PARISH TOWN HALL MEETING AND BUDGET REVIEW WITH POT LUCK DINNER

Sunday, October 26, 5 - 7p.m. in the Great Hall

Do you feel like we don’t spend enough time explain-ing our Operating Budget during the Annual Meeting in February? Do you have questions on the budget or the budget development process? Do you want to know where we are with 2014 Actual Income and Expenses to date?

If you’re concerned or have questions about the finan-cial status of All Saints’ Church, this forum is your oppor-tunity to become better informed and voice your opinion.

We will start the Town Hall Meeting with a presenta-tion by members of the Budget and Finance Committee, and then while we eat our Pot Luck meal, each table can discuss specific concerns. During dessert and coffee, all will contribute comments from their small groups to come to a better understanding of the Operating Budget and our current financial health.

Look for more details in upcoming Sunday announce-ments. Questions? You can talk to any member of the Budget & Finance Committee: Mark Gibson, Sr. Warden; Dunbar Ashbury, Treasurer; John Aulls; Sara Gibson; Hunt Hendrickson; and Dan Lajewski.

ST. MARY’S COMPLETES FUNDING OF THE COURT STREET BUILDING

When the refurbishment of the exterior of the Court Street building was envisioned as part of the 2011 Capital Campaign, St. Mary’s Chapter pledged $50,000 to help with the project and celebrate the 200th anniversary of the build-ing. The project cost $74,997 for the extensive painting and replacement, through excellent craftsmanship, of wood portions. It also included window repair, new storm win-dows, and painting of the entire exterior of the building.

A grant proposal to Preservation Maryland was pre-pared and All Saints’ received $3,000 to assist in the project from Preservation Maryland and the Maryland Historical Trust.. At St. Mary’s monthly meeting in Sept. 2014, the members voted to fund the remaining portion of the pro-ject in the amount of $21,997. St. Mary’s derives its funds from memorials, the summer book sale, and the holiday greens sale which receive the generous support of parish-ioners.

St. Mary’s is and has been an important part of All Saints’ for 128 years. Membership includes women and men gathering for fellowship and a luncheon each month, except July and August. There is generally a speaker at the meetings. All are invited to attend by contacting Judy Haines at 301-682-9756 or John Aulls at 301-662-2360.

Calling All Saints’ Women – Save the Date! The weekend of January 23-25, 2015 is the date of the Women’s Weekend retreat at Claggett Center in nearby Buckeystown. Each year All Saints’ women have attended this excellent retreat to deepen their faith, relax with old friends or make new ones from many churches across the Diocese. This year, in addition to staying in the new Inn at Claggett, the keynote speaker will be Jana Riess, author of Flunking Sainthood: A Year of Breaking the Sabbath, Forgetting to Pray and Still Loving my Neighbor. Registration information will be available next month. If you have questions about the weekend, contact Judy Haines ( 301-682-9756 or [email protected]) or Linda Procter ([email protected] or 301-371-4955).

Commemorating 1864: 150 years after Maryland Emancipation

All Saints’ Sunday 2014 Parish Potluck followed by a

Memorial Service and Eucharist November 2, 4 p.m.-7 p.m. in the Parish Hall and

Historic Church

When midnight struck on All Saints’ Day, 1864, slaves across Mary-land were gathered in prayer and celebration. Nearly two years after President Abraham Lincoln issued the Emancipation Proclamation, slaves in the border state of Maryland were free.

This year, our parish’s Feast Day falls on an important date in American history: the 150th anniversary of the Maryland Emanci-pation. On All Saints’ Sunday this year, we will look at All Saints’ history through the eyes of our earliest African-American parish-ioners. A short video of All Saints’ history will be followed by a panel discussion with All Saints’ historians and archivists and spe-cial guests from the Diocese of Maryland’s Truth and Reconcilia-tion Commission and Asbury United Methodist’s History and Ar-chives Committee.

Come and discover the stories of free African-Americans, slaves, and slave owners who worshipped in our pews and galleries during our church’s earliest years (1742-1884). Explore the co-evolution of All Saints’ and Asbury United Methodist parish histories with special guest panelists. After the presenta-tion, Fr. Earl will lead a Memorial Service and Eucharist in the Historic Church in remembrance of enslaved parishioners in our parish records.

The program is part of a larger, Diocesan-wide initiative called the “Trail of Souls” sponsored by the Truth & Reconcilia-tion Commission. On November 1, the Commission will host a bus tour and pilgrimage, stopping at several historic churches in pre-1850s Maryland with mixed slave/free African-American parishioners. The tour ends at the Claggett Center

CELEBRATE OUR COURT STREET BUILDING WITH A FALL CONCERT SERIES

On Saturday, October 4 at 4 p.m. in the Parish Hall, we are thrilled to welcome Dr. Wayne Wold who will perform a harpsichord concert. Light refreshments will follow and admission is ‘pay what you will.’ Docent-led tours of the Court St. building will be available after the concert.

Dr. Wayne Wold is currently Associate Professor, Organist and Chair of the Music De-partment at Hood College, and served as Director of Chapel Music at Camp David for seven-teen years. Widely known as a performer and composer, over 300 of his compositions have been published, and he has toured all across the U.S. and Europe.

Dr. Wold’s musical program for the concert will include works by C.P.E. Bach, Handel, Wesley’s variations on “America,” Hewitt’s variations on ‘The Star Spangled Banner,” and a suite of spirituals in jazz and blues style.

On Sunday, November 9, at 5 p.m. in the Historic Church, the Sanctuary Choir, Jubilate Choir and All Saints’ Ringers will perform a choral concert. They will be performing sacred choral music of the early-mid 19th century (arrangements of songs/hymns from Sacred Harp, Olive Leaf, Southern Harmony, etc.).

DOCC Exploratory Discussion Dinner: If you are interested in taking the DOCC Course, but can’t decide

IF YOU WOULD LIKE TO EXPLORE whether to take the DOCC Course, please come as our guest to a Dinner Discussion Group on October 1 at 6 p.m. in the Parish Hall which is being hosted by our DOCC Alum graduates from the first course. Hear their stores and decide. Please respond ASAP to: Alyssia Gilbert in the Church Office to at-tend the DOCC Exploratory Discussion Dinner.

New Course Beginning at All Saints’ This Fall DOCC: Disciples of Christ in Community

An 18-week small group Christian Formation program for adults (age 16+), meeting on Wednesday evenings. The program begins on Wed., October 15 at 7:15 p.m.

preceded by a shared supper. Cost is $50.00 per person. DOCC is: “Exploring the Heart of Christian Faith.” Many of us have been exposed to “bits and pieces” of the

Christian faith all our lives but have never really known what it’s all about. What difference can the Christian faith really make in our lives? How can we know the depth and power it has to offer? Is there something fresh and new underneath those ancient words and beliefs?

DOCC offers a step-by-step journey into the heart and soul of Christianity along with a community of fellow-

explorers to travel with. Each session consists of a 45-minute presentation followed by an hour-long conversation in a small group, that will stay together for the entire course of 18 weeks. This second part in small groups is led by mem-bers of the congregation trained to facilitate the discussions. All presenters and facilitators have received 18 or more hours of training. The DOCC Journey depends to a large extent on the quality of the small group experience, and small groups depend on the regular attendance of participants. That means that if you know that you will have to miss more than two or three sessions, it would be best to wait and take another course another year.

Fr. Earl says: “The DOCC Journey is the finest spiritual formation experience I have known through the church,

and it can truly be a transformative and exhilarating journey!” It is necessary to sign up for this program. Please fill out the slip below and return to the All Saints’ Parish Office,

with your check (marked ‘For DOCC’ on the memo line) for $50, on or before Monday, October 6, 2014. Mail to: 106 W. Church Street, Frederick MD 21701, ATTN: DOCC

I would like to register for DOCC 2014, beginning Wed., Oct. 15. I understand that my regular attendance in this program is vital to the small-group experience for all involved.
