INTRODUCTIONIn our school we don’t have many students who have conflicts.

However, some conflict situations come to produce, predominantly in the playground.

Due to all this, teachers’ team held a meeting to try to find a solution.

The completed road from then until now has not been without difficulties, but everyone’s effort gave its fruits.

…MEDIATION TEAMS

But…what is mediation?

It is a method of solving conflicts applicable to situations where persons with an argument oe dispute have reached a point where communication is blocked or it is very difficult, so the mediator helps that the parties in conflict seek a solution by their own.

We, currently, participate in the project “School, space of peace”, with a coordinator (Mª Ángeles Pedraza), teacher of the school and she manages…

OBJECTIVES

1. Prevent violence.

3. Promoting a good climate for partnership.

2. Teaching necessary strategies and skills.

Page 4: School peer mediation in CEIP Europa

STAGES Opening of the mediation. Exhibition of the situation from the perspective

of each part. Reformulating or reconsideration of the

situation. Evaluation and selection of options. Elaboration of a proposed agreement. Monitoring of the implementation of the

agreement.

Page 5: School peer mediation in CEIP Europa

Characteristics of the Negotiation

Informal process. Structured. It is voluntary. It is confidential. It is cooperative. It gives prominence to the

parts.

Page 6: School peer mediation in CEIP Europa

IT HELPS TO MAKE DECISIONS ABOUT YOURSELF.

PROMOTES THE RESPECT AND COOPERATION (WIN/WIN SOLUTIONS).

THE COMMITMENTS ARE ASSUMED AS THEIR OWN, NOT BE IMPOSED.

IT FAVORS JUSTICE, NOT THE POWER.

VALUES OF MEDIATION

Page 7: School peer mediation in CEIP Europa

They will help the parties to express their positions, interests and values. They help to generate trust among them.Facilitate the search for solutions, not advised.

FUNCTIONS OF MEDIATORS

Page 8: School peer mediation in CEIP Europa

WHAT A MEDIATOR DOESN’T HAVE TO DO?

1. Asking too many questions. Practice active listening and let

the parties to express in their own way.

2. To ask too many whys Rather than ask “Why have you

insulted?”, better to say “tell me”.

3. Discuss with one of the parties.Don’t show disgust, don’t oppose to one of the parties.

Page 9: School peer mediation in CEIP Europa

4. Making judgments.Don’t say:“One of you must be lying”, but: “Both of you have different points of view about what happened”“These are nonsenses...”; in its place: “ If this is interesting for you, you can see it in another time”.

5. Give advice.Instead of saying: “You must remember the important thing is mutual respect”, make it as: “How do you like your relationship would be in the future?”

Page 10: School peer mediation in CEIP Europa

6. Threaten the parties.Don’t say: “If you don’t solve this you’ll have to fix it with a record of punishment”. On the other hand, you can say you agree to resolve it, it may be hard, but in spite of this, we have come a long way and it is important that we continue in this direction

7. To force reconciliation. When the parties reach an agreement, you should not be forced this. Not you ask them which are friends again, ask or give excuses or give your hands, ask them: “What you can do to find you happier?”…“What solutions would be fairer to both parties?”

Page 11: School peer mediation in CEIP Europa

Evaluation of solutions.

•Reflection serene about the proposed solutions.

•Discard those that don’t ensure satisfactory.

•Take those where there is a greater consensus.

Search for solutions.

•Solutions will be assimilable by parties to the dispute of the conflict.

•They will take into account their feelings, needs, interests and values, recommendations…

RECOMMENDATIONS

Page 12: School peer mediation in CEIP Europa

Formulation of the problem•knowledge of the different perspectives of the conflict..

•Each person must make explicit his vision aobut him or herself. Creating a positive

atmosphere that allows to address the conflict.•It must be motivation and having a consensual procedure.

Clarify and define the dimensions of the conflict.•Select key dimensions of the conflict.

•To get that we have to find the elements of agreement and disagreement.

To get the MEDIATION to be part of the daily life of the centre we will follow some series of steps:

- It is important to activate and to publicize the mediation from the team created for this purpose and to get this is interesting:
