OUR PARTNERSSFJAZZ Education works closely with Bay Area peer organizations
and schools to create exciting programs for people of all ages. Our partners
include the Jazz Heritage Center, the Jewish Community Center of San Francisco,
Museum of the African Diaspora, Out Of Site, Old Skool Cafe, SF U nified School
District, The Jazzschool, Yerba Buena Arts & Events, Youth Speaks, and others.
OUR FACULTYSFJAZZ Education connects students of all ages and levels with some
of the leading figures in jazz education. Stellar faculty and clinicians
include members of the SFJAZZ Collective, members of our Resident
Artistic Directors, as well a s Terence Blanchard, Michel Camilo, Faye Carol,
Paul Contos, Taylor Eigsti, Peter Erskine, Mimi Fox, Vijay Iyer, Kitty Margolis,
Rebeca Maulen, Marcus Shelby, Adam Theis, Linda Tillery, Wayne Wallace,

SFJAZZ IN THE COMMUNITYThis free program provides clinics andworkshops to Bay Area middle and highschools throughout the year, offeringhands-on instruction by jazz mastersand strengthening our partnerships withBay Area schools while enabling the
recruitment of talented and diversestudents for the SFJAZZ High SchoolAll-Stars program.
SFJAZZ HIGH SCHOOLALL-STARSEstablished in 2001, the SFJAZZ HighSchool All-Stars program brings togetherthe finest young Bay Area jazz musiciansannually selected by auditionto perform,record, compose and participate in nationalfestivals and competitions, and receivementoring from world-class artists suchas the SFJAZZ Collective.
JAZZ IN THE MIDDLEFree to San Francisco public middleschools, Jazz in the Middle is a residencyprogram that brings live jazz into theschools to support academic learning,
fostering the connections betweenlanguage arts and social studiescurricula with jazz music whilebuilding partnerships with communityorganizations such as Youth Speaks.
JAZZ IN SESSIONThis free program supports jazzperformance and learning opportunitiesfor public middle school ensemblesby providing needed supplies andrepertoire as well as clinics by jazzmasters. A primary goal of the programis to offer professional developmentopportunities to band directorsas well as school administrators.
DISCOVER JAZZThis dynamic program offers musicappreciation classes for adults, providingentertaining and informative insights intojazz music, history and culture throughlive performance in addition to multi-media presentation and audience Q&A,
and is also offered in partnership with theMuseum of the African Diaspora and theJazz Heritage Center.
FAMILY MATINEESFamily Matinees feature performancesby acclaimed musicians with anemphasis on learning for the entirefamily and designed for children ingrades K-5, including post-matineeinteractive workshops that provideopportunities to learn about jazz fromsome of its greatest living masters.Free tickets are available to Bay Areaschool groups.
PRE-CONCERT TALKSDuring every concert season, SFJAZZEducation hosts intimate conversationswith renowned performing artists priorto select performances, providing deepinsight into the world of jazz throughon-stage discussions and dialogueswith the performers, and fosteringan appreciation for the artists musicand creative process.
HOTPLATE FRONT BURNERNestled between sets of the SFJAZZHotplate, a lively monthly concert seriesfeaturing Bay Area artists re-imaginingthe music of jazz legends, Front Burner isa multi-media discussion with the artistabout the life and times of the nightsfeatured jazz legend.
MONDAY NIGHT BANDThe Monday Night Band provides intermediate to advanced
musicians selected by auditiona structured approach to learningand interpreting diverse jazz repertoire, with the primary goal ofdeveloping a performance-ready program. Participants will havethe opportunity to work with an internationally renowned guest artist.
VOCAL ENSEMBLEThe SFJAZZ Vocal Ensemble is a program devoted to exploring andperforming a repertoire of contemporary jazz and world music withina highly improvisational context. This program will allow singersselected by auditionto find their voice in a supportive environmentwhile developing an understanding of myriad styles and techniques.
MASTER CLASSESThis hands-on program delves into the nuances of jazz and world musicperformance and composition, highlighting the elements that distinguishone style from another and exploring the extraordinary work of pioneeringartists. From the solos of John Coltrane to African drum techniques, masterclasses bring musicians deeper into the music.

SAXOPHONIST MIGUEL ZENN
INSTRUCTIONMusicians of all ages will have the opportunity to study with the finest jazz
and world music faculty. Each year group instruction will vary according tothe particular instruments offeredfrom guitar and woodwinds to brass andpercussion, while individual lessons will feature renowned educators andoccur on an independent basis.
DIGITAL LABThe SFJAZZ Digital Lab offers teens and adults instruction in digital musicproduction, theory and musicianship, MIDI basics, notation skills, sequencingand audio recording. Students will explore software-based tools while gainingan understanding of essential music skills to create their own music.
THE BUSINESS OF MUSICIdeal for emerging artists in any genre as well as business majors andthose interested in the arts, The Business of Music is a multi-tiered coursedesigned to provide students with a solid understanding of the intricaciesof the industryfrom publishing and copyright basics to artist management,marketing, production and beyond.
THE MUSIC OFThis three-class series brings audiences closer to the magic of jazz
through the enormous contribution of some of the musics most prolificand singular artists, such as Thelonious Monk, Antonio Carlos Jobim,Ella Fitzgerald and others, incorporating audio and video examples,live demonstration and performance.
THE ART OFThis participatory program will allow musicians to tackle specificperformance techniques while giving general audiences a fascinatingwindow into how music makers adopt new skills. From the art of the organtrio to the fundamentals of improvisation, students will gain a deeperunderstanding of jazz music.
