The School The Barnard Early Childhood Center is a three story stone structure nestled in a residential neighborhood of New Rochelle near the City’s border with Larchmont. Housed in this space are several district programs, including a four-year pre-kindergarten through grade two magnet program featuring the district’s first full-day kindergarten program, New York State/ Head-Start Pre-Kindergarten, the district’s Pre-School Speech Language Learning Center, and district Special Education classes. New York State recognized EC2 as a Sharing Success Program.

Theme EC2, a dynamic and challenging primary magnet program, offers a four-year sequence for youngsters from pre-kindergarten to second grade. It provides a project-based approach to learning adapted from the internationally recognized Reggio Emilia method of instruction with a strong emphasis on language development. The curriculum incorporates themes which integrate creative problem solving and higher order thinking skills while simultaneously addressing primary curriculum instruction in an aesthetically pleasing environment.

Philosophy The EC2 program places strong emphasis on language development for young children. The project-based curriculum, adapted from the Reggio Emilia approach, incorporates themes which integrate language development, creative problem solving, and higher order thinking skills, using an imaginative hands-on, minds-on approach. A rich arts program, which is an integral part of the curriculum, helps children explore, discover, invent, create and grow. Children have many opportunities to develop their multiple intelligences and competencies in all subject areas. The latest in technology is available to students, teachers and parents. The EC2 program features partnerships with community resources and local museums, small group instruction and portfolio assessment. The curriculum reflects the New York State Learning Standards and districtwide curriculum objectives.

How to Enroll Parents interested in applying for admission to the Barnard Early Childhood Center (EC2) may obtain an application at each of the Magnet Open House programs held in March. All applications should be delivered to the Magnet Office at City Hall by 5 PM, Friday, March 28, 2008. Available magnet spaces will be assigned by lottery, which will be held at City Hall on Thursday, April 10, 2008. Applicants are invited to the public drawing which is held in the Board of Education meeting room at City Hall. Parents should also register their kindergartner in their respective neighborhood school.

School The Columbus Elementary School is located in the West End of the City near the City’s border with Pelham. A new wing was added to the facility in 2001, creating space for a Discovery Room and Global Learning Center. A greenhouse and pond provide an outdoor learning lab with year-round projects incorporated into the curriculum.

Philosophy With emphasis on mathematics, science and the latest technology, the Columbus Elementary School provides a rigorous, innovative education that prepares students to think and solve problems rationally and creatively, to evaluate and use information, and to communicate effectively. Students are accepted in Kindergarten through Grade Five. The Columbus Elementary School is distinguished by the use of technology, including word processing, electronic mail, telecommunications, multimedia production, databases, and scanners, throughout student-centered projects. After-school and lunchtime enrichment programs for Science, Mathematics and Technology enhance the school's curriculum.

Philosophy The Magnet Overlay Program at the George M. Davis Jr. Elementary School provides an enriched instructional program emphasizing the performing arts. Students who live within the Davis school attendance area may attend programs offered from Kindergarten through Grade Five. The enrichment program offers every child opportunities to explore individual talents and potential. The performing arts theme infuses music, art, classic literature, drama and dance into the curriculum. Philosophy Jefferson Elementary School is a learning community on the move. School Trinity Elementary School, located in the southern portion of the City, was expanded with a new three-story classroom addition, and a new kindergarten wing.

Highlights Trinity School is a neighborhood magnet school of Communication Arts and Technology (CAT). The school offers four major instructional centers as part of educational programming: TV / Video Studio, Publishing/Media Arts Center, Computer Network/Internet Center, and an Arts Center. Trinity school also one of only a few schools in the nation given a federal grant to create a Children’s International Language Academy, which is called CILA@T. The program that began in September 2001 enrolls a limited number of kindergarten students proficient in English and students proficient in Spanish, and will add a grade level each subsequent year.

Philosophy At the Trinity Elementary School of Communication Arts and Technology, or TESCAT, students learn, hands-on, the process of producing television shows. They learn both the creative and technological elements while developing self-confidence and communication skills. Through Arts Excel, students work with an artist-in-residence to create projects like a model of the New Rochelle Community shaped from home-made paper. In the Publishing Center, students participate in an on-going publishing program. They learn all sides of the process as they interview, report, write, edit, run meetings and produce published products. The Computer Network affords a variety of media opportunities such as: creating PowerPoint presentations, researching current events, and producing cartoons. When children learn in meaningful ways, they become life-long learners, and they are prepared to meet the challenges of the future.

How to Enroll Entry into the Trinity magnet program is determined by residency within the Trinity attendance area. Families who reside within the Trinity Elementary School attendance area are welcome to register their children in kindergarten through grade five. Trinity families interested in the CILA@T program for their incoming kindergartener should have their child screened during the spring kindergarten registration week, and families whose children met benchmarks will be invited to apply to CILA@T. A lottery is held in the late spring for CILA@T spaces. Philosophy To accommodate the curriculum and more than 1,000 students, Albert Leonard Middle School is organized into three Houses. The House organization creates smaller learning communities that give children a more centered approach and opportunities for each individual to achieve their highest potential. Sixth and seventh grades are clustered according to each academic discipline, such as math, social studies, science, reading, and language. Instructors teach at the same time in a collaborative program which inspires flexibility and reduces redundancy. Seventh graders focus on a wide variety of foreign languages studies, including French, Spanish, Italian, and Latin.
