SEVENTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME February 20, 2011 Be holy, for I, the LORD, your God, am holy. — Leviticus 19:2b "But I tell you who hear me: Love your enemies, do good to those who hate you, bless those who curse you, pray for those who mistreat you. If someone strikes you on one cheek, turn to him the other also. If someone takes your cloak, do not stop him from taking your tunic. Give to everyone who asks you, and if anyone takes what belongs to you, do not demand it back. Do to others as you would have them do to you. "If you love those who love you, what credit is that to you? Even 'sinners' love those who love them. And if you do good to those who are good to you, what credit is that to you? Even 'sinners' do that. And if you lend to those from whom you expect repayment, what credit is that to you? Even 'sinners' lend to 'sinners,' expecting to be repaid in full. But love your enemies, do good to them, and lend to them without expecting to get any- thing back. Then your reward will be great, and you will be sons of the Most High, because he is kind to the ungrateful and wicked. Be merciful, just as your Father is merciful. Luke 6:27-36

SEVENTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME February 20, 2011

Be holy, for I, the LORD, your God, am holy.

— Leviticus 19:2b

"But I tell you who hear me: Love your enemies, do good to those who hate you, bless those who curse you, pray for those who mistreat you.

But love your enemies, do good to them, and lend to them without expecting to get any-thing back. Then your reward will be great, and you will be sons of the Most High, because he is kind to the ungrateful and wicked. Be merciful, just as your Father is merciful.

A WORD FROM OUR PASTOR

Hopefully, by now all of you have received your parish financial report and year-end contri-bution letter in the mail. We took those letters to the Post Office on the morning of February 1st because we wanted to beat the blizzard. The Post Office still managed to lose them for over a week, but now they seem to be arriving. If you still have not received your statement, give a call to the rectory office and we will send you a new one. Of course, none of this would have happened if we did not have to use the United States Postal Service. Then again, we do not, as a matter of fact, have to use them. In order to save parish money and to be a bit greener, we would invite you to consider receiving all parish

mailings electronically through email. If you would like to receive your parish mailings via email, simply send us an email at [email protected]. In the subject line write "parish email," and then in the body of the email please include your name, street address, and envelope number if you have it handy. This will help save the parish money in printing and postage and hopefully limit some of the clutter in your own life. Speaking of money, that is what I have to do at all the masses this weekend. To be more precise, I have to preach about the Annual Catholic Appeal. The Annual Catholic Appeal is the one major fund raiser for our local church. Your gift to the Appeal supports Catholic education and the training of lay ministers and dea-cons. It helps the poor, the sick and the unborn. It is the major source of funding for so many of the ministries of our Archdiocese. But it is also a tremendous opportunity for you to support Divine Infant. Every parish is given a goal based on its annual Sunday collection. When that goal is reached, every cent beyond the goal is rebated to the parish. That means that your generosity in the Appeal not only helps the many ministries of the Archdiocese, but it also helps us directly. In our deanery, which includes the parishes from Westchester to Western Springs and from Riverside to LaGrange, Divine Infant has consistently been in the top two parishes for pledges to the Appeal. I will not name any names, but some of those parishes in our deanery are much bigger and wealthier than we are, but we still beat them! This means that you are some of the most generous people in our area. At deanery meet-ings when the Appeal figures are analyzed and discussed, I am always extremely proud of our parish. We beat the rich guys! We beat the rich guys! But it is not just about beating the rich guys. It is about doing the work of Jesus Christ, and that is what the Appeal is all about. Moreover, your generosity to the Appeal allows us to minister to ourselves. There are plenty of ways we can use the rebate from the Appeal. One thought that has crossed my mind -- and, no doubt, your ears -- is that we could use a new sound system in church. If we are able to get a large enough rebate, we may just be able to improve our church sound system. So please be generous in the Appeal. Your gift will help so many people in our Archdiocese who are in need, and it will help us too. And if you want to brag a bit about beating the rich guys, I certainly won't stop you! Fr. Michael

LITURGICALLY RECYCLE YOUR OLD PALMS!

The ashes used on Ash Wednesday are obtained by burning the blessed palms from the previous Palm Sunday. On March 8th, the Tuesday before Ash Wednesday, the students of Divine Infant Jesus School will burn old palms to make ashes for Ash Wednesday. We invite you to bring your old palms to church so that they can be burned to make ashes. Please leave the palms in the collection containers in the vestibule of church, and then join us for the burning of the palms on Tuesday March 8th at 2pm in the courtyard of church.

ATTENTION EXTRAORDINARY MINISTERS OF HOLY COMMUNION AT MASS

Every three years, Extraordinary Ministers of Holy Communion must be re-commissioned. Recently, all Extraordinary Ministers were asked to indicate their desire to continue their ministry. All Extraordinary Ministers of Communion at Mass will be re-commissioned the weekend of 05-06 March. At all the Masses, Extraordinary Ministers will be invited up to the altar after the homily to be re-commissioned. If you are an Extraordinary Minister of Holy Com-munion, you are invited to participate in the Re-commissioning Rite celebrated at the Mass you at-tend on the weekend of 05-06 March.

Pre-Kindergarten students Lexi Piemonte and Matthew Mathey prepare for their Valentine’s Day party by painting mailboxes (tissue boxes) for the Valentines they will bring for their classmates.

Shown are Gillian Grimes, Joey Calabrese, and Mary Ann Lah observing the hands-on activity of how plants take in water. They were able to see the colored water travel through the stem of the carnation up to the petals. They saw how the pet-als changed from white to blue and red.

Alexa Zornoza is pictured with “Buddy” who will go home with her and she will journal what they do together over the weekend. Each student will have a turn at taking “Buddy” home with them. Second graders are very excited to be the first to do this adventure!

