Masters 1Lilydale Vs Templeton

Sunday 22nd January saw Lilydale host Templeton on their lovely new resurfaced ground. The

Falcons welcomed two new recruits, one being a blast from the past 80’s legend Mr Peter

Hanrahan and Lilydale Football Club’s “Half Back of the Century” Mr Peter Skewey.

Skewsy actually opened the bowling, and once Pete got over his first game nerves, four wides

later he bowled very well. Lilydale bowled out Templeton in the 30th over for 121, Tony Simmons

2/6, ‘Showbags’ 2/12 both got the figures in probably the best team bowling performance for a

long time.

After the tea break Scotty Boyce got things going but, then it was the 80’s legend Hanra‘s time

to strut his stuff and he did not disappoint with 40 in pretty good time. Jason Baldwin made 20

not out and Simmo 25 not out saw Lilydale cruise to victory with 17 over’s to spare. A great win

for the Falcons; those 3 forfeits now keeping the Lilydale boys awake at night at what could

have been!!!!

Sth Warrandyte and Wonga were the other winners

Masters 2 Ainslie Park Vs Croydon Ranges Croydon Ranges were asked to bat first and lost a few early wickets before consolidating. John

Oren had made his way to 40 off about 24 overs, whilst the other contribution from Jack Munday

of 40 was made off about 24 balls with Captain Francis going over the fence a few times in his

first over after the Christmas break. The final total of 141 was probably a bit light on, for the

Ainslie Ground that gets notoriously quicker after Christmas.

Ainslie in chasing got off to a steady start with Len Bettess and Andrew Johnstone taking the

score to 44 before the first wicket went down (Barry O for 24). Wickets steadily fell but, then Len

Bettess was out for a steady 27, when Shade went for 9 with the score on 98 there was still a bit

of work to do. But with some good/fortunate boundaries ‘Chicken’ Werner and Ian Cubitt, the

result went in favour of Ainslie Park with the luxury of six or so overs still to be bowled.

East Ringwood v Kilsyth

Undefeated Kilsyth won the toss and elected to bat first on a warm day at East Ringwood

Reserve. They were progressing very well as Adam Luckman raced to 32 but when he top edged

a pull shot and became the first of Steve McDonalds 3 victims (3/21) East were able to stem the

run rate. When their other gun in ‘Unters’ was dismissed just shy of his 40 East were still looking

at a decent run chase, however some good bowling and some classy work behind the stumps

by Steve’s brother Mick (3 catches a stumping and a run out) saw Killy lose 6 for not many and

found themselves all out for 144 in the 30th over.

Darren Hill got the chase off to a flyer with 40 off 24 deliveries and once Peter Wright (39) joined

man of the match Steve McDonald (41) the result was beyond doubt and East coasted home

2 wickets down in the 31st over. The blaring noise ( the vets players refused to describe it as

music) coming from the pavilion as part of the $1,000 draw function undoubtedly contributed to

one of the ‘red backs’ rare poor days on the field this season.

Other winners were Bayswater Park and Montrose

Masters 3

Mooroolbark v Sth Warrandyte Hawks After being sent into bat, Sth Warrandyte made a positive start with Mulqueen playing some nice shots. A couple of wickets brought Jewel and Cleary together who made solid contributions of 34 and 32. After the dismissal of Jewel and with some very tight bowling from the Barkers the run rate slowed and the Hawks were dismissed in the final over for 113. The best of the bowlers were Colin Reyment with 3 for 12 and Justin King with 2 for 20. The Barker innings started slowly with Bolt and Peacock bowling a great line. The introduction of the run makers Jewel and Clearly saw wickets tumble at regular intervals and they finished there six over spells with 2 for 13 and 4 for 14 respectively to complete great matches. At this stage the Barkers were 6 for 38, a minor recovery was stopped with the dismissal of Joffa and at 7 for 68 the match looked over. Darren Bersey, batting through the carnage was joined by Ken Trollope and these two managed to initially blunt the bowling and then go on the attack to see the runs brought up in the 31st over in a great competitive match. Berse finished with 35no and Ken was 31no. WWD Masters 3 forfeited to BYP so no report.Other winners were Yarra Junction, Wonga and Mt Evelyn Legends

Nth Ringwood v Sth Warrandyte The Bulls hosted the Hawks at the massive ‘bullpen’ & skipper Andy Wright continued to baffle his teammates by calling correctly & electing to bat in the hot conditions. After the early loss of Jeff Luscombe, bowled by Lauchie McMahon (1/23), Nth Ringwood’s famous batting factory got into second gear machine as Craig Scott, Pete Rogers, Duke Spaulding, and ‘no first name’ Cooky pushed the score along to 171 without losing a wicket. The middle order got out chasing runs, falling in an excellent spell from Pete Reilly (3/27). Some unorthodox but effective batting from the tail produced a total of 215 for the Bulls.

