Midlands), Cornelia and I only met whilst studying at the University of KwaZulu-Natal, Pietermaritzburg. Cornelia is the group financial manager at the head office of Illovo Sugar Limited in Mount Edgecombe, and I am an attorney at Araujo Attorneys on Umhlanga Ridge where we solely specialise in conveyancing transactions.

We got married in November 2010 and have absolutely loved every minute of married life. We lived in Umgeni Park (Durban North) for the first year of our marriage and then undertook the massive adventure of purchasing our first

home together here in Seaward. We were drawn to Seaward like a moth to a lamp. Who wouldn’t want to live in the calm, clean, tranquil, secure, peaceful and well maintained Estate we now call home? We absolutely love Estate life and will probably never be able to go back to anything less.

The North Coast is booming with development and with both our jobs a mere 30km away choosing to live here was an absolute no brainer. One of my hobbies, which I am passionate about, is photography and the estate certainly doesn’t disappoint with opportunities in this

regard with an amazing variety of flora and fauna. We have no pets of our own but love the abundance of birdlife on the Estate.

Our lives are quite career focussed at the moment and so we haven’t been able to really integrate into the friendly community of the greater ballito area and unfortunately even more so in Seaward. but hopefully things will change in 2014!

Despite our forefathers coming over from Germany in roundabout 1880 (133 odd years ago), Cornelia and I are very lucky that both our

parents are German speaking and so 5 generations later we still speak German and are still trying to keep the German flag flying high.

One of the verses in the bible which we hold very dearly and try and live by, which is also our wedding verse, is found in Colossians 3 verse 17 where it says, “And whatever you do, whether in word or deed, do it all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him.”

The Lord has truly blessed us with an amazing home here in Seaward for which we are forever thankful!

inGreDienTSbASic Truffle inGreDienTS• 8 ounces of semi-sweet or bittersweet chocolate (high

quality, 62% cacao or higher), well chopped into small pieces

• 1/2 cup of heavy whipping cream• 1 teaspoon of vanilla extract

• Truffle coATinGS• Cocoa powder• Finely chopped walnuts• Finely chopped almonds

MeTHoD1. In a small, heavy saucepan bring the heavy whipping

cream to a simmer (this may take a while, be sure to stir and scrape down the sides with a rubber spatula every few minutes). If you are using one of the other recommended flavorings, stir it in with the cream (and ignore vanilla in the next step). If adding mint or other solids, after the cream simmers, remove from heat and let seep for an hour. Then strain away solids, and return the cream to a simmer and proceed with recipe.

2. Place the chocolate in a separate bowl. Pour the cream over the chocolate, add the vanilla, and allow to stand for a few minutes then stir until smooth. (This chocolate base is called ganache.)

3. Allow to cool, then place in the refrigerator for two hours. Remove and with a teaspoon roll out balls of the ganache. Roll in your hands quickly (as it will melt from the heat of your hands) and place on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper. Place in the refrigerator overnight.

4. Roll in cocoa powder or chopped nuts and serve, or place back in the refrigerator until needed.
