Women’s Lacrosse: Simply Spectacular

Fall Season Wrap–Up

Men’s Soccer

The Men’s Soccer team had a strong year finishing second in the Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) with a 6–1–2 record behind Western New England University (WNE). They advanced to the semifinals of the CCC Tournament posting an 8–8–3 overall record.

The Scots kicked off 2011–12 as they traveled to Sao Paulo, Brazil to partner with Goal International Group Foundation (GIGF) on a two-week playing and service tour throughout Brazil. The team ran clinics for local youth populations and visited area schools and churches connected with GIGF. In addition to service work, the men played five exhibition matches against both amateur and professional teams. The experience on and off the field was invaluable to their growth and development for the upcoming season.

The team opened the season with victories in nine of the first 10 games and finished second in the CCC. In the CCC quarterfinal game on Gordon's quad, the Scots captured a commanding 3–0 win over the visiting Seahawks of Salve Regina University. It was an intense game right from the start. Gordon established their pace with a goal in the sixteenth minute. They added one more toward the end of the first half and controlled the rest of the game from there with a 3–0 victory. Goals were scored by Andrew Vandervoot (So./Memphis, TN), Kellen Kasiguran (Jr./Oakwood Village, OH), and Kristian Kasiguran (Fr./Oakwood Village, OH).

Gordon hosted Nichols College for a well-played, edge of your seat semifinal match. With an overtime goal, the Bison took a 2–1 victory. Although it was an unfortunate way to end the season, the fight and tenacity shown in this game proved that Gordon is and will be a team to be reckoned with. Many Scots players received CCC honors for the 2011–12 season. Micah Linn (Sr./Germantown, TN) was named the CCC Co-Defensive Player of the Year and as First Team All-CCC. Andrew Vandervoot was named the CCC Offensive Player of the Year for his impressive performance throughout the season. The team shows great young talent, as Kristian Kasiguran was named the CCC Rookie of the Year. Blake Berkey (Sr./Akron, OH) showed what it means to be a student athlete as he was named the CCC Senior Scholar-Athlete of the Year.

Fall Season Wrap–UpWomen’s Soccer

The Women’s Soccer team had another strong year with a 5–4 conference record and a 10–8 overall record.

After a brief ceremony to honor the team's six seniors in their final home match, the Scots went on to close out the regular season with a 2–1 victory over non-conference Suffolk. Despite both teams creating several scoring opportunities, the score remained deadlocked until late in the game when junior midfielder Karina Scavo (Mount Sinai, NY) scored from close range to give the Scots the go-ahead goal with seven minutes to play. Gordon would hold that score thanks in part to an outstanding diving save from keeper Kari Christensen (So./Standish, ME) in the waning minutes to preserve the one-goal win.

The Scots had three players recognized by the CCC at the end of their year for their outstanding performances. Scavo completed the season with First Team All-CCC honors, while Caitlin Nedde (Jr./Colchester, VT) and Hala Coker (Sr./East Falmouth, MA) received Second Team All-CCC honors.

Field Hockey

In the difficult Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC), Field Hockey had an impressive year, finishing the season fourth with a 4–6 record. The team made the semifinals of the CCC tournament, an improvement from the quarterfinals last year. The team finished 9–12 overall.

Although they faced struggles, the women showed their strength and true potential in many games. In a non-conference matchup with Rivier College, the Scots dominated with a commanding 12–0 win over the Raiders. With a standout performance, Samantha Neverett (Sr./Athol, MA) set Gordon records for most goals in a game and most points in a game, while Melinda Fowler (Jr./Winslow, ME) tied the single-game assist record.

Off the field, Ashley Moulton (Sr./North Reading, MA), a forward, sported a 3.87 GPA as a double major in psychology and communication arts, which earned her a spot on the CCC All-Academic team three times as well as the National Field Hockey Coaches Association National Academic team. Neverett earned First Team All–CCC honors while Gayle Watson (Fr./Harare, Zimbabwe) and Melanie Landis (So./Quakertown, PA) received Second Team All–CCC honors.

Women’s Volleyball

The Women’s Volleyball team keeps improving and seems to be on the rise to reclaim a distinguished name in the Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC). Their 13–15 overall record this year was their best since 2008.

The Scots began their season by hosting a home tournament in which they faced St. Joseph’s, Simmons, and Bay Path. They started off the tournament against St. Joseph's and cruised to a 3–0 win (25–17, 25–8, 25–12). Though the women were on the brink of defeat in their second set against Simmons, they were determined not to go down quietly. The Scots battled back from a two set deficit to claim wins in the next three sets (25–18, 25–20, 25–12). This preserved what would be a five-match unbeaten streak to open the season. After Bay Path jumped out to an early lead with a 25–22 win in set one of three, the Scots were once again faced with having to rally from an early deficit. And rally they did, winning the next three straight to win 3–1 (22–25, 25–15, 25–19, 25–22). The team showed a lot of heart and determination throughout this tournament to end the day undefeated.

