Learner Diaries Keep a study skills diary during units 1 - 6. Your diary will be about the skills you have learnt about, and

the skills you use when you study. You should submit your diary according to the deadline given to you

by your teacher.

Task 1 – Diary Presentation - 5 Marks

You will need to:

Write the date on each entry.

Make sure you have good handwriting/neatly formatted typing and strong presentation standards.

Write entries regularly. You should aim to have around 20 entries by the time you have completed the

module.

Task 2 – Reflection - 5 Marks

You will need to reflect on your study skills and write about your achievements or difficulties. Your

reflection must be:

In every entry.

About your achievements and difficulties.

About skills and strategies for study.

About your strengths and weaknesses.

About your study goals.

Task 3 – Analysis - 5 Marks

You will need to analyse your abilities and study skills. The analysis section is where you should think

about the reasons behind what you wrote in your reflection. You will need to ask yourself why you have

been successful or unsuccessful, and why you are strong or weak in certain skills. Your analysis must:

Be in every entry.

Be about the skills and strategies you use when you study.

Identify why you are strong or weak in a certain skill.

Page 3: SCS Paper a - Final

Task 4 – Conclusions - 5 Marks

Draw conclusions from your analysis and identify areas that need focus. After analysing your abilities and

study habits you should come to some conclusions about what you should change and what you should do

next. You can use these conclusions as the basis for next week’s goals. Your conclusions must:

Be in every entry.

Be about the skills and strategies you use when you study.

Be related to your analysis.

Identify what you need to change or improve.

Task 5 – Goal Setting - 5 Marks

Once a week you must write new goals about study skills. After you reflect, analyse and draw

conclusions, you should have identified what you want to achieve. Set yourself goals that help you

improve skills and achieve more.

Goals should be:

Specific and detailed – You should write a couple of sentences for each goal to describe how you are

going to achieve the goal.

Realistic – It should be something you can achieve and something that still challenges you.

Progressive – goals should be different and become more challenging each week.

Measurable – You should be able to judge to what extent you have completed your individual goals.

Be specific about the skills and strategies you use when you study– not simply a copy of what’s on

your homework schedule.

Guidance You will practice reflecting, analysing and setting goals during the Study and Communication Skills

module. If you are unsure how to write any of the above, you should speak to your teacher.

DON’T write about your personal life – details about meeting friends, watching TV or how you

spend your free time should not be in your Learner Diary.

You do not need to worry about the quality of your English or if you actually achieve your goals. You

will only be judged on how well you reflect and analyse your study skills and habits.

You should write about how you study for all of your subjects and set goals that help you improve in

different areas.
