CEO’smessage

This year marks a significant milestone for our com-pany, Scomi Group in its journey of realising potential for all its stakeholders. A decade ago we celebrated the auspicious listing of our company on the Bursa

Malaysia (Malaysian Stock Exchange). We have since come a long way and throughout the decade, witnessed tremendous growth. From being an organisation with a market presence in three countries, we have today expanded our footprint to 26 countries. We are recognised as market leaders in our industries where our products and technologies are of global standards. Our brand is gaining increasing recognition as we deliver our products and services globally.

The journey thus far has not been without its challenges. We had to weather some of the most difficult times as the global economy took an unfavourable turn. This motivated us to re-strategise and re-align our operations, finding creative methods to improve efficiency and minimise cost, without compromising quality of our products and services in order to cope with the unstable economic environment.

Despite being put to the test, I am pleased to share that our continued efforts to grow our business while optimising costs

have yielded positive results. Scomi Group’s financial performance has continued to

improve over the past few quarters and we are also starting to see the benefits of the corporate restructuring exercise that was

completed in early 2013.

The Energy Services division has been driving our financial performance.

Since the start of 2013, our Oilfield Services teams have won new contracts in Australia, Malaysia and Turkmenistan, while our Marine Services unit scored wins in Malaysia and Thailand as well. For Transport Solutions, we excitedly anticipate our SUTRA monorail enhancing the

skyline of Mumbai as Phase 1 operations of the Mumbai

monorail is due to start soon. As we continue to

work on Phase 2 of the project, we are also

hopeful of the Chennai monorail project award announcement soon. Over in Brazil, our projects in Manaus and São Paulo are progressing well, achieving several significant milestones thus far.

All of the aforementioned achievements would not have been possible without the efforts and contributions of each and every one of you. All of you have been instrumental in delivering qual-ity products and services and hence building the brand of Scomi.

Aside from our business activities, we are also committed to playing an active role as a responsible corporate citizen. With this objective, we have initiated Group-wide corporate social respon-sibility (CSR) activities. All of our global locations are required to implement a CSR activity each and I am glad to have been reading about the various activities being carried out globally. It is certainly heartening to see the response from all of you, actively contribut-ing towards the betterment of your respective communities.

As we move past the mid-year point of our financial year, it is time for us to reflect and take account of where we are. We should continue to implement our strategies and should not be disheart-ened by disappointment or challenges and remain steadfastly focussed on our goals. What is critical now is to stay the course and to ensure effective execution of the projects we have in hand so that we can realise the returns. Let us continue to keep our eye on the ball.

After all is said and done, as I have always reiterated, do not forget to have FUN at work. Find opportunities to inject elements of FUN within your workspace. This could be as simple as having a meal together or organising an after-work activity. We are, after all, Team Scomi.

In closing, I would like to thank each and every one of you for your dedication and loyalty, without which Scomi would not be where it is now. The past decade has been challenging but at the same time rewarding. We look forward to many more years of success and achievements as the company forges ahead with your unwavering support and commitment. Here’s to the past 10 years, and I am looking forward to the next 10 exciting years ahead, together, as Team Scomi.

Warm regards,

Shah Hakim ZainGroup CEO

Warm greetings Team Scomi

case our latest solids control and drilling waste management technology at OTC 2013, held from 6 - 9 May. The strategic location of the booth along with the presence of three brand new pieces of kit certainly helped to garner a great deal of attention. This being the first time SEI exhibited at OTC, many existing and potential customers paid a visit to find out more about our equipment’s impressive capabilities. The SCM PrimaG 4 Panel Shale Shaker, hooked up to an SCM VFD Control Panel, captured the most inter-est amongst the visitors to

the booth. This particular shale shaker was kitted out with the brand new Power Deck Adjustable Module (PDAM), which allows the shaker deck angle to be adjusted from 0 to 6 degrees electronically using a switch. The SCM VFD Control Panel, with its Human Machine Interface (HMI) screen, was also commended on its practicality and ease of use. The third piece of equip-ment exhibited at the booth was an SCM 5500 Centrifuge, of which the bowl cover was opened to allow visitors the chance

to admire the sheer size and build quality of the steel bowl.

