Merry Christmas Everyone!

Our Christmas party is soon approaching and the weather might even be good enough to drive a Model A this year. Many thanks to the Rigbys for organizing this year's event once again and to those who have put their efforts in to making this year's events special. I am looking forward to seeing everyone at the new Kensington Legion and some good turkey dinner.

I hope that everyone will be enjoying the holidays and time spent with loved ones. 2017 was a very good year for me and I wish the same for one and all in 2018. The effort to make other people's life better will enhance your own.

thTours & Activities: The Oct. 14 historical walk led by Russell Moore was well received. Members were reminded

ththat payment for the annual Christmas function is required by Nov. 25 in order to finalize arrangements with the Kensington Legion. At least 12 members then paid for their meals during the course of the evening. Thank you's were expressed to Yvon Picot and to everyone who helped him to organize the events this year.

Old Business: The name tags that had been previously ordered were distributed.

The new Executive Slate: The Members of the 2017 Executive Team were thanked for their service and the floor was turned over to Norm Devitt, our volunteer 'Returning Officer', who then proceeded to identify the two changes resulting from the current nominations and election process. Colin Outrim was welcomed as our new Vice-President and Russell Moore was welcomed as our Tours and Activities Director. Arrangements will be made to provide them with their respective copies of the 'SCMAFC Executive Guidelines publication' and to notify the Province in due course of these changes.

Technical Topics: 1) Mike Hill then began the Technical portion of the evening by discussing potential topics for future meetings. In that regard Ted Lobley will contact a chap he knows who may be available to discuss the various aspects of 'Car Detailing' and Keith Robinson will ask now retired collector car painting specialist Brian Muise if he would discuss “Painting Topics' at one of our future meetings. 2) Keith also mentioned that he and two or three other members were working with JR Smith to develop a brief advisory document intended to provide some guidance relative to our assisting the maximum number of owners to complete their annual inspections without the completion of repairs delaying the process and resulting in some cars not being inspected by day's end. 3) Colin Outtrim displayed a temperature sensor that Princess Auto is selling for $15 and which can be use to analyze brake and coolant system operations. Glenn Smith then proceeded to compliment Snyder's business acument plus display two or three of his recent purchases. He recommends Snyders as an alternative whenever Dwayne at Moir's encounters difficulty in obtaining some items.

The formal meeting adjourned at 8:45PM and was followed by a series of informal discussions, doughnuts, and coffee. ___ RWR for Gord Rouse - - SCMAFC Secretary __

TECH TALK

Sid Gough - Technical Editor

Christmas is only a few days away.

Not an A is stirring, not even an event.

They are all tucked away for their long winter's nap.

It maybe getting a little too late to hint at what should be under the tree.

Maybe a Motometer to replace that plain rad cap? A trunk rack to support that new trunk?

Seriously there are a number of gifts that would delight a Model A’er.

A framed photo of the A at a special event or location is a lasting gift.

There are a number of calendars featuring Model As. Hemmings have a beautiful one.

Use your imagination and drop your "wish list" in an obvious spot as a gentle hint to Santa.

Due to circumstances I will not be attending the Christmas Party this year.

So I will take this opportunity to wish one and all " MERRY CHRISTMAS and a GREAT NEW YEAR!!"

A Thank you to our Advertisers!

As the start of yet another year approaches it is appropriate that we take a moment to express appreciation to our advertisers, not only for the valuable revenue they generate for this non-profit organization of ours, but also for the excellent standard of service they provide to our members.

In that regard we must also thank our own members who have identified potential advertisers or elicited ads from them, as well as our volunteers who annually contact our various suppliers and advertisers with a view to having them renew their ads for the subsequent year.

Lastly, a reminder to our members that if they have received service from an organization worthy of spreading the word to their fellow members, the most effective way of spreading the word is via an ad in the ‘Script’. Rate information, etc. is available via any member of the Executive Team listed on Page 2 of each edition.

Oregon Engine Rebuilders Technical Bulletin

November 2007 TB 2333R Camshaft Break-In Using Zinc for Flat Tappet Camshafts.

