THE Festival of Samhain, orwhat is now known asHalloween, is a great
opportunity for tour companiesin Scotland to take
unsuspecting tourists and chillseekers to old castles and scare
them witless. JedburghCastle in the Scottish Borders- a medieval castle and formertown gallows - is said to house
the ghosts of the jailor andsome prison inmates. On darknights (of course) the refrain ofa lone piper is said to be heard
coming from behind theboundary wall. Culzean Castlein Ayrshire also has a ghostlypiper who is reputed to havebeen searching caves beneath
the castle when hedisappeared, and he too can be
heard of stormy nights.

EVERY year, some anonymous person inour neighbourhood leaves a note in all theletterboxes telling us that Halloween isapproaching, that it is an Americantradition that has just caught on inAustralia and that children will beknocking on our doors wanting ‘candy’.Every year, I want to find this person andexplain to him or her that we do know thatHalloween is always celebrated on October31 (but thanks for the reminder) and that the tradition ofentertaining for sweets, or trick or treating for candy, did notoriginate in America. The Celtic year was determined by thegrowing seasons. The festival of Samhain (sah-win) marked the endof the harvest season and the beginning of winter or the darker halfof the year. It also symbolised the boundary between the world ofthe living and the world of the dead - October 31 is also known asAll Souls Day. Bonfires and neep lanterns with a candle inside aresupposed to ward off evil spirits, for as we know from Robert Burns’poem Halloween it’s all about the supernatural, witches, spirits andfire. No matter where it is celebrated, Halloween is just a bit of funfor kids to get dressed up and take home a swag of sweets, but it’sgood to reflect on how the seasons, and people’s belief in thesupernatural, once ruled their lives. Many traditions, sadly, are fastdisappearing from our lives. As well as CDs we have tickets to winto the latest Queensland Pops Orchestra concert in Brisbane - seepage 3 for details and get in early. October 11, 1297Letter from William Wallace
sent to the Mayorof Lubeck in Germany
ONE of the few relics remaining ofScotland’s great hero WilliamWallace is a letter he sent after thevictory over the English at thebattle of Stirling Bridge, to themayor of Lubeck inviting Germanmerchants to begin trading directlywith Scotland, since the ports wereno longer under English control. Originally thought to have beendestroyed in World War II, theletter was found intact in a Lubeckmuseum and, after somecampaigning, it has been given tothe Museum of Scotland ‘on loan’. The ‘Lubeck letter’, as it hasbecome known, was discoveredpreserved in the Lubeck archives inthe 1820s. In 1942, Lubeck (on theBaltic coast of Germany) wasattacked by Allied aircraft. As aresult, the town’s archives, including the letter, were moved toa salt mine for safety. At the endof the war, the Soviet army tookthe papers east. The archives werelater handed over to the archiveadministration of East Germany, but the medieval documents werenot among the records. It wasassumed that they had been lost.In the 1970s, Lubeck documentswere found in the archives of theUSSR. In 1990, after somenegotiation, the town’s medievalrecords, including the letter fromWallace, were returned to Lubeck. The front of the seal on the letterbears the lion rampant, atraditional emblem of the Scottishmonarchy. The back of the sealshows a bow and string with aprotruding arrow held by tworingers which is thought to beWilliam Wallace’s own seal, and isthe only impression known to exist. The design suggests that hepractised archery. There is debate about whether theletter should reside in Scotland orwith the people of Lubeck.
Dr Alan Borthwick from the National Records ofScotland translated the letter in 2012.

ANDREW Petrie was born inFifeshire, Scotland in 1798 andtrained as an architect and builderin Edinburgh. He set up his ownbusiness and in 1831 was one ofthe Scottish mechanics brought toSydney on the Stirling Castle byJohn Dunmore Lang as thenucleus of a new force of freeworkers. He accepted a post as a clerk inthe Ordnance Department inSydney, and when there was anurgent appeal from Moreton Bayfor a competent builder to repaircrumbling structures, Petrie wassent there as a clerk of works. His first important task was torepair the mechanism of thewindmill which had neverworked. His general duty was thesupervision of prisoners engagedin making necessities such as soapand nails, and in building. His work took him to severalconvict outposts and gave him ataste for travel and exploration. His private journeys soon addedto knowledge of the immediateenvirons of the settlement. When the convict station wasremoved in 1839, Petrie saw theopportunity of building a freecommunity, and he and his familyremained to contribute to its
formation. He was able to pursuehis interests as a builder andarchitect. He was the first white man toclimb Mount Beerwah, one of theGlass House Mountains seen byJames Cook in Queensland, andwas also the first to bring backsamples of the Bunya pine tree. In 1842, with a small party in aboat, he discovered the Mary Riverand brough back to the settlementtwo ‘wild white men’, James Davisor’Duramboi’ and DavidBracewell or ‘Wandi’. Petrie lost his eyesight in 1848,because of inefficient surgery afteran attack of sandy blight, but hekept control over his business andwas still able to design ferrylandings and a bridge overBreakfast Creek. When planswere explained to him, he orderedthe necessary quantities ofmaterial and was even able tocheck the performance of hisbuilding workers - he used hiscane if he was not satisfied withtheir work. Together with his wife MaryCuthbertson (whom he married inEdinburgh in 1821) he had ninesons and one daughter. Withadvancing years he handed overmore and more control to his eldest
son, John Petrie, who became firstmayor of Brisbane. His fourth son,Thomas, gained much knowledgeof the Aboriginal tribes and theircustoms and languages. The Petries’ house was one of thesocial centres of Brisbane andreadily offered accommodation tosquatters coming from theoutback, especially in the daysbefore Brisbane had inns. AndrewPetrie was known for hisgenerosity to people who weredown on their luck and wasalways willing to help out withfood and work. I was in Edinburgh for this year’s Royal Edinburgh Military Tattooand it didn’t disappoint. I’ve always loved the pageantry of thepipes and drums and dancers and vocalists, but with all the addedtechnical wizardry and fireworks it is an event that is something outof this world. As a third generation Scot living in Australia, andwhile I have visited Scotland before, I’ve only ever seen the Tattoo ontelevision - what a dream to be there in the crowd and witness thisspectacle. YOUR story about the miningdiaster at Knockshinnoch inNew Cumnock in Scotland is atimely reminder for us all to stopand remember the nation’shistory. Scotland relied heavilyon the mining industry in the18th and 19th centuries and theconditions in which some of theearly miners worked wereinhumane. When a tragedy likethis happens, with so many liveslost and others mentally andphysically scarred for life, it isnot just the people immediatelyinvolved but their families andthe whole community that feelthe loss. We must remember andhonour those who have gonebefore us so that we can fullyappreciate the freedom andsafety we have now in our lives.Peter Finlayson, Bundabergformerly of Muirkirk, Scotland(Well said, Peter.