Later in the season, the Scots hosted Salem State University in their Homecoming match and captured a 3–1 non-conference win. Standing on a pair of wins after taking the opening sets 25–14 and 25–18, the Scots had their sights set on perfecting the sweep. Despite Salem State’s efforts to form a late comeback, the team would not be outdone in front of their home crowd. The Scots responded with their most commanding win of the day, downing the Vikings 25–10 in the fourth to stamp the win.

Women’s Tennis

In a Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) matchup with Eastern Nazarene, the Scots cruised to a 7–2 win. Kallie Garrett (Sr./Bend, OR) and Hannah Damon (Fr./Mystic, CT) completed an 8–0 sweep at No. 2 doubles and Kristin Dillon (So./Exeter, ME) and Katie Madison (Jr./Longfield, WA) captured an 8–5 win at No. 3. The Scots went on to claim four out of five of their singles matches as Garrett, Dillon, and Alyssa McCarthy (So./Rehoboth, Mass.) had particularly strong showings for Gordon, each recording one 6–0 set in their respective wins at No. 1, No. 5, and No. 4 singles.

Commissioner Gregg Kaye and the CCC named Gordon senior Kallie Garrett an All-CCC Women's Tennis Honorable Mention honoree for her efforts over the course of the Fighting Scots' 2011 season. Additionally, the Scots garnered the CCC Team Sportsmanship Award, a distinction voted upon by all conference coaches on the basis of play and character in competition.

2011 Homecoming Weekend

Fall Season Wrap–Up

Women’s XCImproving drastically from last year, the Women’s Cross Country team ran well in the Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) Championship, qualifying for a bid in the NCAA tournament.

At the CCC Championship, Allison Lynch (Sr./Holliston, MA) placed an impressive fourth out of 103 runners on the 6k course, coming in at 24:32 to earn herself All-Conference honors. Teammates Kelcy Rich (Sr./Hudson, MA), Emily Urquhart (Fr./White River Junction, VT) and Katie Hakanson-Stacy (Jr./East Longmeadow, MA) earned the 14th, 15th, and 17th place, respectively, crossing the finish within six seconds of each other. As a team the Scots dropped 44 seconds off last year's overall average time to place fourth out of the eight competing teams.

At the NCAA Tournament, the women were led by Urquhart (Fr./White River Junction, VT), who finished third among CCC runners with a 23:46 finish. In school history, her performance was the seventh highest finish ever at the NCAA Regional meet and places her as the fourth-fastest 6k female runner. Overall, the women's team jumped up from last year to finish third of the CCC competitors with a score of 758, improving 254 points over the 2010–2011 season.

Lynch was honored as a CCC Runner of the Week and earned First Team All-CCC honors at the end of the season. Hakanson-Stacy truly portrayed what it means to be a student athlete and was honored as the Gordon Female Scholar-Athlete of the Year.

Men’s XC

Men’s Cross Country had a fantastic year and finished exceptionally strong in the Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) Championship and the New England Regionals.

Taking on the best from around the conference in the CCC Championship, the Scots battled through tough conditions to place fourth. Josh Porizky (Jr./Groton, CT) earned All-Conference honors with a seventh place finish overall, finishing in 28:16 on the 8k course. Not far behind was Levi Miller (Sr./Coopersburg, PA), who finished in twelfth place with a 28:30 result.

In the New England Regionals, the Scots saved some of their best performances for last as several runners posted their best times of the 2011 season. The men were led by Porizky, who posted the best race of his season with a 27:39 finish. Perhaps the race of the day on the men's side, however, went to Andrew Kwiatkowski (So./Yorktown Heights, NY), who dropped over a minute from his previous best to run his fastest race ever as a Scot, at 28:31. The men improved their team score from last year by 20 points. 

Coach Andrew Shaw said, "Almost everyone who ran today had their best race of the season and there is nothing more that I could have asked for from this great group of men…. We should return a lot more runners next year and today's race will help build the foundation for the years to come."

Porizky was named First Team All-CCC for his outstanding performance throughout the year, while Miller was the Gordon Male Scholar-Athlete of the Year.

Winter Season Wrap–UpMen’s Basketball

The 2011–12 men’s basketball team came out strong. They started off the year with a five-game win streak in the Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) and battled with every team they faced throughout the season.

Hosting the second place Leopards of Wentworth Institute in their final home game of the regular season, the Scots celebrated their Senior Night in style, rolling to an 80–57 win over their guests to finish 8–9 in CCC action for the season. The Leopards were one of the toughest teams that the men faced all year. The Scots shot an impressive 59 percent from the floor on the night en route to the 23-point win. Leading the charge was Park Thomas (So./Scottsdale, AZ) with 18 points, seven assists, three steals and only two turnovers. Garret Harden (Sr./Whitinsville, MA) recorded 12 points and David Dempsey (Jr./Wallingford, CT) chipped in 11. This was a big win against the second best team in the conference. The Scots’ dominance in this performance showed their strong capability and potential.

The Scots made it to the quarterfinals of the CCC tournament, where they once again faced a talented Wentworth team. Unfortunately, the second-seeded Wentworth men’s basketball team held off upset-minded Gordon in the CCC quarterfinal game 67–74 in overtime. The team proved once again that they can compete with the top of the conference.

