Neuroscientist, biological anthropologist, and author Dr. Helen Fisher is a leading expert on the biology of human personality and a pioneer in examining the neurochemistry of leadership and innovation. Her groundbreaking research in the field of business chemistry has helped determine how biological personality styles can be used to build teams and corporate boards, advertise, and succeed at work.

The Chief Scientific Advisor to Match.com and chemistry.com, Dr. Fisher collects data from her questionnaire, the Fisher Temperament Inventory, which has been taken by 14 million people worldwide. Looking at four styles of thinking and behaving, she reveals how to recognize and influence each personality and how individuals work, sell, innovate, follow, and lead.

“The more we come to understand the neuroscience of personality,” says Fisher, “the better we will be able to make rewarding partnerships, build better work teams, and create better relationships between men and women, teachers and students, parents and children, doctors and patients, and colleagues and clients.”

A valued consultant for Procter and Gamble and American Express, she helped VISA understand card usage data and Deloitte University create stronger customer services. Dr. Fisher addressed audiences at Fortune magazine, SXSW, The World Economic Forum, The Economist’s Ideas Economy, and was named a TED all star. She is the co-Founder and Chief Science Officer of NeuroColor, a business consulting and training firm, which will launch in 2015.

She has written five bestsellers on the brain science behind human social behavior. 2009’s Why Him? Why Her? explained how the brain’s chemical systems encourage people to find partners who complement their thinking and behavior, which has helped organizations enrich their operations. In 2016, her 1994 classic Anatomy of Love will be released in a second edition.

A Research Associate in the Department of Anthropology at Rutgers University, Fisher is a Senior Research Fellow at The Kinsey Institute, where she has also donated her papers. Dr. Fisher was a research associate at The American Museum of Natural History.

She has appeared on Dateline, Charlie Rose, 20/20, and Primetime Live. A documentary film based on her work, Sleepless in New York, premiered in April 2014. Her articles have appeared in New Scientist, Huffington Post, and Newsweek, where she examined the leadership styles of Presidential nominees.

Apostolos Pappas, Ph.D. started his professional career as a research biochemist in the Skin Research Center of Johnson & Johnson in ‘99 and later served as a group leader at Munich Biotech, where he worked on cancer research. Thereafter he returned to Johnson & Johnson, where he is currently a Research Manager and Fellow focusing on lipid metabolism research. Dr. Pappas is one of the first to culture cells that were previously not cultured; as human primary sebocytes and more recently human facial preadipocytes.

He has authored more than forty peer-reviewed scientific publications, patent applications, and four books. While at J&J he collaborated with many experts and KOLs to open a new field within the academic textbooks arena and curriculums on “Nutrition and Skin”, which was published by Springer in 2011. The success and wide recognition of this project paved the way for his second academic textbook by Springer in 2014: “Lipids and Skin Health”; which is the very first of its kind as well.

He has initiated and chaired three major symposia and has given more than 20 invited lectures at presti-gious societies and universities. Recently he became adjunct faculty at the Department of Food Science at Rutgers University (since September 2013) and a member of the Rutgers Center for Lipid Research. He has also been appointed as a member of the scientific advisory board of directors of the CARF Society.

Is non-edible non-applicable?The study of Trans-fats in

Skin Care Applications-Biochemistry, Biology and PhysicsNava Dayan Ph.D.: Moderator and Speaker;

Philip Wertz, Ph.D.: Speaker; and DeAnn Liska, Ph.D.: Speaker

The FDA is stating on its website that it took a “step to remove artificial trans-fat from the food supply. This step is expected to

reduce coronary heart disease and prevent thousands of fatal heart attacks every year”. In addition, deficiency in essential nutritional

fatty acids may be of equal magnitude for cause of disease.

It is often mistakenly thought that if compounds are edible they are also necessarily safe to be applied to skin and that digested beneficial nutrients are as valuable topically. However the skin

presents a very different environment when compared to the di-gestive system and functions as a semi-autonomic organ therefore exposure to skin should be viewed in relation to its characteristics and means of application. When this dogma is presented from a different angle; pointing towards non-healthy food being poten-

tially harmful to skin or healthy nutrients digestion contributing to skin health; is it valid?

This question will be discussed in this newly formed workshop fo-cusing on trans-fats in skin care applications and role of essential

fatty acids in skin health. Trans-fats are hydrogenated fatty acid that lost their double bond to become solidified and more stable to oxidation. Essential fatty acids are omega 3 and 6. The work-

shop will first define trans-fats and explore their use in food with a focus on some of the issues that have arisen. The workshop will further delve into compounds properties; skin interaction, health

aspects, bioavailability and biochemistry paths.

*AOCS Members will be able to register for this as well as the entire Annual Meeting at the member rate.

SCC members have a continual need to main-tain their current awareness of new materials, emerging technologies, innovative services, and state-of-the-art equipment in their pursuit of developing tomorrow’s cosmetic and OTC products. The Technology Showcase provides a forum for the chemists and scientists of suppliers and contract laboratories serving the personal care industry to present their most recent developments in a poster format. This Showcase combines the details of a scientific poster session with the pragmatic directness of a commercial exhibit (trade names, demon-stration prototypes, and supportive literature presented). This venue as a part of the Annual Scientific Meeting enables it to be an effective information medium for cosmetic scientists.

Participants are invited to present their infor-mation in a poster format (4’ x 8’) to include experimental data, graphs, illustrations/photos, and prototypes on the technical attributes of the featured product or technology. Complete trade names as well as the INCI nomenclature is requested for ingredients.

HOW COMPANIES CAN PARTICIPATECompanies wishing to participate are to submit an abstract of approximately 150-200 words of their intended presentation to the Committee on Scientific Affairs (COSA) on or before September 30, 2015. Abstract Cover Sheets can be obtained by contacting the SCC National Office via phone at 212-668-1500 or may be printed from our website www.scconline.org. The abstract and cover sheet should be emailed to [email protected]. Abstracts must be in a Word Document format only. Abstracts will be reviewed on a “first come-first served” basis as the Technology Showcase is limited to the number of posters allowed. There is a flat fee of $1,200.00 per poster. The fee does not include any Meeting Registrations per poster. Company representatives will be required to register for the Annual Meeting. Notification of acceptance will be made by October 30, 2015 and payment must be made in full by November 28, 2015.

*Entrance to the Technology Showcase is free but pre-registration will be required for anyone not registering for the Annual Meeting.
