Scootle Background and access

Intended audience

This manual is specifically for teachers who intend to use Scootle to discover and use The Le@rning Federation’s digital content.

Background

TLF digital content includes interactive multimedia learning objects and individual digitised items sourced from Australian and New Zealand cultural and scientific organisations.

Learning objects combine still and moving images, text, audio and animation to engage and motivate students and support their learning of concepts and skills in a range of curriculum areas in the P–12 years.

Digital resources include museum artefacts, artworks, archival documents, photographs, archival and contemporary moving images, maps, posters, songs and speeches. In contrast to learning objects, which have in-built learning design, teachers and students can use digital resources in a range of flexible ways to suit their own curriculum needs.

Scootle (http://www.scootle.edu.au) provides access to more than 6,000 items of digital curriculum content from TLF. Users can find interactive learning objects, images, audio files and movie clips via browse, search and filter technology. They can create personal lists of favourite resources for quick access.

Search results can be viewed on timelines and Google maps – providing new and exciting ways, not only to discover relevant resources, but also to construct challenging learning experiences for students. Teachers can also rate and comment on the value of individual learning objects or digital resources. TLF is hoping that collaborative understanding of the pedagogical value of digital content in authentic teaching and learning contexts will grow nationally with this Web 2.0 feature.

Access

Everyone in Australia and New Zealand can search and browse Scootle. Full access to the content is available to all teachers of licensed schools in Australia and New Zealand. Access to Scootle is not managed by TLF but by jurisdictions and various school bodies.

Overview Basic search

Search boxA search box is available at the top of every page of Scootle. With it, you can search the full repository of TLF learning objects and digital resources. Searched fields include the title, description, topic, keyword and catalogue entry ID fields.

You can search using

• a single keyword

• multiple keywords separated by spaces

• Boolean operators OR, AND, NOT

• an exact phrase inside double quotation marks.

Note that search returns are limited to displaying 500 results.

Basic search functionality is provided from every page of the Scootle website via a search box.

Page 12: Scootle UserGuide

12

Overview Advanced search

5. Learning area and strandYou can select a learning area using the ‘Learning area’ drop-down list. This can further be narrowed down using the ‘Strand’ drop-down list. This dynamically updates to reflect the strands from the learning area selected.Note that only one learning area and/or strand can be selected.

7. Search/Clear Search buttonsOnce filters have been selected, click ‘Search’ to search the repository. Click ‘Clear search’ to return to default search filters.

6. Publication dateYou may select content according to the time period in which it was published in the repository. (This should not be confused with resources that describe a certain time period or the original creation date of a digital resource.)

Dates may either be entered using the DD/MM/YYYY format, (eg 12/04/2006) or by using the calendar icon and selecting a date from the drop-down calendar.

(Note that most content has been published after November 2003, so selecting dates earlier than this will not provide useful results.)

1. Keyword and topicsEnter keyword(s) in the ‘Search for’ field beneath the tabs. Select a topic to search using the topic drop-down box. Note that only one topic or ‘All Topics’ can be selected.

2. MetadataThis section allows you to specify which metadata fields to search against. Note that multiple metadata fields may be selected.

3. Content typeThe ‘Content type’ selection tick boxes allow you to restrict your search to specific types of content. By default, the search covers all content types. If neither ‘Learning objects’ nor ‘Collections’ is selected, the year level section below collapses. This is because learning objects are designed for specific learning audiences.

4. Year levelThe ‘Year level’ section allows you to choose the audience of the resources based on Australian and NZ schooling year levels. Note that multiple year levels may be selected.

The Advanced search page presents a number of filters to perform a more specific search.

How to Browse content by topic

The ‘Browse by topic’ area of the home page allows you to browse learning content by topic.

Topics are structured using a controlled education vocabulary - Schools Online Thesaurus (ScOT)* and include Arts, Business and enterprise, Education, Health, History, Language, Mathematics, Science, Social science and Technology.

• For further information about ScOT visit: http://www1.curriculum.edu.au/scis/partnerships/scot.htm.

Step 1Choose a topic

Selecting a topic takes you to a page that shows all subtopics, including numbers of resources for each subtopic. In the above example, the Business and enterprise topic matches 2,368 pieces of learning content. Some of the subtopics visible are:

• Companies (25 items) • Customer service (10 items) • Economics (1,237 items) • Employment (88 items).

More subtopics appear further down the page and each of the subtopics is further divided into relevant keywords.

18

Overview Search results page

Refining the resultsAfter your results are generated, you may further refine your search in a number of ways. You can add extra keywords and choose a topic or subtopic for your searching using the ‘Search for’ field and drop-down list.

As you refine your search, the search box and topic drop-down change to reflect your current keywords and subtopics. At the same time, breadcrumbs (hierarchical topics) are generated.

Changing results viewThe results from searching or browsing always show three tabs that enable you to choose how you would like to display the results. Depending upon how the search results were generated, a different tab may be displayed by default, but all three display modes are always available.

Sort the resultsResults can be sorted according to relevance, title (alphabetically), published date or rating.

The results list also shows you how many items you have flagged to add to a learning path.

You can ‘Select all on page’ or ‘Deselect all on page’ to quickly add many items to a learning path.

Filter resultsThe filter section allows you to further refine your results by selecting a year level (useful mainly for

learning objects and collections) or a resource type.

A single year level range and multiple resource types may be selected.

Select the desired year level and/or resource type. Click ‘Filter’. A new set of search results is generated, which is

a subset of the original search results.

Filter by related topicsThe ‘Browse by topic’ section suggests a list of topics

that are related to the search results, with the number of related items displayed beside each topic.

Selecting a related topic restricts the results to items also related to that topic.

How to Change the search results view

Most search and browse results default to displaying the results as a list.

This view allows the results to be previewed, saved in learning paths, or the search further refined.

Option 1View as list

Choosing the ‘View on map’ tab displays search results on a map.

Select the icons to preview the underlying content. Note that not all learning content is tagged against a specific location, so this will display fewer results than the ‘View as list’ tab.

Option 2View on map

Choosing the ‘View on timeline’ tab for a set of search results will show those items on a scrollable timeline.

Select the icons to preview the content. Click and drag left or right to view more of the timeline. Note that not all learning content is tagged against a specific time, so this will display fewer results than the ‘View as list’ tab.

Option 3View on timeline

Learning area, year level, publication date and IDUnder the title is a single line displaying the learning area, year level, publication date and ID of the content. (Note that the learning area and year level information only appears for learning objects and collections.)

About Learning paths

Learning paths

You can save content items to keep them organised and support students in ‘Learning paths’. Each learning path has a unique identifier (called a PIN) that students can use to access the path. You can build many learning paths and use Scootle to keep them in one place or share with others.

A learning path includes a sequence of learning content, interwoven with teacher comments and descriptions, and delivered to students either online (by use of the student PIN) or offline (by use of an exported learning path spreadsheet or PDF).

Page 26: Scootle UserGuide

26

How to Build learning paths