Both David Dempsey and Hans Miersma (Fr./Whitinsville, MA) were selected as a CCC Player of the Week during the season. Dempsey’s continued success throughout the season earned him First Team All-CCC honors. In addition to Dempsey's honor, the Scots were also recipients of the Team Sportsmanship Award, an honor they share with Wentworth Institute of Technology.

Dempsey was honored as a member of the 2012 All-CCC First Team for his standout efforts for the Scots this season. Dempsey was a major contributor on both ends of the floor all season long, pacing the Scots' campaign as the team's leading scorer with 17.1 points per game and second-leading rebounder with 7.4 per game. He hit a benchmark in his career by breaking the 1,000-point barrier on the road at Nichols. Head Coach Tod Murphy said of Dempsey’s milestone, "To accomplish this feat in less than three years is truly amazing, especially when you consider he played his freshman season in the shadow of such great players and scorers like Aaron Trigg, Brady Bajema, and Greg Walker. He has been incredibly consistent during his three years here at Gordon, and I’m not sure where this program would be without him.”

Winter Season Wrap–UpWomen’s Basketball

The Scots seem to be on the rise as a young team has led them to an impressive season. The women fought through every game against top teams in the Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC).

Winning a nail biter, the Scots closed out 2011–12 on a high note after a buzzer beater layup from Catey Marshall (Sr./St.Johnsbury, VT) that lifted them to a 41–40 road win over non-conference Johnson & Wales. The team showed true determination and fight until the end in a frustrating defense–dominated game. Gordon’s offense was able to wear the defense down in the last seconds of the game to walk away with a victory. The girls ended the season with a 7–18 overall record. The exciting victory against Johnson & Wales defined by true grit displays a characteristic that the Scots look to take into the next season as they prepare for 2012–13.

The Women’s Basketball team is moving in the right direction, as returning players improve and the recruiting process continues to be a success. Freshman Leanna Tallamy (Fr./Wantage, NJ), dominated the CCC. "Our team has high goals for next season and we are all excited to continue to work in the off-season and build on some of these individual successes," said Head Coach Julie Brown. The girls have shown that they understand what it means to be a team, and they have worked together in order to continually improve. This improvement is sure to increase as a talented young team seeks to have their name feared throughout the CCC.

Winter Season Wrap–UpMen’s Swimming

This men’s team had a fine season, setting many personal and school records.

The Scots took on Division II Bentley College in non-conference action. They posted impressive individual and collective results. Morgan Zablocki (So./Walnut Creek, CA) recorded a top finish in the 50 breaststroke, edging his nearest competition by half a second with a 30.42 time. Kyle Tofteroo (Fr./Avon, MA), Brian Pearson (Jr./Kennebunk, ME) and Marcos Castellano (Jr./Lynn, MA) earned the top three finishes, respectively, in the 100 IM, while Brett Johnson (Fr./Easton, MA), Austin Drukker (Fr./Bedford, MA), Kyle Tofteroo and Morgan Zablocki took top honors in the 200 freestyle relay (1:40.98). Though they didn’t come out victorious as a team, having this many top finishes against a Division II opponent shows the potential of this young swimming team.

The Scots finished the season with some of their best times at the New England Championships, breaking school and personal records. On the opening day of competition three swimmers booked personal records, with Johnson posting a 24.22 in the 50 freestyle and a 58.82 in the 100 butterfly, Greg Gutgsell (Jr./Jericho, VT) a 33.50 in the 50 breaststroke, and Drukker a 2:10.31 in the 200 backstroke. On the second day of competition Drukker carried his momentum from the first day’s successes into the events, breaking his own personal record in the 100 backstroke with a 1:00.05 time while teammate Tofteroo also set a PR in the 200 freestyle (1:58.68) and a Gordon record 19:07.25 in the 1650. Zablocki was impressive in the lanes as well, setting a new school record in the 100 breaststroke (1:02.25) only to break it later in the day with a 1:01.70 time. In the final day of competition, Zablocki closed out the season with gusto, breaking his personal record in the 200 breaststroke with a 2:16.51 result en route to an All-New England nod.

Women’s Swimming

Competing at the New England Collegiate Championships in White River Junction, VT, the Scots set both school and personal records in the opening days of competition against some of New England's best to finish out their 2012 campaign. On the first day of competition, Cassie Buchanan (Sr./Woodbridge, CA) had a banner morning for the Scots, establishing a new Gordon record in the 100 butterfly with a 1:03.73. Setting personal records in the 50 breaststroke were teammates Katie Zablocki (Fr./Walnut Creek, CA), Abigail Nash (Fr./Essex, VT) and Sarah Salcone (Fr./Freton, NJ), who came in at 33.35, 35.21 and 36.79, respectively. Also setting personal bests were Emily Boyd (Fr./Methuen, MA) in the 100 backstroke (1:12.61) and Julianne Kirkpatrick (Fr./Rochester, NY) in the 50 freestyle (26.51). On day two of competition, the women continued to show well in the lanes for Gordon, with Buchanan breaking her own 50 butterfly record with a 28.71 finish. Setting personal bests were Salcone in the 50 fly (31.73), Julie Kirkpatrick in the 200 freestyle (2:06.22) and Kristen Entwistle (Sr./Canton, OH) in the 1000 freestyle (12:12.90).

