Context for Curriculum DesignCurriculum is Roadmap or Travel Plan to a destination.

• Travelers (students) take many Courses (roads/streets) to follow the map or travel plan. We are designing the map; the roads that will take our students to the destination.

• Travelers see and do and learn many things during the trip. We are designing the travel plan; the places, the activities, the things our students will engage as they travel the courses.

• Travelers reach their destination, thus complete their trip. The destination is where we want to go and what we want to do. The destination for our students is found in the Ascension Framework, its Implications and derivatives. We are designing the curriculum with the destination in mind; the new mind, new culture, new people we want to produce.

Context for Curriculum Design

Curriculum is different from Development plan (lesson plan).

• Curriculum is the map to be traveled, the development plan is the method of travel.

• Curriculum is the WHAT we want to build, development plans are the HOW we build what we want.

• We are designing the map that leads to the destination we want. We are not designing the methods and techniques that will actually transport our students along the road to the destination. That is a separate effort.

Curriculum Development Process

INDIVIDUALS

• Each person picks a primary subject/content area of focus.

– You may contribute to as many content areas as you like, but you must have one area where you commit to develop curriculum for grades K-12.

– Individuals with same primary areas automatically become a team.

• Each person gets a blank template to start with.

• Each person begins work individually.

– Fill in the curriculum tasks for each grade level – make progress every 2 weeks

– Use your knowledge and resources to help you define tasks

– Use supplied NJ State Curriculum Standards for subjects that require.

Curriculum Development Process

TEAM

• Have a team meeting ASAP to discuss how you want to work.

• Team meets every two weeks thereafter

– Use conference call service to meet and discuss issues

– Use e-mail to share ideas

• Each team submits their updated individual curriculum tools to SCMS Educators forum. Imam Kashif, Dr. Hameed, and Mubaashir Uqdah will merge the individual curriculum inputs into a master curriculum for the subject.

• Every month or two months, each team will review their subject’s master curriculum to remove redundancies, merge complimentary tasks, reorder tasks per grade level, etc.

• Continuous Progress on the status of Curriculum development for all subjects will be provided so that we can witness our rate of progress towards the goal.