All in all, SEI’s participation in OTC 2013 proved to be

a success as it allowed enhanced exposure and awareness of our equipment and services

amongst the international and local participants at the

show. The numerous enquir-ies and follow up e-mails post

exhibition is an indication of the impact that SEI made at OTC. With that in mind, we look forward to the next OTC in 2014 where we intend to broaden our horizons as a leading solids control and drilling waste management service provider. ;

Not only were the office employees able to attend, but also several of our drilling waste management field personnel were able to participate in the training conference. The general feedback from all employees regarding their experience with PACE so far has been very positive here in Australia. Hav-ing said this, Azah was able to provide us with

an in-depth understanding of the system and many tips to ensure that we all are maxim-ising the benefit and effectiveness of the relatively new system. One of the main messages that everyone took away from the week was that ‘commu-nication is key’. If we communicate effectively with one and other through coaching ses-sions, performance management meetings and in our every day work, we will ensure that everyone is engaged and working towards achieving a common goal.

The four days consisted of some interesting role plays, challenging the skills which we had learnt and many enjoyable moments! Overall, the training conference was a tremendous success. The valuable skills and knowledge gained can only have a positive impact on the business unit going forward. The employees at Scomi Oiltools in Australia are looking forward to GLaD’s next visit! ;

CARNIVAL IN RIO DE JANEIRO IS KNOWN TO BE ONE OF THE WORLD’S BEST PARTIES AND IT IS EASY TO SEE WHY MOST PEOPLE WOULD CONSIDER THIS SO. WHICH OTHER COUNTRY IN THE WORLD WOULD CALL FOR A FIVE-DAY PUBLIC HOLIDAY JUST TO PARTY? NONE OTHER THAN BRAZIL.

Every year, the Carnival festivities kick off on a Friday afternoon in February with the traditional opening ceremony. The Mayor of

Rio de Janeiro will hand over the keys of the city to the reigning King of

the Carnival popularly known as Momo. This is symbolic of the city

being handed over to the revellers for Carnival. On Saturday, there will be street parties (locally referred to as bloco) held all over

Rio de Janeiro. The most popular bloco is the one held on Ipanema beach. It is typically hosted by a samba school, which will play sam-ba music all afternoon. The samba band will be on top of a moving

truck and the truck will travel through the Ipanema neighbourhood. Party-goers, are dressed up in brightly-coloured, shiny costumes.

On Saturday night, many attend evening parties and the most popular one is held at the prestigious 5-Star Copacabana Palace. Dubbed the ‘Magic Ball’, it is THE most glamorous party in Rio where the rich and famous can be seen. Attendees of this ball can expect to mingle with some of the most elite celebrities and public figures from all over the world.Sunday marks the beginning of Rio’s world famous ‘Samba School Parade’ held annually at a stadium built especially for this event, the Sambodrome. (or local inhabitants of Rio de Janeiro) take their samba VERY seriously. Each neighbourhood in Rio will have their own samba school and every year, they take up to 12 months to plan and prepare for this annual Samba School Parade.The Rio de Janeiro samba schools are similar to huge football clubs, in many respects. They have a flag, a colour-scheme and devoted (usually life-long) supporters. Every year, each school will have to come up with a theme for the Samba School Parade. They then have to compose a song, come up with costumes, choreography and floats. The whole neighbourhood participates in this and it is a very community-based event. There are about 13 samba schools in Rio de Janeiro and the Samba School Parade takes place over two nights (Sunday and Monday). The 13 schools will be divided into two groups and will compete either on Sunday or Monday. Each school has an hour to showcase their theme and these parades typically last for up to seven hours. The Samba Parade is a glorious competi-tion, judged by a panel of judges. The samba schools compete in ten categories: Percussion Band, Harmony, Flow and Spir-it, Theme of the Year, Overall Impression, Floats and Props, Costumes, Vanguard Group (opening act) and The Flag Carry-ing Couple (school leaders). The results of the judges will be counted and revealed on Wednesday, just after the Carnival. The winners (first to sixth place) will be invited to parade again in the ‘Champions Parade’, held the weekend

after the Carnival. By Tuesday, things will start to wind down, although there are still ongoing blocos, balls and parades (Children’s Samba School). Most offices in Brazil allow employees to come to work after lunch on Wednesday, to recover from the Carnival festivities.Carnival in Rio de Janeiro is not for those who are faint-hearted. It is definitely recommended for those who are young and young at heart, but one has to take all the necessary safety precautions, while at these crowded and somewhat haphazard events. As long as you are careful and in the right spirits (and company), you will be in for the experience of your life! ;

l e Meridien Hotel Kuala Lumpur (LMKL) recently announced on their Facebook page about this contest. When Janice Foo, Marketing & Communications

