SUPERINTENDENT’S MESSAGEFrom the Desk of Dr. Chad CoffmanNext Year

I would like to thank the Lakota staff, parents, and students for all of their hard work and perseverance in completing the school year. The focus now becomes next year. The goal and the hope is to have the students back in the building and a return to some type of new normal. We received good news on May 21 that the building could be open for our fall athletes to begin training. The state is establishing mandates and guidelines for returning in the fall. Each district will take the mandates and guidelines, and work with the local health department to develop a back to school plan. As we have seen

with the pandemic, plans and situations are changed and modified over time. The plans we develop in June may very well be adjusted in the middle of August. I will do my best to keep our Lakota families informed and up to date with our plans for our return in the fall. I appreciate your patience. Finances

Unfortunately, the Lakota schools were cut $216,000 in state funding that we were sched-uled to receive by June 30, 2020. This loss, in addition to anticipated losses in revenue from income tax, property tax, and casino revenue, have required us to not replace a number of staffing positions for next year.

In response to the losses in revenue, I have

made the following staffing decisions for next year:• To not replace an intervention specialist

who resigned. This was also made possible through the graduation of students in the MH unit and the elimination of the unit.

• The MH unit also had a paraprofessional position. An elementary paraprofessional resigned and will not be replaced. A middle school paraprofessional also resigned and will not be replaced. The paraprofessional positions and responsibilities in the district have been adjusted for next year.

• Due to a reduction in enrollment, there is one less teaching position in the elementary building. The extra teacher will teach the

preschool program which we have paid North Point Educational Service Center to run for a number of years.

By not replacing the four positions, the district will save salary and benefits of ap-proximately $150,000 and purchased ser-vices (North Point preschool) of $100,000. We will continue to look for cost savings regarding any future resignations. Even with these savings, we are projecting to spend more than what we have in revenue next year.

I wish you and your families well. Enjoy the summer. Be healthy and be safe.

On May 31, 2020, the Senior Class of Lakota High School graduated. With the Corona Virus distancing, the staff at Lakota had to get creative with ideas to have the ceremony outside. OMEA DISTRICT II HONORS CHOIR

Lakota Music Department would like to congratulate Amilia Knisely, sophomore soprano, and McKayla Firsdon, sopho-more alto, on their amazing performance within the OMEA District II High School Honors Choir on February 22nd! This year was their first year auditioning and both were accepted.  They joined choral students from other neighbor-ing District II schools who auditioned and were accepted on their vocal talent demonstrated on the recording. Being a part of the ensemble required them to rehearse on their own, be present for two short group rehearsals, and perform with these local students under the direction of Jordan Saul, previous professor at Bald-win-Wallace Conservatory and current professor at The Ohio State University. It was an excellent performance and an inspiring event.

MIDDLE SCHOOL

LAKOTA MIDDLE SCHOOL THIRD QUARTER HONOR ROLL

From the desk ofMr. Patrick FlanaganLakota Middle School Principal

The 2019-2020 school year will be remembered for many years to come. Our sudden forced shutdown in March was the stone in the pond with ripples still being felt by many families today. The last three months have been very stressful for many of us but as a school community we vented, cried, and did what was needed to be done to ensure education was delivered to our students. The growing pains with distance learning provided many lessons that we will learn from and work towards ensuring we are prepared for what the fall may bring. There are many individuals that deserve special recognition as we conclude the year. The first being our families. Many of you balanced the educational needs of your children along with your own working from home responsibilities. Next, I would like to thank the teachers. When confronted with a challenge you can either rise to take it on or allow it to overwhelm you. The LMS teachers took on the shutdown head-on with the mindset of continuing to educate and tending to the well-being of their students. Finally, our paraprofessionals who helped with getting materials collected over the last few days of May and supporting the teachers and students in every way possible. Our hope is to see our students in the fall so we can begin and end the 2020-2021 academic year in the way many of us are missing now.

The LMS staff would like to send a special goodbye to the class of 2024 as they enter high school next year. Thank you, 8th graders, for your leadership and best wishes as you continue your educational journeys. Finally, we are excited to welcome the class of 2028 to Lakota Middle School this fall!

With the end of the 2019-2020 school year, Mrs. Terry Beck, Lakota Middle School’s Administrative Assistance will begin a well-deserved retirement. Mrs. Beck has served the Lakota Community since 1994, when the district was spread out among multiple buildings. The LMS staff wishes Mrs. Beck a happy retirement and thank you for all your years of service to our community.

