MISSIONTo stimulate national interest, knowledge, and appreciation of science, engineering technology and life-style (skills) through hands-on activities, theatre, comedy, motivational talks, talk-shops and many more; to increase successful student access and entry to the STEMI (science, technology, engineering, mathematics and Innovation) career pipeline; and to demonstrate the importance of scientific discovery and engineering prowess to solving humankind’s grand challenges

OBJECTIVES• Ignite a passion and interest in accounting, economics, history, mathematics, science,

engineering and technology• Enhance the skills of learners in mathematics, science and technology in an innovative,

fun -filled way and the teaching skills of educators• Showcase and encourage innovation and creativity• Encourage learners in the junior secondary phase to consider selecting careers that will play

a major role in the development of the country and become part of the economy.• Learners in the senior secondary phase will understand what the country is expecting from

them and what to look for as they are preparing to enter tertiary education.• Make learners aware of the variety of careers and give learners insight into the nature and

applications of these disciplines• Foster awareness of career paths and entrepreneurial opportunities offered in different fields• Showcase role models, black role models in particular, who have achieved success in or

through different fields• Job Creation for local unemployed young people

SCIENCE - tuBE’s idea is to create an environment that can stimulate and amuse; a place to find out the nature and man - made world, Universe as by the eyes and understood by science, and to discover one self.

GET INVOLVED...

WHAT MAKES US UNIQUEThe kind of exhibition that we are offering is found to address the most challenges in teaching, learning and communicating science. We work back and forth between the creation of thoughts and the evaluation part. We work out ideas using previous experiences of the way that the community welcome and appreciate science in their daily lives.

• Interesting exhibits, enough to invite someone to stop and spend some time.• Visitor is able to understand what they should do to get the exhibition to “WORK”.• Visitor explore and discover things for themselve.• Allows visitors to interact in groups with experts.• Accurate and understandable content.• Accessible activity to people of varying ages and development.• Exhibition that a visitor can relate the content of the exhibit to something in visitor’s life.

HISTORY The month-long celebration of science and engineering, which culminated in a five day Exhibitions which took place in Thohoyandou Indoor Sport Centre and Town Hall (2010 & 2011) and Makhado Show Grounds (2012), were catalysed by the National Science Week (NSW 2010, 2011 and 2012) in Tshipise and the surrounding areas, Hydrogen Fuel Cell Public Awareness in almost all parts of Vhembe Municipal District, in collaboration with 50 plus of the nation’s leading science and engineering organizations.

Nearly 30 000 people participated in over 10 science and engineering inspired events in four Local Municipalities, generously supported by corporate, government, foundation and media sponsors

We work with Science Centers, Museums, Schools, Government Agencies, Universities, Research Organisations, Businesses and Individuals to stage events aimed at raising awareness and benefits as we reach as many youths as possible.

There is a direct correlation between a nation’s wealth and its well exposed youths to different career opportunities before they can enter tertiary education and also to maintain those that are already in the system. Awareness in the form of career exhibition like this one will help in the promotion of those careers which were not accessible by black people in the past such as Financial Engineering, Space Science, Veterinary.

PROJECT: IMPLEMENTATION STRATEGIES

1. SCIENCE SHOW DEMONSTRATION

Topic Target Group Type of Activities ObjectivesScience Show Learners, teachers,

media and publicDemo and Hands-on Communicating science of

learning in a fun and exciting way for learners to participate actively in science and other technology related careers.

2. YOUTH PROFESSIONAL PROFILES

Topic Target Group Type of Activities ObjectivesRole Model Learners, teachers,

media and publicTalk/Lectures andDiscussions

To motivate youths through other youths who have made it (professionals) in life in different fields. This will promote those youths who think they can’t make it by mere looking at their backgrounds and lack of resources among others.

3. CAREER WISE AND COUNSELLING

Topic Target Group Type of Activities ObjectivesCareer Wise Learners, teachers,

media and publicTalk/Lectures, Discussions and one-on-one approach

A well informed activity which will focus on different careers and have a good relationship with businesses, corporate world and institutions to gather all relevant information for our youths. Youths need to know what is it that the country and corporate world expect from them for the development of the economy of the country.

4. WORKSHOP AND STUDY SKILLS

Topic Target Group Type of Activities ObjectivesRole Model Learners, teachers,

media and publicTalk / Lectures, Discussions and one-on-one approach

Teachers Forum will be established in different parts of the country and last Saturday of every month they will be attending aworkshop in which professionals such as academics, and other people to share their ideas as far as different careers are concern. Trips for teachers to different companies will really inspire them to pass the right stuffs to their learners.

5. TALK SHOP AND SCIENCE CAFÉ

Topic Target Group Type of Activities ObjectivesDifferent Pressing Topics

Learners, teachers, media and public

Talk / Lectures, Discussions and one-on-one approach

To communicate in an informal setting wherein people from different fields (careers) and those that are not yet in the field to come together and discuss especially hot topics/issues happening in the countryand the role of different careers to solve them.

6. HANDS-ON EXHIBITS

Topic Target Group Type of Activities ObjectivesScience Exhibits

Learners, teachers, media and public

Hands-on InteractiveExhibits (Science Toys)

These exhibits are popularin almost all sciencefestivals across the country and they have attracted millions of South Africans. This is another way of communicating Science & Technology wherein people young and adults can touch and interact with.
