CHESS FESTIVAL Seabrook Primary School is pleased to announce we are hosting a global chess competition at our school later this month, the first school in Australia to register. See this site for more details http://globalchessfestival
The Chess Grand Master Judit Polgar has launched the Global Chess Festival in Europe, aiming to make chess more popular across the 5 continents. Ms Polgar has given Seabrook a hearty welcome. Holding the Global Chess Festival at Seabrook Primary School will enable our students between years 2 to 6 the opportunity to undertake a competency challenge using the strategic moves used by the famous chess player Paul Morphy in his world winning game. At the end of the school day students from neighbouring primary schools will be invited to join the Judit Polgar Rapid Chess Team Competition consisting of 5 rounds competing for medals. This is an exciting opportunity to highlight the educational advantages of learning to play chess. Please browse through these articles outlining the value of chess in improving students’ overall performance.

SOCIAL NETWORKING
Respecting our laws, and rights of all individuals is a very important life skill we all must learn. Children's brains don't fully develop until they are about 25, and in particular the decision making and rational thinking zones. Children and young adults will often do things without thinking, and not care (or think) about the ramifications. Over time most will learn to think more rationally and become responsible young adults. Social Networking unfortunately, is an area that if bad decisions or negative comments are made when we are young, can mould our future in a negative way. Because our lives are now so public, bad decisions made on social networking sites earlier in life, may affect future job interviews, friendships, university acceptances, etc. Social Networking websites all own the rights to our digital content, and our (their) pictures, comments and even videos posted online, can take many years to change a Digital Footprint of someone. A negative Digital Footprint is almost impossible to correct, so that is why we must learn at a very young age to consider carefully everything that we (our children) post, put online, or send from smart devices. 1. Obey the age restrictions of software, and social networking sites, and NEVER allow underage children access if under age. The rules are there for a very good reason. 2. Teach children to THINK very carefully about what pictures, videos and comments they will eventually post online to sites like YouTube, Facebook, Twitter, Skype, Tumblr, Pinterest, Vine, Reddit, Linkedin, Instagram, etc. 3. Explain that a Digital Footprint is generally forever, and may affect their future dreams, because employers, universities and many other organizations are now all checking people's digital profiles, and behaviors online, before accepting positions. Their future direction starts at a very young age. 4. Adults should NEVER share passwords, auto save passwords, or stay logged into social networking and other data sensitive sites. 5. Explain where your children can get help should they ever find themselves in trouble. A calm, and open minded parent should always be the first point of call. 6. Know what your children are doing. Regularly check, ask, and encourage positive use, and apply your already set consequences when children don't do the correct thing, and calmly explain the ramifications of what could have happened. Educate: THINK BEFORE YOU CLICK Thank you, and lets all help make an eSmart community.
Prep Extended Stay
As part of the Seabrook Camping program, the children in Prep had their extended stay at school on the 16th of September. They had their afternoon snack and moved through some rotational activities (drama, music, dance and art) that linked in with their Unit of Inquiry. Children thoroughly enjoyed the activities and had lots of fun. We would like to thank the prep team for the well-organised and fun evening for the children. A special thank you to all our staff for their support during the extended stay. Thank you parents for supporting this event. Sundram Moodley Acting Assistant Principal

La mia musica
(My music)
In the last three weeks of term 3, I worked on a
special project in Prep ML, JG, CP, AS. We
expanded on the unit of inquiry “How we
express ourselves creatively” by using the
music language. The extraordinary thing is that
we have learnt the basics of expressing a
rhythmic pattern in Italian.
We started by learning how animals sound in
Italian through the song “Il verso degli
animali”. You can find at this link (https://
www.youtube.com/watch?v=uenTcV_riJ4)
The students created their own cards of animals
and used their pictures to compose a short
pattern of animal sounds. Then they performed
it with a partner.
At this point, we read a story (yes, all in Italian) to introduce the students to formal music notation…just a little
bit more child-friendly!
Il Signor TA Il Signor Zitto
With the help of the story and some flash cards, we started creating short rhythmic patterns and perform them
in groups.
At the end of this project, all the
students composed a rhythmic
piece that we called La mia musica
(My music).
I’m very proud of my little students’ compositions. They also performed their patterns. Some
children performed it as a solo, where some others as a two-voice composition working with a
partner. I have a few videos of their wonderful work. Feel free to join us in one of our sessions on
Tuesdays, if you want to see them in action!

Grade 4 Camp
The Grampians adventure 2015!
In the second last week of Term Three 2015, Grade 4 student went to Halls Gap, The Grampians for a three day camp that was related to our inquiry into indigenous cultures. Below are reflections from students in 4KM.
I am most proud of hitting the target in archery. Daniel S I am most proud of when I was listening to the Aboriginal presenters at Brambuk retelling a Dreamtime story. Dave I was a risk-taker when I tried archery. Jemima I was a risk-taker when I climbed the rocks at the waterfall. Travis I was a risk-taker when I tried new food for dinner and the camp cooking of the chocolate bananas and the baked apples. Corey I really liked the way I participated in all of the activities. The best one was archery because it was challenging. Coby. I got a lot better at learning more about indigenous cultures and knowing more about the history of Australia from completing activities at the camp. Antonia I am most proud of how I was committed when doing different activities that I had never done before. Athena I was sick and didn’t go to the camp, but I was wondering what activities there were. Joshua I am most proud of how I was being a risk-taker at trying the new activities. My favourite activity was hut building because now I know how the Aboriginal people used to build them. Adele I got a lot better at practising my archery, I found out that if you are right handed you use your left hand to hold the bow. Anthon
I really like the way I used my imagination and thought back to what I have done in the previous years to build a really good hut, as one of the activities at the camp. Noah I really liked the way we cooperated together when we were building the hut. I think we could improve it by letting more people have their say and incorporating these ideas to improve the design. Imogen I was a risk-taker when I did the archery because I had never done it before and it was hard to pull the string back on the bow and keep the arrow pointed straight at the same time. Alice. I really liked the way I tried my best to get the arrow to hit the target for archery. Shiraz I really like the way I was getting the arrows to go towards the target. The hardest part was trying to keep my finger balanced on one side of the arrow. Evan I enjoyed doing the hut building and the walk to the waterfall. I liked the hut building because you got to use your imagination. I liked the waterfall walk because I liked the views when you got there. Jewoseydi I thought that the camp was very exciting and interesting because I got to see indigenous items such as boomerangs and didgeridoos. Daniel L I found out that there were Australian animals at the camp such as: kookaburras, emus and kangaroos. Bojan I was a risk-taker when I threw my boomerang and tried to catch it. Eesha
Grade 4 Camp
I found it interesting that you can make stories up from different types of painting and or rock carvings. Breanna I was challenged when we had to cook the bananas for bush cooking. We had to wait until they came out of the fire to check and then eat them. Sophie I was most proud of how I tried new things on the camp such as the bush cooking. The damper was difficult to cook just right because you had to keep on turning it over the heat of the fire. Abbey I found it interesting because all around the campsite there was beautiful outback surroundings and wildlife. I found interesting that we had duty groups because we all had a chance to clean up and set up and everyone got served their food. Ela I know that Aboriginal people have tribes that they are attached to. Oliver I found it interesting that when we went to the Brambuk Cultural Centre that we saw a movie about a giant Emu and the Dreamtime story attached to it. Seth I wondered what my friends were doing at camp. I have heard about the trip my friends made to the Brambuk Cultural Centre. Hunter