We the People … Seventh grader students are studying the U.S. Constitution in Social Studies. Pictured here are David Prignano, Brandon Castillo, Aja Collins, and Maeve Grimes as they work to rewrite the Pream-ble in their own words. If our Founding Fathers only knew!

As we begin the Season of Lent, we take time to consider the traditional practices of Lent—fasting almsgiving and prayer. However, this is not a time to just do the same things. Join Sr. Jane Schlosser, RSM at the Carmelite Spiritual Center in Darien on Wednesday, March 9th from 9:30 am to 1:30 pm. What can be new about our relationship to God, the needy, and our own personal growth? The cost of $40.00 per person includes Eucharist, distribution of ashes and lunch. Register by March 1st by calling 630 969-4141.

PRAYER SHAWL MINISTRY We had our shawls blessed and displayed after Masses so people could see what we are about. We will give the shawls to people in need and will con-tinue to do so. We have two meeting times for you to get involved. They are Tuesday, March 1st at 1:00 pm in Langan Hall and Wednesday, March 2nd at 7:00 pm in the Counting Room of the rectory. If these times do not work for you, this is a ministry that can be done at home on your schedule. For those who do not know how to knit or crochet, we have ladies that are willing to teach you. Just bring your spirit and we will get you started. Shawls are not for sale, but donations would be accepted to buy yarn. If you decide that you want to make a donation, please put the money in an enve-lope marked “Prayer Shawl Ministry” and put the en-velope in the Sunday collection or drop off at the rectory. If you have any questions, please call Sue Cerny at 447-6503.

ST. VINCENT DE PAUL Spring is around the corner and that means the “Friends of the Poor” Benefit coming on April 3rd. The ticket price of $85.00 includes cocktails, hors d’oeuvres, silent auction and pick-a-prize, the play Aida and dinner. The dinner and play are at Drury Lane Theatre, 100 Drury Lane, Oakbrook Terrace. Raffle tickets are available to purchase at $10.00 each or 3 for $25.00. Prizes are $5,000, $1,000 and $500. Annual Catholic Appeal 2011

This week, you are asked to review the Annual Catholic Appeal brochure that you will receive with your bulletin today. The theme of the campaign is: “…seek first the kingdom of God…” (Matthew 6:33). Please spend some time this week reflecting on the Annual Catholic Appeal. While funding a number of Archdiocesan ministries, the Appeal supports parish ministries that provide religious education to children, youth and adults in economically disadvantaged communities. It is also one of the largest philanthropic sources of financial assistance for Catholic schools in the Archdiocese. Please remember that the Annual Catholic Appeal campaign is much different than a one time spe-cial collection. It is a pledge campaign where you can make a gift payable in installments. As you review the work enabled by your contribution to the Annual Catholic Appeal, please reflect on God’s gifts to you. He has given you all that you have. Your gifts to our parish, to the Archdiocese and to the work of the Church throughout the world are given in gratitude for the continuing gifts that God gives you. Sometimes it is difficult to envision how one pledge can help an organization the size of our Archdio-cese, how it can make a real difference. But each pledge does make a difference because all parishes participate in the campaign and the gifts of many enable our Archdiocese to deliver needed ministries and services. Our combined gifts not only signify our gratitude to God, they fund a significant portion of the work of our Archdiocese. After our parish goal of $36,000 is reached in cash, 100% of the additional funds come back to our parish to help to fund our needs. If you received your pledge form in the mail, please complete it and mail it back or bring it to Mass next weekend. For those of you that did not receive a mailing or have not had time to respond to it, we will conduct our in-pew pledge process at all Masses next weekend. Thank you for your prayerful consideration and generous response.

“Jesus tells us that we are not to worry about the things of this life but must first seek the kingdom of God. Let us all join together in helping to share His Gospel message through our financial support of the 2011 Annual Catholic Appeal of our Archdiocese. We pray to the Lord.”

FOOLISHNESS Sometimes the idea of repentance seems old-fashioned, naïve, even foolish. But if you’re looking for real foolishness, you’ll find it in today’s readings. We begin with Leviticus and the admonition, “Take no revenge and cherish no grudge” (Leviticus 19:18). We’ve heard that message before, of course, so we might forget how far it is from the so-called “practical realities of life.” Saint Paul warns us about being practical, though. Whoever considers oneself wise had better “become a fool,” because “the wis-dom of this world is foolishness in the eyes of God” (1 Corinthians 3:18, 19). This “foolishness” continues in the Gospel: “Offer no resistance to one who is evil” (Matthew 5:39). In fact, offer the other cheek when you’ve been slapped. Hand over your coat as well as your shirt. Be like God, who sends sunshine and rain on the bad as well as the good. “So be perfect,” says Je-sus, “just as your heavenly Father is perfect” (5:48).

THE HEAVIEST LOAD

A chip on the shoulder is

the heaviest load anyone

can carry. —Anonymous

One of the effects of the sacrament of Confirma-tion is that "it gives us a special strength of the Holy Spirit to spread and defend the faith by word and action as true witnesses of Christ, to confess the name of Christ boldly, and never to be ashamed of the Cross" (Catechism of the Catholic Church, 1303). This effect has been de-scribed as making the confirmed person "a sol-dier of Christ".

All powerful God, Father of our Lord Jesus Christ,

by water and the Holy Spirit you freed your sons and daughters from sin

And gave them new life. Send your Holy Spirit upon them

to be their helper and guide. Give them the spirit of wisdom and under-

standing, the spirit of right judgment and courage, the spirit of knowledge and reverence.

Fill them with the spirit of wonder and awe in your presence.

(Rite of Confirmation)
