In Literacy we have been examining the use of Aboriginal symbols. We researched the various symbols used by Aborigines and used these to create stories.
In Numeracy we created maps using Aboriginal symbols and investigated the use of symbols and a key to help navigate.
In Science we have followed a procedure to make our own more ‘eco-friendly’ plastic. We added vinegar (acid) to warm milk (colloid) which produced a type of plastic called ‘casein plastic’.
Our social focus this week (and over the holidays) is to show respect to your elders.

Plastic experiment By Sienna, Ella and Charli
In 3/4 we’ve been making casein plastic in science. We have
completed a step by step procedure to produce the plastic. And
here how we did it:
Ingredients:
Half a cup of milk
Vinegar
A jar, small tub
Cloth
Microwave
Measuring cup
Measuring spoons
Thermometer
Food dye (optional)
A mold (optional)
Salt (add if you don’t want it to go mouldy)
Method (Charli Pou)
Measuring half a cup of milk and add to glass jar. Heat milk to
65 degrees and add 2 tbs of vinegar then stir.
Observations (Charli Pou)
Chunks of milk were on the top then the rest on the bottom
with the vinegar. So they separated, then we put the solids in
molds, but we drained the milk through a cloth first.
It would be great if we can invent a new eco-
friendly type of plastic.
Please start recycling SOFT PLASTIC! It is so easy and you’ll be amazed how much
less waste you’ll have in your red bin. Here’s a list of what can be recycled:

From the Principal What a busy term it has been. In addition to our normal, exciting class learning programs we have had NAPLAN: school, ENE and
state cross country events; ENE Country Gold selections; the lunch-time Make Me studio and associated sewing, coding, chess,
design and repair workshops ; the school disco and various delicious pop-up canteens; sporting schools surf groms; lots of
excursions out and about on our school bus and a visit from a National Parks officer to work with our grade 5/6 class at Moulting
Lagoon on a very cold day in June. And of course there were reports and parent/teacher/child conversations this week. We hope
you liked the new report format; I hear great reports from teachers about students coming along to these meetings to talk about
their future learning goals. It is, after all, their future that we are talking about so best to keep the children empowered and
engaged in their own learning.
And there is much to look forward to in term 3 too. Once again teachers will be planning interesting and engaging learning
programs for each class that aim to optimise the learning opportunities for each child at their own starting point. We publish the
learning intentions in our school newsletter each week to encourage parents and carers to engage in conversations with your
child/ren about what they are learning. By showing that you value their learning you will be immediately helping them get the
most out of the learning experiences on offer. The Australian Mathematics Competition will be held in week 1 next term and the
Chess Tournament will be held at St Marys in week 2 on 1st August. Grade 5 and 6 students will be going on camp to Spring Beach
in week 3. We will host the Family Planning Growing Up program in week 6 as well as the Braveheart Ditto program and the Young
Scientists here in the same week. Week 6 will be busy because the External Review panel will be here on Monday 28th too. Parents
are encouraged to be part of that review process so please stay tuned early next term for a timetable that will indicate times you
could come to the school to talk with them. The Country Gold carnival will be in week 9.
Scott Goldsmith will return next term and I would like to thank Sandra, Mel and Tarquinne for stepping up to keep the school clean
and functioning in his absence. Teacher staffing next term will remain the same except for my departure. The new principal, Rob
Presswell, will arrive at the beginning of term 3. I thank you all for making me feel so very welcome and I will miss the friendly,
respectful students. I have learnt so much about teaching and learning in the primary school context from the wonderful teachers
at this school. Please accept my apologies as I will unfortunately not be able to be at the end of term assembly on Friday afternoon
as I have to be in Hobart for a Department of Education meeting. I could not change the date or time. It is with great sadness that I
say goodbye to the Bicheno community but I will be back for holidays as usual next January. I might see you then.