Spring Season Wrap–Up

Women’s Lacrosse

Women’s Lacrosse was simply spectacular this year. They finished 14–4 overall, standing strong with a 5–2 record in the Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC). The team finished third in the CCC in the regular season and second in the CCC Championship.

The Scots advanced to the conference semifinals with a 20–12 win over sixth-seeded Western New England in the tournament’s opening round.

• Anna Blomberg (So./Simsbury, CT) led all scorers with a phenomenal eight-goal, one-assist, and five draw controls performance.

• Jordan Alexander (Sr./Portland, ME) also recorded nine points off five goals and four assists.

• Jocie Knaus (Sr./Kensington, CT) had a solid outing with three goals.

• Kari Christensen (So./Standish, ME) netted two.

• Stephanie Fitzgerald (So./Groveland, MA) and Abby Illian (Fr./Hillsdale, NJ) added a goal and an assist each.

• Fitzgerald and Krysti Leach (Sr./Naples, ME) collected seven and five draw controls, respectively.

• Danielle Maguire (So./Braintree, MA) stopped an impressive 15 of the Golden Bears’ shots.

Spring Season Wrap–Up

Against No. 2 University of New England (UNE), Gordon College went on a 5–0 run that ended the first half. They began the second holding onto a lead they would not relinquish on the way to a 13–10 victory over UNE in the CCC’s semifinals. Leach corralled team highs of six ground balls, three caused turnovers, and seven draws for the Scots. Maguire posted five stops between the pipes.

Gordon fought a tight battle in the championship match-up against rival Endicott. The Scots gave it everything they had and kept Endicott on their toes the entire game. Students, faculty, and fans packed the stands with record attendance. Led by President Lindsay and the PIT, the school rallied behind the women. Although Gordon was edged 14–20, it did not define the season as a disappointment in any way. This was a season of many successes and many victories—one to be remembered.

Spring Season Wrap–Up

Men’s Lacrosse

The Men’s Lacrosse team showed their ruthless determination this year in every game they played. Upsetting University of New England (UNE) in the Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) tournament was one of many highlights for these Scots. The Scots finished 3–4 in conference and an even 8-8 against a difficult schedule overall.

In the CCC quarterfinals, UNE got the first shot off in the extra session, but Gordon goalie Houston Zemanski (Jr./Annapolis, MD) came up with a clutch save on the Nor’easters’ break. Gordon established possession in the offensive zone and set up Dan Perednia (Sr./Granby, CT), who curled from the top of the box down the right side and bounced the game-winner into the lower left corner. Perednia scored 1:08 into overtime to give fifth-seeded Gordon College a 9–8 overtime win over fourth–seeded UNE in the CCC quarterfinals. Perednia scored four of his five goals on the day after halftime.

The Scots duked it out with Western New England (WNE), who were ranked 16th in the USILA Division III Poll. Gordon was only down by one deep into the first half, but lost the game. Although dealing with a loss, these men realized that they could fight with the best of them. They held their own against WNE for a large portion of that game and proved that they are a strong contender in the CCC.

Student athletes from seven different institutions in the Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC)—including six Fighting Scots—were represented on the 2012 All-CCC Men’s Lacrosse Team. Voting for the All-CCC team and each of the major awards was conducted among CCC men’s lacrosse head coaches. Earning First Team honors were midfielder Wes Chittick (Sr./Glenside, PA) and long-stick midfielder Ian Knechtle (So./New Canaan, CT), while midfielder Adam Quinn (Sr./Gloucester, MA) was named to the Second Team and attacker Mio Sison (Fr./Warren, MI), midfielder Perednia, and defender Jeff Ryan (Sr./Gillette, NJ) earned Honorable Mention.

Spring Season Wrap–UpBaseball

This was a great year for the baseball team, who showed the Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) that they were not a team to take lightly. The team is progressing tremendously under Coach John Rypel, moving up the ranks in the CCC. The Scots ended with a 7–9 conference record (fifth in the CCC) and made it to the semi-finals of the CCC Tournament.

In the conference opener against third-ranked Curry, the Scots scored three runs in the first inning highlighted by Geoffrey Brown’s (Jr./E. Moriches, NY) two-RBI single to center. Gordon took a 4–0 lead after scoring its last run of the game in the third when Brian Harrington (Jr./Shoreham, NY) drove home Jacob Syed (Fr./Niskayuna, NY) with a single to left. The Colonels cut the deficit to two (4–2) in the fourth after scoring a run on an error, followed by a sacrifice fly. The Scots were able to weather the late run by Curry to escape with a 4–3 victory. This was a very impressive win, but one of their most impressive games of the season came later in a game against Western New England.

On Senior Day, the Scots faced a very strong opponent in Western New England (finishing first in the CCC and 21st in the country). WNE took a one-run lead in the top of the third, but Gordon quickly responded taking the lead 2–1 in the bottom of the same inning. WNE tied the game at 2–2 in the fifth, and the score held through extra innings. Unfortunately, WNE was able to score in the tenth inning to escape with a victory. In a game that took three extra innings, the Gordon baseball team showed grit and fight to the very end. They gave it everything they had and were so close to finishing victorious. Although they lost, the Scots proved that they can compete with any team in the CCC, and some of the best teams in the country.