Nat Young and Gary Patterson opened for the 240th time together, claiming Carl Schoonraad early for 5. Ed Garner (26) & Ken Morton (26) were particularly brutal on any substandard bowling, but Andy Wright introduced the ‘Duke’ who bowled tightly, who finished with 3 for 19 of his six. Pete Reilly (36no) & Peter Fayle (25) managed to bat most of the remaining overs with the Hawks finishing on 5/143. Bulls were very impressive in the field and look the goods in Legends this year. At the games conclusion, both teams immediately began their re-hydration regimes, so as to present themselves in the best possible condition for the next game.

Mt Evelyn vs Ranges Ranges won toss and elected to bat. Kilpatrick & Fitzgerald were untroubled by the bowlers and put on 83 for first wicket. Kilpatrick retired for 45 in 16th over and Ross retired shortly after in the 18th over for 43. MTE bowlers and fielders tightened up with 2 quick wickets to Graeme Seymour. This bought Neil Pitt to the crease and he formed the backbone for the rest of the innings, eventually retiring for a patient 41 in the 32nd over whilst wickets tumbled around him. After 36 overs Ranges was 6/194. Best for MTE bowlers were Seymour 2/35, T Dunn 1/20 and M Gavin 1/20. Mt Evelyn began the run chase disastrously with Terry Dunn being run out in 6th over for 10 and Doug Watson being dismissed for a duck to leave MTE reeling at 2/20 after 7 overs. There was some batting resistance from Kevin Dunn (19) and Gary Paget who unfortunately had to retire hurt on 19 after suffering heat exhaustion. The rest of the MTE batsmen were overwhelmed by the tight Ranges bowling and eventually were all out for a paltry 93 in the 31st over. This score was probably flattering given that Ranges dropped at least 3 catches. Best for the Ranges bowlers was Bill Artis 4/6 off 4.3 overs.MTE match highlight on an otherwise uninspiring day... Simon Mattiske taking his first ever catch in Vets Cricket.

The other winner was Warrandyte

Over 60’s Our Over 60’s travelled down to West Highett Res. to play the Bayside Blues, who always provide a keen and earnest contest. Bayside won the toss and asked Ringwood to bat; that was their first mistake as we were very close to maximum strength. On a well grassed, lush surface, Ringwood reached the daunting total of 222 for NONE after our 40 overs. I suspect that not losing a wicket and the first five Bats all retiring is a record. The damage was done by Mick Gavin, Spanner, Terry Dunn, Alan McLeish and Kevin Dunn.Bayside came out with little or no attempt at a realistic run chase and at the end of their 40 overs they were 5 down for 126. Best of our Bowlers were Trevor Barsenbach, 5 overs 2 for 11, Graeme Seymour, 6 overs 1 for 18, Robin Court, 8 overs 1 for 18, and the evergreen Alan Duffus, 2 overs 1 for 2. Our fielding was highlighted by a couple of great catches from the elastic Ian Spencer and the robotic Alan McLeish.

Inter- Association Matches between Ringwood District and Box Hill District Crickets Over 40’s Report On a damp lush Yarra Valley ground, Box Hill won the toss and had no hesitation in sending RDCA in to bat.

RDCA got off to a steady start 0-40 from 10 overs before Russell Allport injured his back and had to retire.

