    Parents' evening

1 You accompany your Spanish friend, Alejandro, and his parents to a parents'evening. What aspects of Alejandro's work is the teacher pleased with?

Listen to the recording and put a cross [x] in each one of the three correct boxes.

You won't always hear the exact phrase that you read in the options so, when youlisten, be prepared to pick out statements that mean the same thing. The words'general progress', as in the example, are not used in the recording but you will hearex/to (success) and n'mgunos problemas (no problems), indicating that his generalprogress is fine.

    Role play: talking about school

Prepare your answers using the prompts. Then listen to the recording of the teacher'spart and answer in the pauses. If you need more time, simply pause the recording. An example of a complete role play is recorded in the answer section.

    Impressions of a British school

2 Read this article from a Spanish school magazine about a student's impressionsof a British school.

You can sometimes use your cultural knowledge to work out an answer. For question (d),you will find in the text that at 9 o'clock they go to a classroom para que e( profe pase lalista. You can connect lista to the English word 'list', and from your own experience youknow that first thing in the morning the teacher takes the register, which is a sort of list.

With challenging reading passages, it helps to have a broad vocabulary in Englishtoo. The words amplio and amplias in the text can both be linked to the English word'ample', which means 'good sized' and implies plenty of space. Knowing this can helpyou to answer two of the questions.

In the translation text below there are several adjectives.Your writing in Spanish will be much more accurate ifyou learn the rules about making adjectives agree.