Submitted by Levi HoerigEven though this year’s Youth Leadership of

Sandusky County program has been cut short by COVID-19, I have still been able to gain valuable knowledge. During the different meetings, we got to learn different things. During the first meeting we learned the importance of community, and why people need teamwork and communication. Through the second meeting, we learned the different educa-tional opportunities available to us. We learned about

Vanguard, transfer students from other countries, and how grades in high school can affect college. During our third and final meeting we learned how the justice system works for both adults and teens. This program has helped to enforce the ideas and morals that were taught to me by my parents.

Youth Leadership of Sandusky County Lakota Middle School is very honored to be in our second year of the

Youth Leadership of Sandusky County program with Levi Hoerig and Grace Harmon representing LMS proudly this past school year. We would like to congratulate Landon Blausey and Morgan Hamilton, our 2020-2021 YLSC representatives.

To find out more about Youth Leadership of Sandusky County please visit: https://leadershipsanduskycounty.org/

Submitted by Grace HarmonThrough Youth Leadership of Sandusky County, I

have gotten the chance to make many new friends and interact with people I would have never known. The classes we took helped me become more of a leader and to know what it takes to be a leader. Each class taught me new skills and showed me new things. This group has shown me the importance of community service and helping others. For anyone who would

like to be a part of Youth Leadership I would just recommend working hard, focus on school and grades, give back to your community, and show leadership skills towards others.

Youth Leadership has taught me to make smart choices, surround yourself with responsible people, give yourself the chance to meet new people, give back to your community, be responsible with your decisions, and finally how important it is to be a leader.

From the Desk of Mrs. Dana WardPrincipal At Lakota Elementary School

Dear Families,Happy Summer! What an ending to

the school year! I hope that never hap-pens again! I do want to thank all of our students, families, teachers, and staff for working so hard the past couple months. Getting thrown into virtual learning was a little tricky, but we managed to pull it off and many excelled! Give yourselves a pat on the back!

We have our Raider Reading Club, which is our summer reading program, starting soon and lasting throughout the summer. This is a great online program that will help your student read throughout the summer. If you would still like to partici-pate please email Mrs. Ridgely: [email protected] for more information.

Kindergarten Registration has been rescheduled for Wednesday, September 2 and Thursday, September 3, 2020 at Lakota Elementary School. All students

entering Kindergarten for the 2020-2021 school year MUST attend registration in order to be placed into a classroom. Should you have any questions regarding Kin-dergarten Registration, please feel free to contact me ([email protected]) or Mrs. Freeborn ([email protected]) via email or by calling the elementary at 419-986-6640.

Also, please note that the anticipated first day of school for Begindergarten and Kindergarten will be Tuesday, Sep-tember 8th. All other students in Grades 1-12 are anticipated to start Tuesday, September 1.

In closing, thank you once again for a fabulous year at Lakota! Enjoy your summer with your children and cherish every moment with them! Don’t forget to spend some time reading and doing some fun learning activities though also!

BEGINDERGARTEN NEWSThe Begindergarteners had a great year! Despite having to finish the year at home, we still

got to learn about the life cycle of chickens and virtually hatched eggs from my home. The students were so excited when they started hatching! We also learned about the life cycle of a butterfly and watched as caterpillars turned into butterflies, the first one coming out of its chrysalis on Mother’s Day. I want to send a big THANK YOU to all the parents for rocking the end of the year! Have a great summer break!

KINDERGARTEN NEWSIn February, the kindergarten students celebrated the 100th day of school where they trav-

eled to different stations and participated in fun activities based around the number 100. We also celebrated Valentine’s day by sharing valentine cards and treats with our friends. At the beginning of March, we celebrated Dr. Seuss’s birthday. Students went to different BK/K classrooms to hear Dr. Seuss stories and participate in activities based around those books. Then the craziness began. We would like to thank the kindergarten students and families for all of the time and effort you put into completing the at-home learning packets. Distance learning would not have been possible without all of the tremendous support from our kindergarten families. We would like to congratulate all of our kindergarten graduates. We weren’t able to have our graduation ceremony this year, but we did have a “Virtual Graduation”. A video was created that can be viewed on the school website as well as the Lakota Elementary Facebook page. Thank you for a great year! Have a wonderful summer and stay healthy & safe!