It seems to halt batting momentum combined with bowling changes that saw the runs dry up.The Classy Wilson Urrutia was starting to look very comfortable but unfortunately was run out, the ball before drinks with RDCA 3-70 .After the resumption of play, RDCA lost steady wickets due to some very good slow bowling and were all out in the final over for 122. There were solid batting contributions from Allport, Rowe, Urratia and Rule who all made double figures. We thought this was about 20 short of a good score and would require some very good bowling and fielding to defend. In reply Box Hill got off to a slow but solid start to be 0-20 from 8 overs due to some tight bowling from Bellizia and Rule. Bellizia grabbed the 1st wicket in his next over which was richly deserved after a great bowling spell. Our last minute Inclusion Wes Brittian then came onto bowl and changed the game with 2 wickets plus a brilliant run out ( with the help of a bullet like throw from Tony Plose of Box Hill Captain Chris Box to have Box Hill 4 for 35 and in real trouble. Then it stepped Brittian’s Wonga Park team and debutant Anthony Crowe’s turn with the ball. RDCA continued to bowl beautifully full and straight and continued dot ball pressure saw Box Hill crumble to 7-55. Crowe bowling his big in dippers finished with figures of 2-10 from his 6 overs. From then on it was only a matter of time and when Big Luke Henderson took the last wicket with the score on 78.The victory was due to a brilliant bowling and fielding performance by the RDCA.

Inter- Association Matches between Ringwood District and Box Hill District Crickets Over 50’s Report The over 50’s rep game against Box Hill Reporter District Cricket Association took place at Quambee Reserve .The RDCA won the toss and decided to have a bat with Captain Geoff Chamberlain imploring the team to bat out the 36 over’s and push for a score heading towards 200. North Ringwood’s dynamic duo of Craig Scott (23) and Peter Rogers (29) opened the batting and put on a 50 run opening stand but both fell in the same over. Dale Goldsmith (34) batted well with Dave Keenan (17) who could have been run out in single figures whilst batting with the fastest man to every run between wickets in a Legend’s game, but survived when the keeper had an attack of the fumbles. Chambo smashed the ball to all parts and was eventually dismissed for (33) with Goldy still in the teens. With Chambo’s departure Goldy took over but was soon out for a well-made 34. The innings was set up for a 200 score but some good bowling saw Wayne Hartley, Peter Clarke, Phil Hickleton all come and go with little trouble to the scorers. Some good late order batting saw the RDCA bat their over’s out and post a very healthy 9/180, a few shy of the Captains request but still a very good total.

The RDCA came out to bowl and opened with Peter Clarke and Dave Keenan. Clarkie dismissed both openers in a great debut for the RDCA and finished with the great figures of 2/16. Dave bowled very economically (0/7 off 4) and the RDCA soon had the BHRDCA on the back foot. Barry Williams bowled well without taking a wicket and finished with some much needed advise from the other side of the boundary at the drinks break and finished well with figures of 0/26 off his 6 over’s. With the run rate ever increasing Chambo brought himself on with spin dynamo Bill Artis and the spin twins wrapped up the tale Chambo 1/5 and Bill 3/21 had BHRDCA dismissed for 111.

A great win by the RDCA team well lead by Man of the Match Geoff Chamberlain.

Inter- Association Matches between Ringwood District and Box Hill District Crickets Over 60’s Report The damp conditions made bowling difficult for Ringwood and as the ball did not run quickly for the batsmen, scoring, a problem for Box Hill. The opening bowlers Robin Court and Rob Webb bowled tightly with spells of 4 (o) 0/5 and 6 (o) O/12 made runs hard to get for the Box Hill openers. With 36 overs gone, the half way mark, Box Hill were no wickets down for 60 runs before Paul Robinson struck on 67,trhen Graeme Seymour chipped in with by a smart piece of “keeping” by Chris Hartrup. The bowling honours were shared with 5 bowlers getting 1 wicket each the final wicket to fall being taken by Gary Paget with the first ball of his spell.Ringwood’s innings commenced after the break and, Garry Wallis, debuting in the O/60’s ranks, used the Box Hill pace to advantage soon retired on 40 with score on 69. Gary Paget and Kevin Dunn made good contributions with 28 and 23 respectively before being dismissed. With only five or six overs remaining the bowling and fielding tightened making runs very hard to get and it was left to Terry Dunn on 22 not out and Paul Robinson on 9 not out to get us over the line in the 36th over. Ringwood 4/147 defeated Box Hill 5/140 and helped retain the Ken (Col.) Johnson Cup. Ringwood MOM Garry Walles.
