SCIENCE FEST Everything Science – With a Topping of Fun Walking into the quadrangle on the 16 th of April 2018, one would have been struck by the intense buzz of activity - the final touches to the big event of the day – Science Fest 2018!About 200 Students from over 13 schools participated in the day-long competitions and activities which included Codathon Junk Science Lexicon / Escape Room Paper Presentation Poetry Writing Quiz Shipwreck Taboo The chief guest for the inauguration was Dr G.K Suraishkumar, Professor, Department of Biotechnology, IIT Madras. Dr. Suraish Kumar addressed the students about the role and importance of science in today’s world. This was followed by the AK Samban Awardees for the year giving a brief but interesting description of their prize winning ideas. And then came the much awaited competition. As competitors and hopefuls filed into their respective rooms, tensions were palpable, each hoping to declare by the end of the day that their school had emerged champions. Yet, the winner takes all... and this year the Overall Trophy was lifted by Vidya Mandir. The Science department, students and volunteers had put a tremendous amount of hard work into making this day successful and their efforts paid off with participants going all out and enjoying themselves. Students could be seen trying to figure out what the mystery solutions they had been given were (Junk science), racing against time to decipher clues (Escape Room), putting their debating skills and scientific knowledge to test (Shipwreck) and giving free flow to their thoughts via the written word (Poetry writing). Participants of Paper Presentation were fortunate to have our former Principal Mrs. Shyamala Shekar, and former faculty members Mrs. Srividya R., Mrs. Radha S. and Mr. C.S. Ravishankar as judges. With their rich experience and thought provoking questions they aroused in the participants a desire for learning and exploration – to think beyond one’s textbooks. The fun fare finally concluded and it was time for the much anticipated Valedictory Function and prize distribution. These were presided over by the chief guest Mr Madhavan Mukund, Professor and Dean of Studies at CMI; Mrs Sheela Rajendra, Deputy Dean and Director & Correspondent-PSBB and the Heads of the various branches of the PSBB Group of Schools. Mr Madhavan spoke about the need for students to be encouraged to take up science and research as a career option. Mrs Sheela Rajendra urged the students to be curious and think out of the box. This was followed by the release of the Maths magazine ‘QED’, Science magazine ‘Resonance’, Tamil magazine ‘Yennangal’ and Commerce magazine ‘ComFest’ and prize distribution. It was truly a day charged with excitement, fun and learning!
