A Message from Your PrincipalWe are pleased that spring has officially arrived and that we are now enjoying warmer temperatures and more hours of daylight and seeing some buds on the trees in our neighbourhood. It is also wonderful to see more students walking to and from school every day, getting physical exercise and also reducing traffic and pollution in our community. Keep it up, Curling!

We are very sad to say good-bye to one of our Lunchroom Supervisors, Mrs. Firth, who has worked in the Kindergarten classes since we opened. We will miss her here at Alvin Curling PS and wish her well in her new position. We welcome Ms. Sadaf who will be replacing Mrs. Firth for the remainder of the school year.

Students in Grades 3 and 6 are busy preparing for the EQAO Literacy and Math assessments that will be starting on May 25th. We will be hosting an EQAO Information Night in the evening of Thursday, April 28th for parents of Grades 3 and 6 students. We hope to see you there! In the meantime, if you would like more information on the provincial assessments, please visit www.eqao.com.

This month, Cooperation is the character trait that we will be focusing on at Alvin Curling PS. Cooperation is demonstrated when people work together for a common purpose or to achieve a common goal. Students show cooperation at school and at home by working and playing peacefully with others and by being respectful. They can show cooperation by helping to find a compromise when there are disagreements. Being able to cooperate makes life more enjoyable and helps our students accomplish more.

Coming Soon - Curling Water Bottles For Sale!

Did you know that an average Canadian family uses 500 plastic water bottles in a year? One person consumes about 167 plastic water bottles each year? It takes 450 years for a plastic water bottle to decompose in a landfill site, and 90% of plastic hasn’t been recycled.

We will be selling blue stainless steel reusable water bottles with the Curling Timberwolves logo in white for $8.00 each. We will begin selling these water bottles in a few weeks - listen to the announcements for more information. Funds raised above our costs will go to support the ACL’s SOPAR fundraiser, raising money towards providing a community in need with safe drinking water.

Additional PA Day

An additional Professional Activity Day (P.A. Day) has been added to the calendars of all schools in the TDSB.

All TDSB schools will have a newly designated P.A. Day on Friday, April 15, 2016. This additional P.A. Day has been mandated by the Ministry of Education as a result of provincial labour negotiations.

All TDSB schools will be closed to students on Friday, April 15, 2016. On this day, teachers will be taking part in professional development on provincial education priorities identified by the Minister of Education.

Most Before-and-After School Programs will offer full-day care for children currently registered in their program on the P.A. Day. Please speak to the YMCA for further details.

Details on the school year calendar can be found on the TDSB website at: www.tdsb.on.ca/AboutUs/Calendar.

April’s Character Trait focus:

Cooperation

“Great discoveries and

improvements invariably involve

the cooperation of many minds.”

Alexander Graham Bell

Our Cooperation assembly is scheduled for Friday, April 29th.

Your Community

The Grade 6 students in Mrs. Hale’s class are studying eco-awareness in our French class. We learned that our world is full of garbage and we would like to help the world be more eco-friendly. We will be selling reusable water bottles to the students in our school with the amazing Alvin Curling Timberwolves logo on it. Our class thinks that it’s a great way to help our environment and reduce the use of plastic at our school. Many students at schools bring disposable plastic water bottles everyday which wastes a lot of plastic.

Physical Education UpdatesFebruary was fitness month for our primary and junior students. Students participated in discussions about how to improve their personal fitness and why staying active on a daily basis is so important to our health.  The primary students participated in a daily CN Tower climb.  Students tried to stay active at fitness stations for as long as possible in an attempt to climb as high as possible, up the tower.  The majority of our primary classes were able to achieve 20 consecutive minutes of activity, which equalled climbing halfway up the tower.  Well done!

Junior students used a Crossfit focus to learn about the fitness components called Muscular Endurance, Muscular Strength/Power and Cardiovascular Endurance.  Each week, stations were set up with exercises that helped to improve a specific fitness component.  Students completed the circuit as many times as possible in 10 minutes and the top scores of each grade were recorded on our fitness charts in the gym.  It was an impressive demonstration of fitness by all students, which made Mr. Young very proud of you all!

School Advisory

Council NewsThe Junior students voted to watch The Good Dinosaur during the movie night on March 10th. The evening was very enjoyable for all, and successful once again, with supplies from World Famous Pizza and Cineplex Odeon Morningside.

We’re looking forward to our school dance-a-thon that will be held on Thursday, April 14th. Pledge forms will be going home with students in the first week of April. Thank you in advance for your support of this fundraiser.

Although, spring only officially sprung not too long ago, plans for the Alvin Curling Spring Fun Fair is already underway. Stay tuned for exciting details!

“GoldiRocks” Rocked! On March 8th, our primary students in Kindergarten, Grades 1, 2, and 3 went to experience Education Arts Canada’s full-scale theatrical performance of “GoldiRocks” at the P.C. Ho Theatre.

True or False? Our students listened quietly to the wonderful performance on the stage.FALSE! Our students laughed heartily, sang enthusiastically and danced rhythmically (and comically!) in the theatre…in addition to listening quietly when the performers were speaking.

Our students developed a greater understanding and appreciation of drama.TRUE! Our students thoroughly enjoyed responding to the music of “GoldiRocks” prior to the trip, during the wonderful performance and after the trip with classroom reflection activities. It was another fantastic musical learning opportunity for our students here at Alvin Curling.

Here are a few “GoldiRocks” reviews: “I liked the song ‘Temper Tantrum’ because I liked the tune of it and I felt like I was in a rush.” (Karcihan, Gr.1)“The ‘Once Upon A Time’ song made me happy and it also reminded me of my family.” (Monika, Gr.2)

“I really liked GoldiRocks because it was fun to dance.” (Mahira, Gr.1)“My favourite song was ‘Grin and Bear It’ because the little bear’s mom did the splits and that was SO cool.” (Kavya, Gr.1)

“It made me dance and jump because of the fun songs”. (Morgan, SK)
