IntroductionArmitage Shanks has been manufacturing school washrooms for over 100 years, ensuring the very best standards are met for children, no matter the stage of their educational journey.

This brochure brings together all you need to create a modern school washroom. To ensure you specify the correct products the first section provides a complete selection of fixtures and fittings that comply to Annex 2A.

The next sections take you through a journey of washroom designs and advice for each educational stage. There’s even a section on teacher and staff toilets.

Finally the technical section brings all the products you are likely to need for each key stage and beyond listing images, codes and technical drawings.

Technical Annex 2A compliant productsIn November 2017 the government restructured the regulations on school washrooms. In particular this included Technical Annex 2A which covers requirements from early years through to secondary schools including teachers and staff. If your project is being funded by the Education and Schools Funding Agency (ESFA) then it will need to comply with the Annex.

The new Annex 2A sets out clear requirements for school washrooms. Within this section you will find the key products that meet the performance criteria specified.

32 Annex 2A Compliant Products

Contour 21 school troughsCritical for Technical Annex 2A are troughs or clusters of basins with fully concealed plumbing.

Troughs are required to have integral upstands for hygiene and reduced splashing and fully skirted panels to conceal pipework and plumbing while being readily accessible for servicing via tamper proof screws.

Annex 2A Compliant Products4 5

2 person wash trough 1000mmContour 21 School Troughs give an overall feeling of modern minimalism with a streamline shape and sleek functionality. The washing area has a dramatic angled gradient that drops down to a hidden waste.

Because the entire trough is made from the same material, the seams are fused together, making joins minimal and creating a natural, flowing appearance as though the trough was made in one piece.

All troughs are approved by Fira for load resistance and meet BS EN14296 2005 load resistance requirements.

The 2 person trough meets the specification and dimensions (1000x400mm) set out in Annex 2A. “Even and smooth surface, free from acute

3 person wash trough 1500mmFor those with additional space, choose the 1500mm 3 person wash trough.

Splashes are kept within the wash trough area, protecting the washroom environment. The hard-wearing, solid surface material is both fire retardant and UV stable, meaning it will not bleach or fade in sunlight.

It’s also possible to repair surface scratches as damages can be reworked and brought back to the original finish. The upstand works perfectly with wall mounted taps and soap dispensers, ensuring handwash facilities are kept within a tight space.

The 3 person trough meets the specification and dimensions (1500x400mm) set out in Annex 2A.

“Trough is supported off the wall for ease of cleaning” Annex 2A 4.3.1.1. e

Wastes can be accessed from the top of the trough so blockages can be quickly addressed without having to gain access from underneath or behind.

“ Non-concussive press taps shall be selected to avoid germ transfer. Where they are sensor-operated, they shall turn off automatically with less than one litre of use. ”

Taps need to be easy to use, durable and not waste water. Press taps can be adjusted to give a longer or shorter run time. Sensor taps only deliver water when you need it.

Easy to use push button taps automatically turn off after a few seconds, avoiding unnecessary water wastage.

Toilet pans & cisternsToilet pans and cisterns must be manufactured out of vitreous china as in BS 3402 or “in a material which can be demonstrated to work equally as well.”

Accessible toilets & washroomsCreating the right environment for accessible toilets is important within schools.

The annex gives the following guidelines which are incorporated within our range of DOC M packs.

• Visual contrast between sanitaryware, grab rails, wall finish, floor finish and alarm cord*.

• Toilet seat contrasting colour.

• Extended lever single mixer taps with spray outlet.

• Accessible cistern via tamper proof access plate. Avoids dirt and germ build up and potential for vandalism.

• Fittings should adopt guidance in BS 8300:2009+A1:2010.

Our confidence in the quality and reliability of our product allows us to offer outstanding extended guarantees on all our products – where the product fails within 5 years/lifetime we offer a free replacement or replacement part (or nearest equivalent). So when your washroom has been satisfactorily installed and is working well, please ensure you register your guarantee.

This guarantee is transferable – it applies to the product not the purchaser provided the guarantee registration is passed on to the new owner.

Liability is limited to individual products and the guarantee does not cover the consequential loss or damage or installation costs. This guarantee does not affect your statutory rights. Products must be installed, used and cared for in line with our fixing instructions and local water regulations, and room must be adequately ventilated.

Parts (eg. flushvalves) are guaranteed for five years and will be replaced if found to be faulty.

The guarantee does not cover general wear and tear.

Applies to UK and Republic of Ireland only.

You can register for guarantees on a bathroom bought on your behalf by a plumber or builder.
