GRAPHIC DESIGNFrequently Asked Questions

What is required to apply to the Graphic Design program? As part of the application process, you are required to submit a layout test, a drawing test, as well as a portfolio. There is a portfolio assessment fee, payable to Algonquin College, that is due with your submission. A detailed guide with examples of how to submit your portfolio can be found online: http://www2.algonquincollege.com/mediaanddesign/files/2011/03/GraphicDesignPortfolioBooklet-2010-web.pdf

How many pieces should I put into my portfolio? The portfolio submission is a sampling of 10 to 15 of your best pieces of art and design. Artwork should demonstrate creativity, neatness and how you have developed your concepts. The portfolio should also show your hand-skills and how well you can sketch out your ideas. Included with your 10 to 15 pieces should be a drawing and layout test (original drawings are required for this). You can find specifics requirements on our website and in the link above.

What sort of things are you looking for in a portfolio?A variety of work is preferable. You can include photocopies of photography, collage, painting, mixed media as well as drawings, sketches and thumbnails. Incorporating some of your drawings into a layout with type or photography (such as a magazine cover layout, CD cover design, product label, etc) is a great way to further demonstrate your creativity and ability. What is not acceptable in a portfolio?• Loose samples in a garbage bag or rolled in a mailing tube• Scrapbooks or binders of work• 35 mm slides of artwork or CDs• Any form of sculpture or fabric arts, oil paintings, framed or unframed. Please supply photographs or photocopies of any large pieces like paintings or sculptures. Do not send originals of any work. Do I need to purchase a computer? This is a mobile learning program which engages students in a collaborative, elearning environment which will help them become skilled, confident users of the kinds of technology they are expected to use in the workplace. Students are required to supply and use a mobile learning device that meets minimum hardware specifications. Information regarding computers can be found on our website.
