Expressions of sympathy are suggested to Constantine United Methodist Church or Hudson Cemetery. Sir Winston Churchill stands as a major figure in 20th century history and, perhaps, is one of the greatest personalities in the history of the world. Pos- sessing an incredible intel- lect, Churchill was a giſted historian, author, lecturer, and painter as well as one of the greatest statesmen of all time. He served as head of Great Britain’s navy and became prime minister of the nation during one of her most desperate hours. It was Churchill who stood up to Adolf Hitler and the Nazi war machine that was sweeping across Europe in 1940. Because of Churchill’s courage and leadership, England sur- vived “e Battle of Brit- ain” that turned the tide of the war. Following World War II, in 1946, Churchill gave a prophetic warn- ing to a college audience in Missouri that an “Iron Curtain” of Communist tyranny was being built in Eastern Europe. Yet for all his efforts as a champion for democracy, Churchill remained perplexed and depressed at the violence, death, and oppression that continued on the world scene. Billy Graham met Churchill for the first time when the evangelist arrived in London for a crusade in 1954. In a very open moment, Churchill said to Graham, “I am an old man without hope. What hope do you have for the world, Minister’s Corner young man?” Graham opened his Bible and began to share Scripture with the old man of England. “Mr. Prime Minister,” Graham said, “I am filled with great hope.” Graham talked of the life of Jesus Christ, His death on the cross for the sins of the world, His resur- rection from the dead, and the certainty that He will return to earth as Lord and King. Dr. Graham is now very much in the twilight years of his life. e man who may have once been the greatest spokesman for the Gospel of Christ is now homebound and suffers from Parkinson’s Disease. In his final book, “Nearing Home,” Graham reflects on his life and the fact that his journey here on earth will soon conclude. He knows, however, of the guarantee of God found in the New Testament letter of Titus that speaks the hope of eternal life in Christ “which God, who cannot lie, prom- ised before time began” (1:2). Titus also tells us that the grace of God that brings salvation has appeared to everyone (2:11) and that Christians both living and dead now look “for the blessed hope and glorious appearing of our great God and Savior Jesus Christ” (2:13). e apostle Peter encour- ages every man and woman transformed by Christ’s saving grace to “always be ready to give an answer to everyone who asks you a reason for the hope that is within you” (1 Peter 3:15). Whatever may come in this world, do you have that hope?