The AERA Technical Committee offers the following information regarding camshaft break-in using Zinc for flat tappet camshafts. The information in this bulletin warns about the reduction of Zinc in gasoline engine oils which has been traced to many camshaft and flat tappet lifter failures. This information should be considered for any engine that uses a flat tappet design and should be referenced before initial engine start-up. Also refer to AERA Technical Bulletin, TB 1935, to help prevent other possible component failures. The current engine oils used by engine manufacturers in new car production are not applicable for initial flat tappet camshaft break-in. Those newer oils are less desirable than older formulations which have better wear additives than the current SM category oils. With the advent of roller lifters/cams as well as roller rockers, the need for those expensive elements has diminished. Emission laws have caused the reduction of Zinc and Phosphorus in the current oils because as they pass through the exhaust they plate themselves to the inside of the catalytic converter. This plating action does not create a restriction or increase back pressure but it renders the function of the catalytic converter useless. Eventually, this non function will turn on a check engine light for emissions failure. Numerous AERA members report premature flat tappet camshaft failure during or after break-in. This has been an ongoing issue of late and not just with one brand or type of camshaft. In almost every case, the hardness or the taper of the cam lobe and lifter were within specifications. The reduction of Zinc in most of today's oil products and “advanced” internal engine design have contributed to a harsher environment for the flat tappet camshaft to survive. That reduction has greatly increased the potential for cam lobe failure during engine break-in. Diesel engine oils produced before January 2007 had a CI-4 oil designation and offer higher levels of Zinc and wear preventive additives than passenger car oils. BUT, after January 2007, the CJ-4 oil designation for new truck engine manufacturers mandates oils with a reduction in Zinc. Off-Road truck and racing engine oils have a higher Zinc content because the engines do not use catalytic converters. All of the oils listed below have flashpoints above 400° F. Do not break-in a flat tappet camshaft and lifters using synthetic oil. Delo 400 CI-4 15w-40 DelvacCI-4 15w-40 Rotella T CI-4 15w-40 Phosphorus 1375 Phosphorus 1120 Phosphorus 1326 Zinc 1376 PPM before 07 Zinc 1231 PPM before 07 Zinc 1499 PPM before 07 Zinc 1200 CJ-4, Jan 2007 Moly 35 Zinc 1200 CJ-4, Jan 2007 Zinc 1200 CJ-4, Jan 2007 Adding additional Zinc for camshaft and lifter break-in by using GM Engine Oil Supplement (EOS) or using any supplant supplied from any of the aftermarket cam manufacturers. All camshaft manufacturers are aware of the reduction of Zinc and changes in engine oils formulations. For many years they have offered camshaft assembly lube and break-in lube for their products, so USE IT. Liberal amounts of this lube during assembly on all moving or rotating points will offer a front line defense as soon as the engine is rotated. GM recommends pouring a pint bottle of their EOS over the crankshaft before installing the oil pan.

It is hard to believe that 2017 is coming to a close. The year has had its challenges and definitely its learning moments for me. I’ve had a great year of meeting so many of our wonderful members and driving my A with new friends.

Henry Ford is quoted as saying, “Coming together is a beginning, keeping together is progress, and working together is success.” The 2017 Board of Directors came together, stayed together and worked very well together! I want to thank all of the Directors who served this year on the Board. You’ve made the management decisions that have allowed our club to run so effectively. We worked hard and even got in some great social time; forming some really good friendships along the way. I feel we had a very successful year! Thank you all!

I hope you have purchased your Christmas Cards for 2017; they are available in the MAFCA Store. The design, this year, is another cover from a past Restorer magazine. It depicts a family loading the Model A sedan with gifts for friends and family.

Have you sent in your mileage for the 100K in A Day Challenge? It’s not too late! The program has been extended to the end of 2017. Be sure your miles count. Send mileage to [email protected], today!

The 2018 Convention, to be held in Reno, NV, is now accepting registrations. For more information and registration forms, visit this link: 2018 MAFCA Convention. <http://www.ncrgmafca.com/2018MAFCAConvention/2018index.html>

It is with sadness that we are saying goodbye to our magazine editor, Jim Spawn. Jim has continuously produced an award-winning magazine that our club has enjoyed for 17 years. We all wish you the very best in your retirement as Editor of The Restorer, and we look forward to seeing you at events in the future.

I, also, want to thank our staff in La Habra, Brenda and Juanita. Plus, the woman behind the Board who deserves so many thanks, Sandra; without your assistance and ever amazing organizational skills, MAFCA would not be what it is today. I thank you from the bottom of my heart for all of your guidance over my 4 years on the Board.

It was with great pleasure that I began 2017 and MAFCA’s 60th Anniversary year as your President. I want to thank the MAFCA Board for their support and confidence in me. To all of you, our members, who love these cars, I wish to say that I am very pleased to have been able to serve as MAFCA’s 2017 President.

I wish you all a very Merry Christmas and the happiest of New Years!

Happy Begg2017 MAFCA President

I purchased a set of NOS plates. Even if I owned a 1930 car I could not bring myself to put these on a car. So I put them in a shadow box with the original paper envelope.

For Sale by Fred Holt: An early AR Model A four door sedan that was cut down into a ‘Jitney Type Truck’.

Fred says: The drive train is fairly complete and I did manage to make it run plus the clutch, rear end, and transmission all seem to work as they should. The honey comb rad still holds water although the hoses are no good. (I had it running while on jack stands in the shop).

It has a really good AR frame and drive train but the body cannot be saved even though the cowl and windshield seem to be good. I do have the four doors off the original sedan and the sheet metal on them is great but being wood framed the doors are not in the best condition overall.

The tires are completely shot but there are 3 AR wire wheels that seem fine but as always that is a matter of opinion. I do have a few more wire wheels in my pile of stuff and I’m sure I could make up a set of 5 if someone needs them.

Whomever maybe interested just give me a call re: any questions you may have and to chat about its value!

Teri and I wish all of the SCMAFC Members a great holiday season! Fred Holt. (1-403-548-4789 Cell. 1-403-527-9743 Res.).
