“There is a single light of science, and to brighten it anywhere is to brighten it everywhere.” – Isaac Asimov
STEP 1
STEP 2
This is the introductory lesson in a unit created to teach the Scientific Method. In this lesson stu-dents will construct a booklet which they will utilize in the other six (6) lessons in the unit. Provide each student with a copy of the seven (7) page booklet kit. Each page in the kit has a number on the dotted line. Have the students take the page with the dotted line labeled “1” and fold it on the dotted line toward them, creat-ing a flap. Have the students take page “2” and fold this paper on the dotted line toward them. Instruct the students to continue this folding process with the other five (5) sheets of paper.
Once step one is completed, have the students assemble their booklets by sliding page 2 into page 1, then page 3 into page 2, page 4 into page 3 and so forth using all seven (7) pages. Once all of the papers have been nested within each other, have the students make sure the sides of the papers are lined up evenly and then make a hard crease across the top fold so all of the folds will be secured together.

Administer a post assessment to determine what new knowledge the students have gained.
POST LESSON ASSESMENT
STEP 3Have the students use a pencil to write the words, SCIENTIFIC METHOD, on the first flap of paper. Then instruct the students to write, on the underside of this first flap or on a sticky note, what the scientific method is and any other infor-mation which they consider interesting and/or important in understanding the scientific method in general. This information should be derived from classroom instruction and/or the students’ own research. Then have the students use a pencil to write the number “1” on the bottom left hand side of the second flap. Have the students write the number “2” on the bottom left hand side of the next flap down, “3” on the bottom left hand side of the following flap, “4” on the next flap, “5” on the flap after that, and “6” on the final flap. Make sure the students leave plenty of room for more information to be added to the flaps as they complete the other six lessons. Instruct the students to trace over the words, “Scientific Method,” and numbers 1 - 6 with a black fine point pen and then erase any remaining pencil markings.