1st GRADE NEWSFirst grade students did a nice job of finishing the year with online learning. Despite the

challenges of learning from home, students continued to read Journeys stories using online links and worked on Go Math through Google Classroom and video lessons. Students also attended Zoom meetings with their classmates and teachers to stay in touch and participate in talent shows, show and tell and a summer birthday party. The first-grade teachers would like to thank all of the parents, guardians, grandparents, siblings and babysitters that made finishing the year possible. We miss our students very much and wish all of them a safe and healthy summer!

2nd GRADE NEWSWOW! What a crazy 4th quarter. We can all say we have lived through a pandemic, which

we have only ever been able to read about in history books. Learning was new to all of us, but we hope we all learned things from it. Please continue to read bigger books (Chapter books) and work on any math pages that were not completed in your Go Math books. You can continue to use your teachers’ weebly page and find fun learning things to do: read and do fun activities on Scholastic News, watch and learn with Mystery Doug videos, and so much more. Please continue to learn as much as you can to be ready for THIRD GRADE!

3rd GRADE NEWSThis year ended differently than in years past. Third grade utilized packets and Google

Classroom to complete the school year. We are proud of all the effort that our students and their families made. Reading and practicing math facts are a great way to keep skills ready for next year. We wish everyone a happy healthy summer and hope to see you in August.

4th GRADE NEWSThe fourth graders kept busy during our Covid-19 shutdown! Since mid-March, the fourth

graders completed distance learning activities on Google Classroom, in packets, and even in their workbooks. During this time, students in fourth grade participated in Zoom meetings with their teachers weekly, or as needed to help with certain skills. We know that the distance learning period was an interesting challenge for the students, the parents, and the teachers!

All of the fourth graders completed work in their vocabulary books during the distance learning time. They were able to read several very informative articles, all the while learning

new words. One article was about the United Nations, another was about a former first lady, Eleanor Roosevelt, and a third was about Pompeii. We hope that the non-fiction texts that the kids were exposed to piqued their interest about a certain topic such as geography, history, or science. We hope that this summer, the fourth grade students will be able to find a great book on one of these topics and learn something new!

We are sad that the last quarter of the year ended the way it did. We were very much looking forward to ending our year with AR parties, behavior parties, a visit from a guest speaker, a field trip, awards day, a spelling bee, and even field day! I think this time in our lives has taught us all to be thankful for what we have, and to try to make the most of our time together. All in all, the fourth grade teachers are very thankful for the time we DID have with this year’s class. Thank you for all of your efforts, boys and girls (and parents, too)! Best of luck in fifth grade!

ELEMENTARY SCHOOL

The Elementary PTO would like to thank everyone for their support and help this year! We had anoth-er successful year earning money to help purchase new playground equipment along with helping the teachers and stu-

dents with various activities throughout the year. We were able to buy a book vending machine to help supply students with books

in the Elementary. Unfortunately with the closing, the students were unable to try it out this year. With the generous donations from people in our community, we have purchased books for every grade level to be able to start it at the beginning of next school year! We also looked into purchasing ADA playground equipment which will hopefully go through this summer. Thank you again for everything you do to help our school! Next year, we will again be looking for people to help with differ-ent committees/events. If you are interested in helping, please contact us or sign up at Open House. We cannot do the things we do without the help and support of our wonderful parents! Have a wonderful summer!

PTO NEWSLETTERParents, Guardians, extended family and

students, I want to thank you for all you have done to keep music an important part of life. The photos, the creative instruments and artwork, the conversations and the packets have been an amazing! I am proud of each and every one of the students!

Fourth grade, I will miss making music with you! You have brought me so many years of joy in music. Mrs. Brower and Mrs. Geuy will enjoy making music with you! Students interested in Band will be screened in the Fall this year. Please go to the following link to learn about Band https://www.bepartofthemusic.org/group/index.php?id=2878 . This link will share instrument demonstrations and submit an interest form to Mrs. Brower. I will be turning over a booklet to Mrs. Brower and Mrs. Geuy containing the “Getting to Know You” sheets. When Lakota Music Ensemble is offered again, know that you can always come back and make music in the after-school program.

Third grade did an excellent job this year! We learned how to sing in parts, traveled to hear a live Symphony orchestra, and were just about to learn how to play an instrument called the “recorder”. Your recorders are safe and boxed in the music room. If you have taken your recorder home, please remember that you will need it for fourth grade. If you do not have a recorder in the Fall, you will have to purchase a new one.

