Scientific Method: Cell Theory -Spontaneous generationTask 1Look at the cartoon on the ISLE and watch the first 1.39 minutes of the video clip 3 Biology experiments that changed the world on the ISLE then answer the following questions: Who was Louis Pasteur? A French micro-biologist who discovered the principals of vaccination, microbial fermentation and pasteurization. What did people believe before his work with the swan-neck flask?Living things spontaneously come into existence. Why is his discovery important?

How did his work influence other scientists? Who were they and what did they discover? Can you name any practical applications that exist today due to Louis Pasteur? In 150 words or under, explain what the cell theory is (You can use labeled diagrams if you wish).Cell theory proves that living cells/ living things do not spontaneously come into existence, they have to come from some other living thing. All organisms are composed of similar, same unit or organization, which are cells.

Task 2How can we prove that his cell theory is correct? You have some sterile petri dishes containing nutrient agar and some new cotton swabs. Can you design an experiment to investigate the idea that cells come from pre-existing cells? (Use the criteria for the first section on the Writing a Science Report on the ISLE).Carry out the experiment, remember to label your petri dishes and leave for one week.Collect the data after one week and write up the investigation.(IMPORTANT SAFETY: wash hands before and after the experiment and ensure that each cotton swab is only used once . The petri dishes should be sealed with clear sticky tape.)