Manager of LMKL, encouraged me to participate in the inaugural LMKL Cuisine Explored Chal-lenge for their Facebook fans, she told me that “you just need to cook ONE dish, any dish you like… your favourite dish or your grandmother’s signature dish… just any one dish!”. Personally, I have never entered any cooking competitions and was quite hesitant to participate. What really prompted me to say “Yes” to the challenge was when she revealed that “oh, you get to cook in Prime’s kitchen!”. One dish, in Prime’s kitchen. I was sold. So I roped in my godsister, Jennifer Thomas (as each team had to comprise two people) and together, we signed up for the challenge.Closer to the actual date, it was revealed that we had to prepare not one, but a full three-course meal within three hours, for ten people. What made it even more difficult was the fact that we had to work with a budget of only RM500. Yes, we had to come up with a menu featuring an appe-tizer, main course and dessert! Despite the tough task ahead, we did not give up and decided to go through with the challenge. We worked together to quickly come up with a menu and a list of the ingredients which were submitted to LMKL for approval. To add to the pressure, the

participating teams would be judged by none other than LMKL’s executive chefs – Chef Antoine Rodriguez and Chef Zubir whose scores would account for 70% of the competition. Chef Zubir also happens to be one of the judges in Masterchef Malaysia! The other twist to the competition was that teams had to judge each other and scores would account for the remaining 30%.The competition’s format was that for four consecutive Saturdays, each team took turns to cook for the judges, other participating teams and the senior manage-ment of LMKL. The contestants them-selves are allowed to give 10 points towards presentation and taste of the three dishes created by their competitors. On our presentation, we decided to prepare food that we are familiar with, nothing too extravagant or elaborate, just simple, wholesome Asian food prepared with passion for guests and loved ones. To give it a little bit of excitement to each of the courses, we would add a little fusion twist to our dishes.So… our menu was:

Appetiser: Deep Fried Fish Cutlets served with tomato, charred pineapple salsa and dill pesto.Main: Chicken Pot Roast, served with saf-fron basmati rice and curried onions.Dessert:  Brownie Nutella Parcel, essen-tially brownies baked in filo pastry filled with homemade Nutella. It was a once in a lifetime experience working in a professional kitchen, using industrial stoves and grillers. Above all, we

had to ensure food is out on time, and is served in the most creative

and appetising manner. We had both top chefs breathing

down our necks, monitoring our every step and asking us questions. They were also very kind to give us

valuable ideas and advice throughout our preparation

period. At sharp 12.00 noon, we served

our entrée (appetiser) to the two chefs and waited for their comments be-fore proceeding to put the final touches to our main course followed by the dessert. When service ended, we were ushered off to LMKL’s other restaurant, Favola, for lunch as the other competitors and the two chefs evaluated our performance.For the three subsequent weekends, we

had the privilege to dine at Prime restau-rant, tasting what the other competitors prepared. At the finale, Chef Antoine and Chef Zubir announced that we won the inaugural LMKL Cuisine Explored Chal-lenge. We were both overcome with joy as the other contestants congratulated us on the achievement. At the end of it, I must say it was a dream come true to be able to have this wonder-ful experience and  I now have bragging rights to say that I have cooked in Prime’s kitchen! With this, I also get to strike off one more item on my “100 things I must do before I kick the bucket” list. ;

GrTC: Where it all Began…

W e were enrolled in Scomi’s infamous ‘Mud School’, an intensive Scomi training programme conducted at

its Global Research & Technology Centre in Shah Alam. We were joined by other engineers all eager to learn about drilling fluids along with other necessary skills and fundamentals as we began our career in the oil & gas workforce. The course spanned eight weeks, five of which were allocated for theory and laboratory work, while the remaining was for field and software training.We had the opportunity of working with other fresh engineers from various parts of the world like Thailand, Indonesia and Turk-menistan. Despite differences in terms

of language, we managed to work together and contrib-ute towards common goals during training sessions. Not only were we able to work to-gether on difficult technical-based tasks but we were also exposed to different cultures of the world. This expanded our horizons and improved our adaptability for future projects. Next, we travelled to Scomi’s

Kemaman Supply Base (KSB). Kemaman is

one of Malaysia’s hubs for oil & gas activities. KSB essentially has two sections, the warehouse and Liquid Mud Plant (LMP). The warehouse

is where Scomi organises its logistics while the LMP is where chemicals are mixed and stored prior to being shipped. We were given the oppor-tunity to mix bulk chemicals, trace chemical flow lines and conduct indus-trial lab testing. It was a real hands-on experience that put our theoretical knowledge into practice.Upon completion of the ‘Mud School’, we felt grateful to have been given a chance to participate and learn from our fellow peers. We are excited at the prospect of putting our acquired knowledge into practice as we look forward to contributing significantly to Scomi. ;