Second grade did a super job this year! This is the year we learn even more notation, reading a melody from a staff and begin part singing. I can’t wait to see what you can create next year! We focused on learning about the instruments

LAKOTA ELEMENTARY MUSICof the orchestra through our study of “Peter and the Wolf ” by Sergei Prokofiev. The listening journals were wonderful that you completed. I look forward to making music again with you and dig in deeper about instruments and how they work in a symphony.

First Grade worked really hard and accom-plished many new music concepts this year. One thing we didn’t get to do was share with our family all of the songs and dances we learned throughout the year. We will strive to have that dance maybe in the Fall so keep dancing! Next year is a big leap where you as second grade students will learn more about rhythm and melody.

Kindergarten was a joy! We worked on keeping a steady beat, singing many songs, and playing instruments. You are ready for first grade music! I can’t wait until we learn how music is put together in rhythm and melody.

The Lakota Music Ensemble had a great year as well! We were able to sing the “National Anthem” at a basketball game. It is our hope to be a part of that on a regular basis! A huge thank you to the students who volunteered to stay after school to make music. It is with regret that we were not able to sing for the Fine Arts Festival. We also had members who planned to attend the Northwest Ohio Orff Music festival this year as well. It is our hope to be able to sing again and maybe sing for the Mud Hens next spring.

The year has had challenges but it is also had a lot of joy! I look forward to teaching next year with adding many new ways to teach music. Thank you for your support of your child’s music education.

Women’s Leadership Forum at Terra State Community College

In celebration of Women’s History Month, Terra State Community College sponsors an annual Women’s Leadership Forum. This year, Lakota women were featured guests. Lakota High School females initiated a Women’s Leadership Council, after participation in the 2019 forum. Information about the formation of the council and some of the group’s initiatives were shared with this year’s forum members, by Mrs. Nancy Slotterbeck, advisor. Twenty-three students and three advisors attended the 2020 forum.

From the Desk of Mr. Norm ElchertTreasurer

This year has been filled with so many events that will always be remembered. In the fall, my boys and I got to see Trevor Franks break the single game rushing record. In the Winter, the Jr. High wrestling team absolutely dominated every opponent they faced. I was able to coach my son’s basketball team and win the championship. That is something I will never forget as a father. I was looking forward to seeing more great things from all our students and then the COVID19 hit. It changed everything. I never knew how many noises this building makes when you are in it by yourself or with only a few other people. I realized my wife was never going to quit her regular Hygienist job to become a teacher, but I had to be counselor for her when I got home from work. My family did so much more together and became even closer. However, we also missed out on so much with not being able to attend school and play sports. My sons love their teachers and friends and even though they did zoom meetings and emailed their friends etc… it still was not the same. We did not get to see all the great things our students would have done in the spring. We were fortunate enough to see the April 20th event of lighting up the stadium to honor our wonderful SENIORS!!! A parade of cars with fire trucks leading the way – what a wonderful memory! Lastly, I was fortunate enough to see the graduation of our Class of 2020. It was a special event, and everyone did such an excellent job of preparing for it. Everyone in attendance adjusted so easily to how the process would work. At the end, seeing the long parade of cars with fire trucks and Highway State Patrol leading the way was just another fond memory I will have of a year that I never imagined. Our whole community from all our staff, students, and families rose up and met the challenges we faced from this pandemic. We showed how strong we are and again made me realize why I am proud to be a Raider grad, employee, parent, and a member of this great community!

We are facing some challenges with our budget in my most recent 5-year forecast. We were cut $216,000 from the state just in the last month. We have not been given any information on what our cuts will be next year, and we can only estimate how much our other revenue sources will affected by the shutdown of our economy. Dr. Coffman and I are cutting costs wherever possible to make sure we can get through these challenging times. I am hoping we can get back to school next year and hope-fully have more answers from the state on where things stand with potential budget cuts and what additional things we will need to purchase in order to meet the new requirements that will be coming. Thanks for your continued support and all that you do to make this such a great place to live!!!

NEWS FROM THE LAKHI CAFE

During the shutdown, the Cafe staff pro-vided almost 11,500 meals during the 11 weeks. Thank you for all your help to serve our community!

For those who are interested in continuing to receive meals, please check out our post on the school website and Facebook for more infor-mation. You can search “Ohio School Meal Distribution Map” for locations, or on the flyer, SAP4Kids, there is a resource locator. There is also information on the P-EBT program that is provided through Job and Family Services as a result of the school closure.

Please let me know if you have any questions by email, [email protected].

Have a safe summer!
