A WORD FROM OUR PASTOR It was lunch time over at school and so I stopped in Langan Hall to visit with our students as they eagerly devoured their noon-time nourishment. I asked the kids at one table what they were having for lunch, and they declared with joy, ''Pancakes and sausage!'' So I made a theo-logical observation. I said, ''See how great Catholic schools are? We can do miracles. We have transformed the meal of breakfast into lunch!'' Actually, this is a regular miracle here at Divine Infant Jesus School. The pancakes and sausage lunch are part of the regular menu rotation for the Archdiocesan food service, but this is only the tiniest of miracles that occur at our school. At Divine Infant Jesus School, miracles happen on a daily basis.

All I have to do is to look at our students and I am confronted with the miraculous. The first miracle I see is that of the Christian community. Our kids come from all over the area and from many different ethnic, racial, and economic backgrounds, but together we form the Church which, as St. Paul tells us, is the Body of Christ made of many different members. Our school kids form a community that is the diverse and beautiful Body of Christ. I also see the miracle of learning. It is wonderful to see little minds absorb knowledge and grow in ability. The human mind is an amazing creation, and it is a privilege to see these young minds in action. From learning comes the miracle of growth. Those years from kindergarten to eighth grade are dog years. Our students make such tremendous strides in just a few short years. They go from being little darlings who can barely tie their shoes to young men and woman ready to move on to high school. Of course, this growth is evidence of the miracle of life. All life comes from God and is meant to grow and thrive, and our school brims with this life. All of this reveals to me the greatest miracle that I see in our school -- the miracle of faith. When I ask people to define faith, most people do not define it but rather describe it by its various qualities. They say that it is hope or belief or trust. Those are aspects of faith, but they are not the definition. Rather, faith is the code word for our relationship with God. We describe all our relationships by code words -- hus-band, wife, mother, father, son, daughter, friend, boss, etc. We do not have to explain the relationship. We simply use the word and others understand it. The same is true of faith. When I say I have faith, I mean that I have a relationship with God. It is this miraculous relationship that I see in our school. Our students come to know and love God in our school. Within our school community and through all their learning, growing, and living, our students discover their relationship with God. This Sunday begins our annual observance of Catholic Schools Week. It is a week of recognition and cele-bration for our faculty, staff and students and for the entire parish as well. This week we are all invited to look at the gift of our school and to treasure the miracles it reveals. Catholic school is not cheap. Our school parents pay serious tuition dollars and our parish supports the school significantly, but the miracles that come from our school are priceless. The learning and growing and faith in our school are treasures that last a life time. During Catholic Schools Week, we celebrate the treasure of Catholic schools and our own school in particular. It is truly a miracle, even on the days when we do not serve pancakes and sausage for lunch. Fr. Michael

BEST LENT EVER! Matthew Kelly, founder of Dynamic-

Catholic.com has written a new book enti-tled Rediscover Jesus. A number of parishioners have had the opportunity to read this book and are excited about how it has enriched their faith. Father Michael heard of their experiences and purchased 500 copies of the book for Divine Infant parishion-ers. The book is made up of forty chapters – the perfect number for the season of Lent which starts on February 10. If you commit to reading one chap-ter a day, you will finish a great religious book before Easter. The book will be available at no cost as you leave Mass the weekend of February 7 until they run out. There will be a donation basket for anyone who wants to help the parish with the cost.

Besides this news, Dynamic Catholic has also decided to use the book to take those who join them online on a 40-day spiritual journey to encoun-ter Jesus – and yourself – in a deeply personal way. If you choose to sign up online, you will re-ceive an inspirational email with a short video featur-ing Matthew and a member of the Dynamic Catholic Team. Throughout Lent, they will guide you through each of the 40 chapters in Rediscover Jesus and share simple ways to bring Jesus into your everyday life. You can sign up at DynamicCatholic.com/Lent.

Whether you sign up for the Dynamic Catho-lic program or decide to read it on your own, please take a book home next weekend and read it – alone or with your family – one chapter a day for the forty days – and make this YOUR BEST LENT EVER!