The Scots hosted the Seahawks of Salve Regina University in the quarterfinals of the CCC tournament. The Fighting Scots captured a 10–4 win over their guests to stay alive in postseason play. Ben Davidson (Jr./Sterling, MA) and Carlos Pichardo (Fr./La Romana, Dominican Republic) led the Scots' offensive effort with a pair of RBIs each, while Eric Wolak (Sr./Trumbull, CT) and Kris Camelio (Sr./Lexington, MA) also recorded one apiece. Ryan Reinsel (So./Hudson, OH) picked up the win on the mound for the Scots, allowing 10 hits and striking out six in 8.0 innings of work.

Gordon College Baseball landed three members of its 2011–12 squad on the All-CCC Team. First baseman Wolak was named to the All-CCC Second Team, while third baseman/pitcher Harrington and designated hitter James Burrell (Fr./Decatur, GA) earned spots on the Honorable Mention Team. The Scots also garnered the CCC Team Sportsmanship Award for their outstanding play and character on the field.

Spring Season Wrap–UpSoftball

The Women’s Softball team had an impressive season with four wins in the conference and nine wins overall. They had a lot of talent and displayed it throughout the year.

The Scots hosted the Leopards of Wentworth Institute in their first Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) doubleheader of the season. The Fighting Scots rallied in the bottom of the seventh of both games to capture 2–1 and 4–3 wins. In a game one pitching duel between Gordon's Claire Bennett (Sr./Mumford, NY) and Wentworth's Sam Burgner, neither team was able to break the score barrier through the first five innings of play. Wentworth struck first late in the game to take a 1–0 lead. But then, Kara Pepper (Fr./Wyckoff, NJ) doubled to drive in Bennett after which Rachel Ryder (Fr./Telford, PA) ripped the game-winning run on an RBI single to lift the Scots to the 2–1 victory.

Looking to avenge the game one loss, the Leopards led off game two with a single run on a Sam Curran (Fr./Quincy, MA) RBI for the early 1–0 lead. That lead held until the bottom of the second when Pepper RBI singled to plate Liz Cheesman (Sr./Winslow, ME). Shannon Dodds (So./Audubon, PA) later stole home to overtake the lead by one. Both teams fought back and forth until the bats suddenly went silent for the next three and a half innings. The Scots displayed late game heroics once again. In the bottom of the seventh Kerry McPartlan (Sr./Yonkers, NY) drilled an RBI double to center to drive in Bri Roberts (Fr./Center Conway, NH) from first for the game-winner.

Earning the game one win for the Scots was Bennett, who pitched seven innings with just three hits, one run and eight strikeouts. Pitcher Skylar Bareford (So./Stonington, CT) picked up her first win of the season in game two, allowing four hits and three runs with three strikeouts in a full seven innings of work. Leading the way at the plate for Gordon was Pepper with three hits and two RBI, while Cheesman posted four hits and one RBI, and Kendall Bukuras (So./North Falmouth, MA), Bennett, and Emily Borden (Sr./Groton, CT) each recorded three hits on the day. Ryder and McPartlan chipped in an RBI apiece.

Gordon's Borden, McPartlan and Pepper all achieved the honor of being placed on the 2012 All-CCC Softball Team. Borden was named to the All-CCC Second Team, while teammates McPartlan and Pepper earned spots on the Honorable Mention squad.

Spring Season Wrap–Up

Men’s Tennis

Facing many tough battles, Gordon played their hearts out in a season with many challenges.

The Scots notched their first tally in the win column of the 2011–12 season with a 6–3 victory over non-conference host Colby-Sawyer College in their first match of the season. Capturing the early momentum in the match were Gary Gaudio (Sr./Miller Place, NY) and Kenny Gaudio (So./Miller Place, NY) who battled to an 8–6 win at No. 1 doubles, while the No. 2 team of Dan Cormier (Sr./Ipswich, MA) and Sam Mason (Fr./Cumberland, ME) cruised to an 8–1 win to send the Scots into singles play with the 2-1 advantage. Both Gaudios then went on to pick up wins at No. 1 and No. 2, with G. Gaudio topping the Chargers' Jamie Thormann 6–2, 6–3 and K. Gaudio besting Justin Pinard 6–2, 7–5. Cormier and Mason also continued their winning ways in singles play, sealing the victory at Nos. 3 and 4 with 6–2, 6–3 and 6–3, 7–5 wins, respectively.

Brothers Gary and Kenny Gaudio have been named to the Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) Men's Tennis Honorable Mention Singles and Doubles Teams for their efforts in the Fighting Scots' 2012 campaign. Gary received CCC Honorable Mention in singles play after filling the No. 1 spot for the Scots this season and collecting impressive wins over Colby-Sawyer, Salem State (6–0, 3–6, 6–4), and Curry (6–4, 6–1). The honor marks his second consecutive year garnering All-Conference attention. Holding down the No. 2 singles spot, Kenny finished with an overall record of 12-6, 5-3 in the CCC en route to his first appearance on an All-CCC squad. The Gaudio brothers joined forces for the No. 1 seat in doubles play, earning Honorable Mention after picking up wins over Colby-Sawyer (8-6), Messiah (8-3), Western New England (9-8) and Curry (8-3).