CEU – Paraisópolis, which is located at the edge of the favela

Scomi São paulo SpreadsJoy to the kids

T he community of Paraisópolis carries out many initiatives for the residents such as cater-ing courses for single mothers,

day school for the illiterate and extra-curricular activities for the children of the slum. Most of these initiatives are offered free to the residents and are sponsored by companies such as Bradesco and TIM. We identified this favela, not only because it is the second largest slum in São Paulo but also because our project, Line 17-Gold runs through this favela. In fact, the Gov-ernor, Mr. Geraldo Alckmin inaugurated the project on 30 July 2011 at the same location.

The Line 17–Gold alignment will integrate with Metro’s Line 1 (Blue), Line 4 (Yellow), and Line 5 (Lilac) as well as Line 9 (Emer-ald). It will also link with the Congonhas Airport, one of São Paulo’s airports located in the south zone of the city, used mainly for domestic flights. On 10 May 2013, 20 staff of Scomi, Quark and MPE visited CEU – Paraisópolis, which is a community centre for the residents, located at the edge of the favela. We were ushered into a theatre where Halan Moreira of Quark spoke about Line 17–Gold and how it will improve the connectivity and the daily lives of the residents. He thanked the residents for the

a fter introductions, we started the programme with a discus-sion on various important points required in teamwork

such as accurate communication, trans-parency, listening, cooperation, common goals, sharing of knowledge, rapport among team members, leadership, dedica-tion, team strengths, time management and many more.Dinesh explained that “a team is a group of people who are united to achieve a com-mon goal that is too large in scope to be achieved by a single individual. Without a common task or target there is no team”. An important phrase highlighted was “it is less ME and more WE”.

We also learned about the five fundamen-tals of teamwork:

BUildiNG TrUSTTo demonstrate that we had a ‘Trust Fall’ exercise where one member of the team falls backward having trust on his other

two teammates. This is a common exer-cise conducted to build trust amongst employees who work together.

Dinesh also shed light on Personality Profil-ing – the “4 Bird types”. • Peacocks being extroverts, people oriented, speakers, quick decision makers – “Promoters”• Doves being introverts, good listeners, sensitive and silent – “Stabilisers”• Eagles being extroverts, challenging, task-oriented, big picture – “Doers”• Owls being introverts, systematic, calcula-tive, trusting only facts – “Thinkers”

with proper planning and priorities, clarity in communication, deadlines, moving forward without hesitation and reaching an apparent understanding about decisions”. We then conducted an exercise on ‘Tower Building’. Each team had to build a tall tower strong enough to balance a candy bar. This was to demonstrate sharing of right information with the team, setting common goals, planning, precise allocation of job and time management. It was inter-esting to see creativity flourish within each team to construct an amazing structure.

EmBraCiNG aCCOUNTaBiliTY“Accountability is to ensure that poor performers improve when they are under pressure, take corrective actions when in tricky circumstances and acquire motiva-tional rewards”.

We had the opportunity to discuss ideas freely, appreciate our col-leagues, know their strengths, and areas of improvement. This helped us understand one another better in an effort to cultivate better working relationships.Dinesh concluded the training session with a noteworthy quote by Henry Ford:“Coming together is a Beginning, Keeping together is Progress, Working together is Success”

m-BOSET Experience for Scomi mTs

Fathers Celebrated at Scomi’s Headquarters

The latest batch of Scomi Management Trainees (MTs) successfully completed our M-BOSET (Malaysia Basic Offshore

Safety & Emergency Training) in June 2013 in preparation for our offshore placements. The training comprised both theory and practical sessions on how to react during emergency situ-ations including methods to escape a building that is on fire; ways to survive on the open ocean while waiting for rescue; and even techniques on how to escape from a helicopter crash.We also learnt about high profile case studies and discussed health, safety and environmental (HSE) trends for the oil and gas industry. The industry requires

that all its players maintain best HSE practices and over the years, the sector has experienced a decline in accident rates mainly because of the strong HSE focus globally and active participation to ensure proper practise of HSE at all times.In summary, the M-BOSET programme is a beneficial programme to impart nec-essary information and skills to workers on an oil rig. Everyone on the rig needs to be prepared at any one point in time to react during an emergency. As Mur-phy’s Law states: “Anything that can go wrong, will go wrong” so it is vital to be prepared. ;