JUSTICE AND PEACE What the world needs now (and always) is Jus-tice and Peace. How are these topics treated in the Bible? There will be a six session Scripture Study on this topic on Thursday evenings during Lent, beginning February 11th. We will use the Study Set from the Little Rock Scripture Study. Sessions will be on Thursday evenings in the rectory, 7:00-8:30 pm. This study will help us to reflect on God’s call to holi-ness and our response, the requirements of disciple-ship, and the lasting rewards of following the way of justice and peace. The study examines the teaching and ministry of Jesus as well as the call, life and message of several Old Testament prophets. In-volvement in this study will provide deep insights into the consistent concern for justice in the Bible as well as stirring one’s conscience as it provides op-portunities to explore how we and our communities of faith respond to the needs of others. The cost of the materials will be $7.00. You can call the rectory to sign up. We will contact you when the materials are available.

MUSIC GROUPS ACCEPTING NEW MEMBERS

The DI Adult Choir opens up for newcomers at the beginning of each of the choir seasons. Cur-rently, the Adult Choir is ready to begin the Lent/Easter season so newcomers are welcome to join us at our rehearsal on Wednesday, February 3, from 7:15 PM until 9:15 PM in the music area of the church. The only requirements to join this group are a blendable singing voice as well as the time and dedication to devote to regular weekly rehearsals and liturgies. A complete schedule of events for the season will be distributed at that rehearsal. The DI Cantors never take a break as a group. They rehearse and lead us in song year-round. We usually accept new membership to this group during the summer. The DI Resurrection Choir sings year-round at funerals. The only requirements to join this group are a blendable singing voice and availability for fu-nerals Monday through Saturday usually at 10am when there is a funeral. If you are interested in this ministry, please contact Judy Schindler, our organ-ist, who coordinates this ministry. For further information about any of our music groups, please contact Janet Reif at [email protected] or call the rectory and leave a message for her to contact you.

Catholic schools are neighborhood schools full of the kids you want your child to be with and learn from. The students are not just classmates, they are truly family. The older students look after the younger students by mentoring and helping them in whatever way they are able. The teachers are very in touch with the needs of children. They are also good at communicating with parents and involving them in their children’s education. The teachers truly love the children and are always looking for new ways to enhance their education and allow them to grow up, both spiritually and mentally, to be respect-able, well-rounded adults.

Grade 2 is having some indoor winter fun making Snow Globes this year!

Thinking of winter, First Grade is work-ing on a mitten project. We read the book, The Mitten, by Jan Brett. We made an art project with mittens that used the math concepts or symmetry and counting by 2’s. We also wrote sto-ries about our mittens.

WHAT IS NATIONAL CATHOLIC SCHOOLS WEEK?

National Catholic Schools Week is the annual celebration of Catholic education in the United States. It starts the last Sunday in January and runs all week, which in 2016 is January 31 - February 6. The theme for the National Catholic Schools Week 2016 is “Catholic Schools: Communities of Faith, Knowledge and Service.” Schools typically observe the annual celebration week with Masses, open houses and other activities for students, families, parishioners and community members. Through these events, schools focus on the value Catholic education provides to young people and its contribu-tions to our church, our communities and our nation.

SUCCESSFUL BLOOD DRIVE On Saturday, Jan. 23, more than 100 generous people from across the western suburbs became united in one goal: Save lives in area hospitals by donating blood. By the end of the day, the Westchester Blood Program had collected 108 units. There were 92 units of whole blood and 16 units of red cells. These are just two parts of what are the building blocks of human blood. The drive was the kickoff event for a year of three more drives. The next will be on April 16 at the Community Center. The Jan 23 drive was successful not just because of the 108 units. Also important was the fact that 13 of the participants were first-time donors. The or-ganization is always looking for new blood. The WBP extends its deep thanks to all of the members of the Divine Infant Family, whether they were donors, volunteers or Program officers. The WBP dedicated the drive to the memory of Nadine Trumbull, who was one of the founders of the organization in June 1974. She remained a member of its planning board until just recently, as her health began to fail. Ironically, Jan. 23 would have been her 91st birthday. She will never be forgotten by the many WBP vol-unteers but also by many other Westchester friends she made during a very active life. Her energy and upbeat personality can never be replaced. The organization recently passed the 25,000-unit plateau since its founding. That's more than enough to care for 100,000 hospital patients. Anyone with a question about the importance of donating blood can contact Chairman Carl Panek at 708-606-4548.