The team received the CCC Team Sportsmanship Award for the sixth consecutive year for their outstanding play and character on the court.

Spring Season Wrap–UpWomen’s Track and Field

The Scots set more personal and school bests as they competed in the Commonwealth Coast Championship at home against some of the best athletes of New England.

Megan Wernig (Jr./Gilford, NH) had a record-breaking day by setting a new Gordon mark in the discus with an 88'8" result.

Dami Junaid (Sr./London, England) topped her competition in the 100m and 200m to earn the conference title in both events, posting personal best times of 13.15 and 26.47. Katie Hakanson-Stacy (Sr./East Longmeadow, MA), the Scots' most active runner on the day, also recorded personal bests in the grueling 3000m steeplechase (13:17.56), 100m high hurdles and 400m low hurdles while rounding out her outing with the 5000m run (22:30.08). Assistant Coach Brian Holahan said of her performance, "Katie, one of the women's team captains, led her team in a very self-sacrificing way today and exemplified that running is not an individual sport but a team effort." 

In the women's 1500, Kelcy Rich (Sr./Hudson, MA) showed strong from the outset, dueling with two other runners to earn a second place finish with a school record 5:08.91 finish. Similarly in the 800, Sam Goedeke (Sr./Villa Park, IL) led the Scots with a third place finish and a season-best time of 2:32.14, followed by Thais Ziegenhals (Jr./Essex, MA) in fourth with a 2:33.44 personal record.

Men’s Track and Field

The Men’s Track and Field team made a statement this year. They set many records for themselves, Gordon, and the conference.

The Scots took full advantage of their home grounds to set more personal and school bests as they competed against the conference's finest in the Commonwealth Coast Championship.

FIELD EVENTS: Schuyler Anderson (Jr./Melbourne, FL) once again led the effort for the Fighting Scots, winning the men's hammer (164'3") and taking second in the shotput and discus (129'). His hammer toss was enough to break his own career best by 7' and position him as the eighth-ranked hammer thrower in all of New England. Teammate Aaron Noga (Sr./New Boston, NH) also showed well for the Scots, taking top honors in the javelin and third overall with a new personal best in the hammer event.

TRACK EVENTS: On the oval, Joel Trunfio (Sr./S. Hamilton, MA) earned the CCC Champion title in the 110m high hurdles and 400m hurdles, besting a formidable field in the 400 with a personal record of 1:03.9, while teammate Kola Olateju (So./Portsmouth, NH) also took the CCC title in the 100m dash. The 1500 sported some of the day's best competition, as Andrew Kwiatkowski (Jr./Yorktown Heights, NY) led Gordon's effort, staying close behind a Roger Williams runner before making a move with 400m to go to overtake the lead. Though in the end he could not stave off the competition, he finished with a 4:24.15 and a respectable second place in the event. In the 5000m, after running one lap with Roger Williams, the Scots' Levi Miller (Sr./Coopersburg, PA) blew away the competition, outpacing his opponents en route to a 16.17.39 result.

Going up against New England's most competitive field of athletes, the Fighting Scots closed their 2012 campaign at the Division III New England Track & Field Championship hosted by MIT. In running events, Miller put on an impressive performance in the final race of his standout collegiate career, starting out strong with a 16:30 split at the 5k mark in the 10,000m and posting a 16:45 in the second 5k to pass several competitors and crush his personal record by 15 seconds with a final time of 33:15.79.

Josh Porizky (Jr./Groton, CT) First Team All-CCC for his outstanding performance throughout the year.

Levi Miller (Sr./Coopersburg, PA) was the Gordon Male Scholar-Athlete of the Year.

Women’s XC

Allison Lynch (Sr./Holliston, MA) CCC Runner of the Week and earned First Team All-CCC honors.

Katie Hakanson-Stacy (Sr./Hudson, MA) truly embodied what it means to be a student athlete and was honored as the Gordon Female Scholar-Athlete of the Year.

Field Hockey

Ashley Moulton (Sr./North Reading, MA), a forward, sported a 3.87 GPA as a double major in psychology and communication arts, which earned her a spot on the CCC All-Academic team three times as well as the NFHCA National Academic team.

Samantha Neverett (Sr./Athol, MA) earned First Team All-CCC honors.

Gayle Watson (Fr./Harare, Zimbabwe) and Melanie Landis (So./Quakertown, PA) received Second Team All-CCC honors.

Women’s Tennis

Kallie Garrett (Bend, OR) an All-CCC Women's Tennis Honorable Mention honoree.

The Scots garnered the CCC Team Sportsmanship Award, a distinction voted upon by all conference coaches on the basis of play and character in competition.

