Market prices
Data on market prices
Many agencies – including NBS, the Central Bank of Nigeria, NPFS, the Abuja Commodity Exchange, the Famine Early Warning System Network (FEWS NET), State statistical bureaus, ADPs and NAERLS – collect market price data for different commodities, on different markets and with different frequencies; the agencies employ a varied set of tools, methodologies and specifications.
Market prices
Market price data from the NPFS were accessible through its NAMIS Bulletin; thus, they were not up-to-date. The NAERLS also publishes its data, on a very limited number of market prices, in newspapers and through sponsored radio programmes. FEWS NET and the Abuja Commodity Exchange also publish their market prices on their websites. The NBS’ Consumer Price Index (CPI) reports are available on its website, while its data on market prices are also available on demand.
Data on stocks
FMARD (through the Department of SGR) is the custodian of the national grain reserve. Grain stocks may be available on farms and private commercial firms, although structured data sources for these stocks are unavailable. NAERLS appears to collect data on available stocks of food commodities, from both Government silos and state-owned warehouses.
Stocks
For agricultural stocks, the SGR is responsible for data on buffer stocks at the state level; where such stocks exist, the data can be provided on demand. However, there is no clear policy to guarantee easy access to data on a regular basis. Some of the data is also withheld for national security concerns.
Data on crop production forecasts
Data on crop production forecasts are only produced by the National Agricultural Extension Research Liaison Services (NAERLS). Crop production estimates are generated by different government agencies, including the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS), the National Programme for Food Security (NPFS), and the Planning Research and Statistics Department (PRSD). The NPFS conducts the APS/Farm Output Survey and recently, under its General Household Survey (GHS) Panel, collects data on agriculture, including upon area cultivated and production obtained, reporting the relevant data at the national level. In particular, data on wheat forecasts is absent.
Crop production forecasts and production estimates
Data produced by NAELS on crop production forecasts is accessible mainly by contacting the agency itself. The agency’s publications on the survey results are only provided to governmental organizations and other partners. Although the agency has a website, it is very difficult to access and the data are not always available.
