School Visit Programs enable
students and teachers to
explore MoMA through guided
visits. Students are encour-
aged to explore contemporary
and modern works o art in
MoMAs collection and are
provided with opportunities
to engage with concepts and
ideas related to artworks and
to their personal experiences.
Through discussion-basedguided lessons MoMA educatorsencourage students to lookclosely at works o art and articu-late their ideas about them. Thisemphasis on analytical skillsprovides a vital support to artstudies and other areas o theschool curriculumrom obser-vation, analysis, and problemsolving in science to conversation,vocabulary building, and writingskills in language classes.
All lessons meet New York City Stan-dards for the Arts #3 and #4 as well asother national learning standards insocial studies and English language arts.Lessons also address Strands 2, 3, and4 of the New York City Department ofEducationsBlueprint for Teaching andLearning in the Arts.

Examine narrative, language, poetry, andsymbols in art or ocus on the interactionbetween literature, text, and art.
What Makes This Art?
Focus on a particular medium, explorean artists point o view, or examinehow an artist was innovative in his or hertime. Students may explore artistsdecisions, examine issues o artistic
intention and interpretation, and debateand challenge dierent denitions oart, among other topics.
Materials and Process
Focus on art mediums and processes.Students may discuss the eects oartistic processes and innovations andvariations in how they are practiced,among other topics.
Society and Politics in Art
Examine specic works o art in rela-tion to the social and political contextsin which they were created. Studentsare encouraged to refect on how artistsinterpret and represent dierent experi-
ences and events.
The Modern Lens:
Looking at Ar t from 1880 to Today
Explore continuities and changes ingenres such as portraiture, landscapepainting, and industrial design over time.Students may consider the impact oindividual artistic practices and examinesocial and historical contexts, amongother topics.
Identity in Art
Examine how art conveys identity bydiscussing symbolism, context, and stu-dents own perceptions o contemporaryculture. Students may ocus on individualand community identity, symbolism, per-sonal environments, and memoir, amongother topics.
Modern Spaces

Timing

Getting There
School groups check in at The Lewis B.and Dorothy Cullman Education andResearch Building, at 4 West 54th Street(near Fith Avenue).
Group Size
For guided museum visits, classes oeighteen to thirty students will be splitinto two smaller groups at the Museum.We recommend you divide your classesin advance o the visit. For multipartprograms, in-school previsit and post-visit classes will not be divided intosmaller groups.
Staying in the Museum
Groups may stay in the Museum atertheir designated tour times any week-day except Tuesday, when the Museumis closed to the public. Students stayingater their tour time are the responsibil-ity o their teachers and chaperones andmust abide by all rules or sel-guidedgroups.
What to Bring
Students belongings will be checkedupon arrival. Students should avoidbringing any valuable items with themto the Museum. MoMA educators willprovide all necessary lesson supplies.
Lunch Facilities
The Museum does not have lunchroomacilities or students. There are vari-ous public spaces in the Midtown areawhere students can have lunch. For a listo these spaces, please see MoMA.org/docs/learn/publiclunch_moma.pd.