Men’s Soccer

Micah Linn (Sr./Germantown, TN) was selected as the Gordon Male Athlete of the Year. He anchored a back line that was ranked in the top 25 percent of NCAA Division III programs in shutout percentage (0.38) during the regular season. At the conclusion of the season, the senior standout was named the CCC Co-Defensive Player of the Year and a First Team All-CCC selection. Andrew Vandervoot (So./Memphis, TN) was named as the CCC Offensive Player of the Year and a First Team All-CCC selection.

Kristian Kasiguran (Jr./Oakwood Village, OH) was named the CCC Rookie of the Year and First Team All-CCC selection.

Blake Berkey (Sr./Akron, OH) CCC Senior Scholar-Athlete of the Year.

Individual RecognitionsWomen’s Soccer

Junior midfielder Karina Scavo (Mount Sinai, NY) has been honored by the New England Women’s Intercollegiate Soccer Association as a member of the All-New England Division III First Team. Scavo, the leading vote-getter for her position, is one of 11 players from around New England to garner First Team honors and one of four to represent the CCC. Scavo also made the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) All-New England Third Team. Scavo joins the ranks of many of the top players from all of Division III New England and is one of seven selected overall from the CCC. Scavo also was part of the ECAC DIII All-Star Team and was honored as the Gordon Female Athlete of the Year.

Caitlin Nedde (Jr./Colchester, VT) and Hala Coker (Sr./East Falmouth, MA) received Second Team All-CCC honors.

Women’s Volleyball

Gordon would like to recognize two seniors, Claudia Amado (Sr./ Glastonbury, CT) and Andrea Amado (Sr./Glastonbury, CT), for their dedication to the women’s volleyball team. Claudia Amado was honored as a CCC All-Conference Honorable Mention Player. Both women have sacrificed their time to truly embody what it means to be a student athlete.

Men’s Basketball

David Dempsey (Jr./Wallingford, CT) and Hans Miersma (Fr./Whitinsville, MA) were selected as a CCC Player of the Week during the season. Dempsey’s continued success throughout the season earned him First Team All-CCC honors. In addition to Dempsey's honor, the Scots were also recipients of the Team Sportsmanship Award, an honor they share with Wentworth Institute of Technology.

Dempsey was honored as a member of the 2012 All-CCC First Team for his standout efforts for the Scots this season. Dempsey was a major contributor on both ends of the floor all season long, pacing the Scots’ campaign as the team's leading scorer with 17.1 points per game and second-leading rebounder with 7.4 per game. He hit a benchmark in his career by breaking the 1,000-point barrier on the road at Nichols.

Women’s Basketball

Leanna Tallamy (Fr./Wantage, NJ) rounded out the 2011–12 campaign as the CCC's leading scorer (475) and rebounder (266), averaging 19.0 points and 10.6 rebounds per game while also leading the league in field-goal percentage (.484). On the national level, Tallamy ended the regular season ranked seventh among NCAA Division III freshmen in double-doubles (16) and finished 22nd overall in points per game and 37th in rebounds per game. Head Coach Julie Brown commented that “Leanna’s success comes from her willingness to work hard every day and every game. It’s also a reflection of our team’s commitment to get her the ball in certain situations. She would be the first to praise her teammates for their dedication to getting better every day.” After recording a record-breaking rookie season, she was named the CCC Rookie of the Year and named to the All-CCC First Team.

Individual RecognitionsBaseball

Gordon College Baseball landed three members of its 2011–12 squad on the All-CCC Team. Senior first baseman Eric Wolak (Sr./Trumbull, CT) was named to the All-CCC Second Team, while junior third baseman/pitcher Brian Harrington (Jr./Shoreham, NY) and designated hitter James Burrell (Fr./Decatur, GA) earned spots on the Honorable Mention Team.

The Scots also garnered the CCC Team Sportsmanship Award for their outstanding play and character on the field.

Softball

Gordon's Emily Borden (Sr./Groton, CT), Kerry McPartlan (Sr./Yonkers, NY) and Kara Pepper (Fr./Wyckoff, NJ) all achieved the honor of being placed on the 2012 All-CCC Softball Team. Student athletes from seven different institutions in the Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC)—including six Fighting Scots—were represented on the 2012 All-CCC Men’s Lacrosse Team. Voting for the All-CCC team and each of the major awards was conducted among CCC men’s lacrosse head coaches. Earning First Team honors were midfielder Wes Chittick (Sr./Glenside, PA) and long-stick midfielder Ian Knechtle (So./New Canaan, CT), while midfielder Adam Quinn (Sr./Gloucester, MA) was named to the Second Team and attacker Mio Sison (Fr./Warren, MI), midfielder Dan Perednia (Sr./Granby, CT) and defender Jeff Ryan (Sr./Gillette, NJ) earned Honorable Mention.

Kids ClubKids Club

Gordon College Kids Club kicked off the 2011-2012 year with the spooky but always fun Trunk or Treat event at Gordon College. Gordon students decorated the trunks of their cars as children from the community bounced from car to car to receive their candy.

Christmas came early for the kids this year. On December 2, Kids Club hosted a two-hour community event as part of the annual Christmas at Gordon festivities. The Bennett Center was filled with Christmas crafts, coloring pages, games, and dancing. Perhaps the best part of the night was the Christmas caroling led by Gordon students and Athletic Director Jon Tymann. The crowd caroled through campus, ending at the campus bell for the ceremonial lighting. The carolers gathered around cookies and hot chocolate, a horse-drawn sleigh and stories with the President and Mrs. Lindsay.

