He said in reply, 'I was sent only to the lost sheep of the House of Israel.' But the woman had come up and was bowing low before him. 'Lord,' she said, 'help me.' He replied, 'It is not fair to take the children's food and throw it to little dogs.' She retorted, 'Ah yes, Lord; but even little dogs eat the scraps that fall from their masters' table.' The Canaanite woman- A very humble woman from our land Jesus went to the region of Tyre and Sidon in Lebanon to the re-gions inhabited by the pagan nations (who were known as Gentiles). Their Jewish neighbours, who viewed them as unclean, referred to the inhabitants of these parts as “dogs”. A Canaanite woman ap-proached Jesus asking to cure her daughter. Jesus’ reply to this needy woman seems harsh because He was testing her faith and teaching His disciples a lesson. This woman’s faith is great because it disregards all ob-stacles. She had great belief in Jesus because she called Him “Son of David,” which means she believed that he is the anointed king of Israel. This Canaanite woman was the first of a pagan back-ground to show evidence of faith in Jesus Christ as the Lord and Saviour. Tyre and Sidon Tyre and Sidon are important cities in the Old and New Tes-taments. Both are located in Lebanon. Sidon, in Aramaic meaning fishing or Saida, is a great coastal city of Phoenicia in Arabic. Tyre or Sour in Ara-bic means “rock” after the rocky formation on which the town was originally built. Jesus is testing her, trying to awaken something in her God tested Abraham, Jacob, Joseph, Job, Esther, Susannah, Judith, Gideon, and countless others. The Canaanite woman, too, is being tested. And like those of old she, too, will grow by the test. (By Father Charles Pope)

Blessed Estephan Nehme

Feast day on the 30th August Joseph Nehmé was born on 8 March 1889 in Lehfed, Jabeil, Leba-

non, the youngest of seven chil-dren of Estephanos Bou Haykal Nehmé and Christina Badawi Han-na Khaled. Baptized on 15 March 1889, at Our Lady Church of Lehfed, Nehmé studied under the

Maronite Order at Our Lady of Grace School in Sakii Rishmaya. A story from his childhood reports that he once observed a badger enter an underground cave; Nehmé dug at that spot and unearthed a spring, which is known today as "Badger's Fountain". In 1905, Nehmé entered the novitiate of the Order of Maronites at the Monastery of Ss. Cyprian and Justina in Kfifan. Nehmé made monastic vows on 23 August 1907, taking the name Stephen (variously transliterated as Estefan or Estephanos). He made solemn vows on 13 April 1924. At various monasteries, he did manual labor in the fields and gardens, as well as in carpentry and construction. Brother Estephan contemporaries made special note of his constant repetition of the mantra, "God can see me". He died of a severe fever that eventually led to apoplexy at 7 p.m. on 30 August 1938 at the monastery in Kfifan.

A thought for the week This woman came from our homeland, from Tyre and Sidon, in Lebanon; The land of martyrs, saints and true faith. How would we react if God tests us? Do we have the faith of the Canaanite woman to be satisfied with what God gives to us, even though it may be mere crumbs?

Gospel Message If we wish to obtain Christ’s

healing, we should imitate the way of the Canaanite woman, with faith and humil-ity.

The Canaanite woman teach-es us to throw ourselves into the mercy of Christ with cour-age and perseverance.

spoken as an insult. Instead, they were spoken for the purpose of calling forth her virtue and re-vealing the great treasure of faith that she had within.”

Chapter six: Some Pastoral Perspectives When death makes us feel its sting

256. It consoles us to know that those who die do not completely pass away, and faith assures us that the risen Lord will never aban-don us. Thus we can “prevent death from poisoning life, from rendering vain our love, from pushing us into the darkest chasm”.283 The Bible tells us that God created us out of love and made us in such a way that our life does not end with death (cf. Wis 3:2-3). Saint Paul speaks to us of an encounter with Christ immediately after death: “My desire is to depart and be with Christ” (Phil 1:23). With Christ, after death, there awaits us “what God has prepared for those who love him” (1 Cor 2:9). The Preface of the Liturgy of the Dead puts it nicely: “Although the certainty of death saddens us, we are consoled by the promise of future im-mortality. For the life of those who believe in you, Lord, is not ended but changed”. Indeed, “our loved ones are not lost in the shades of nothingness; hope assures us that they are in the good strong hands of God”.284 257. One way of maintaining fellowship with our loved ones is to

pray for them.285 The Bible tells us that “to pray for the dead” is “holy and pious” (2 Macc 12:44-45). “Our prayer for them is capable not only of helping them, but also of making their intercession for us effective”.286 The Book of Revelation portrays the mar-tyrs interceding for those who suffer injustice on earth (cf. Rev 6:9-11), in solidarity with this world and its histo-ry. Some saints, before dy-ing, consoled their loved ones by promising them that they would be near to help them. Saint Therese of Li-sieux wished to continue do-ing good from heaven. Saint

Dominic stated that “he would be more helpful after death… more powerful in obtaining graces”. These are truly “bonds of love”,289 because “the union of the wayfarers with the brethren who sleep in the Lord is in no way interrupted… [but] reinforced by an ex-change of spiritual goods”.

Dearly beloved, On this 12th Sunday of Pentecost, the Maronite Church reflects on the Faith of the Ca-naanite Woman. At the beginning of Matthew Chap-ter 15, the Pharisees and scribes of Jerusalem ac-cused Jesus and his followers of not respecting the rules of ritual purification, specifically for not wash-

ing their hands before eating. Jesus then challenges them to reconsider what makes a person clean or unclean. In the light of this controversy, we can better understand the encounter of Jesus with the Canaanite woman, who is a pagan, and therefore considered impure by the Jewish people. Until now, Jesus’ mission was only amongst the people of Israel. His time had not come yet to heal and perform miracles amongst the gentiles. His dialogue with the woman and her faith leads him to grant her request and it is a turning point in his mission. Similar to the blind man of Jericho, the Canaanite woman addresses Jesus using his messianic title: “Lord, Son of David, have mercy on me!” This woman who is not Jewish, is not a descendant of Abraham and, therefore, not part of the peo-ple expecting a saviour Messiah. Yet, this does not stop her from believing. She demonstrates an exemplary faith: she kneels before Jesus and addresses him, once again, as Lord. She recognises that He is the Son of God and Son of David. Driven by a bold and tenacious faith, the Canaanite woman sees in Jesus the generosity of God, who cannot limit himself to Israel. She is willing to feast on the crumbs that fall from the table of her master. Jesus recognizes her great faith and heals her daughter from afar without touch, without words. In subsequent passages of the Bible, we read about Jesus’ encounters with the Centurion and the Samaritan women and their faith, and this reveals that the mission of Jesus Christ extends beyond the Jewish community. He came for eve-ryone as we read in the letter of St Paul to the Galatians: “For all of you who were baptized into Christ have clothed yourselves with Christ. There is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither slave nor free person, there is not male and fe-male; for you are all one in Christ Jesus. And if you belong to Christ, then you are Abraham’s descendant, heirs according to the promise.” (Galatians 3:27-29).