The spring included many Kids Club clinics hosted by Gordon’s athletic teams. Kids from the surrounding communities were invited to Gordon College for lacrosse, dance, baseball, and soccer clinics.

Kids Club hosted a fabulous community reading event on May 4. Authors Chris Crowe (Utah) and John H. Ritter (Hawaii) came to Gordon and lit up the eyes and imagination of kids and their families as they read their latest books. Packs of books were awarded to local school groups and classrooms to help support and encourage reading in the community.

Kids Club has started planning for the fall, with a variety of events for the community to take part in. Kids Club games, mazes, coloring pages and word scrambles can be found on the Kids Club webpage.

The PIT is BackBody paint, flags, stomping, cheering, support, energy, and school spirit.

What does all this mean? Yes, the PIT is back!

Just in time for the 2012 spring semester, the student-organized fan group known as the PIT returned to the stands and sidelines of Scots games. Under the direction of Highlander Club assistant and Kids Club director Mechelle Brown, Meghan Dodd ‘12, Kristian Kasiguran ‘15 and Cassie Larson ‘13 were able to propel the PIT to new levels this year. Official PIT t-shirts were created and distributed and PIT Twitter and Facebook accounts kept students up to date on games, athletes, and other PIT happenings.

Student athletes were excited to have the PIT back after a year of absence. The PIT roared at spring games. The PIT provided tremendous encouragement, inspiration and energy at the Women’s Lacrosse Commonwealth Coast Conference championship game.

This spring, the PIT partnered with Hippies for Hope (a non-profit group created and run by Gordon student Ashlie Busone ‘14) to make and distribute tie-dye shirts to children at Tufts Floating Children’s Hospital in Boston, MA. The partnership tie-dyed 150 shirts for children at the hospital and the shirts brought smiles to the faces to numerous children.

The PIT looks to bring smiles to more members of the community next season as well as they cheer on the Scots to victory in the 2012-2013 seasons.

Highlander ClubThe Highlander Club had a busy and exciting 2011-2012 season. The Homecoming Golf Tournament at the Beverly Golf and Tennis Club was a success with an excellent turnout. This year’s Homecoming Golf Tournament will be held on October 5, 2012 at The Meadow at Peabody Golf Course. Contact Highlander Club assistant Mechelle Brown (Mechelle.Brown@gordon.edu) or athletic director Jon Tymann (Jon.Tymann@gordon.edu) for more information. Gordon College Homecoming will follow the tournament on October 6, 2012.

On January 28, 2012, Gordon College hosted its annual Hall of Honor event to honor the outstanding achievements of former Gordon College and Barrington College athletes and coaches. The class of 2012 inductees included beloved Barrington men’s basketball coach and athletic director Jack Augustine (1962–1974), Scot softball standout Jaimee Smith Eldred ’95, and Gordon lacrosse ace Tim Chapman ’01. The weekend also hosted the alumni women’s and men’s basketball games. The games always draw crowds and provide a way for alumni to catch up with each other and revisit those great days as Scots.

The next Hall of Honor celebration is being scheduled for January, 2013. If you would like to nominate an outstanding athlete of Gordon College or Barrington College, visit the Gordon College athletics Hall of Honor webpage.

The Highlander Club also saw the addition of a new Development Gifts Officer for Athletics. Gordon College alumnus Robbie MacDonald ’04 joined the athletics team in February, 2012. With the help of Head Soccer Coach Johnny Whallon, they organized the First Annual Men’s Soccer Alumni Day. Alumni (from 1971–2011) and their families gathered on the quad for some great soccer, a wonderful barbeque and fabulous travels down memory lane.

Staff and Program Updates2011-2012 brought many staff changes to Gordon College Athletics.

Sadly, beloved Tennis Coach Whitey Davis retired after 14 successful seasons at the helm of the women’s tennis programs. Whitey also coached the men’s tennis team for many seasons. With the departure of Coach Davis and the support of President Lindsay, Peter Amadon has been brought on as the full-time tennis coach for the women’s and men’s programs.

After the conclusion of another successful season, Cross-Country Coach Andrew Shaw announced that he would be leaving Gordon College. The Shaw family will be welcoming their newest family member in 2012–13.

Gordon soccer said good-bye to Men’s Head Coach Jake DeClute and Erin DeClute (one of the women’s soccer assistant coaches) at the end of their 2011 campaigns. DeClute accepted an assistant coaching position with the Vancouver Whitecaps FC of Major League Soccer. Assistant Coach Johnny Whallon will be the head coach for the 2012–13 season.

Head Athletic Trainer Meg O'Brien had a vision for an Athletes in Action presence on Gordon's campus after she returned from a Brazil missions trip with the national AIA women’s volleyball team.

Pete Owens joined the Gordon Athletics team in 2011-12 as assistant men’s lacrosse coach and to oversee elements of spiritual growth and development through the Fellowship of Christian Athletes (FCA).
