Dear Parents and Carers,

Welcome to back to school for 2018! I would also like to extend a warm and sincere welcome to all

the new families who have recently joined our wonderful school community. I trust that everyone

has had an enjoyable and relaxing break and that the students are excited about the year ahead.

This year will be a year where the community will witness the school’s determination in maximising

student learning like never before.

I am pleased to announce that a number of strategies will be put in place to achieve this and

include:

• Jane Moore as a Curriculum Leader who will be working in classrooms collaboratively with the

teachers to ensure that our leadership team supports and promotes high quality programs.

• A team of support staff to further assist in the provision of differentiated instruction for those who

need small group or individual assistance with their learning.

• Purchasing of resources to ensure students have the best available tools to support and enhance

their learning, especially in the area of flexible learning spaces.

• Ongoing targeted teacher professional learning to ensure our teachers have the skills and

knowledge to maximise student learning potential.

Parent Information Sessions

The teachers are looking forward to meeting parents and carers at the parent information sessions

to be held after school in Week 3. These sessions are a great opportunity to meet your child’s

teacher and get information about learning requirements, teacher expectations and what is

planned for the year ahead. Further information about this was sent home earlier this week.

School Swimming Carnival

The school swimming carnival was held at Peninsula Leisure Centre on Monday 5th of February. It

was a wonderful day with great community spirit. Thank you to the organising teachers on Stage 2

for their effort and to the parent support on the day. Congratulations to those students who will be

heading off to the Zone Carnival in March!

If you are volunteering to assist with school activities both in and out of the classroom /school you need to complete a Working with Children Check, A Volunteer Declaration and a Drivers Declaration (if offering to transport students to excursions). The Working with Children Check requires 100 points of identification and a completion of a declaration at the online at: www.kidsguardian.nsw.gov.au. When completing an online application you need to take the printout to Service NSW to obtain a WWCC clearance. This is valid for 5 years and is free for volunteers. Bay Public School will be participating in the The Premier’s Reading Challenge again this year. For any new

families who are unfamiliar with the Reading Challenge, it is a NSW Government initiative to encourage a

love of reading for leisure and pleasure in students, and to enable them to experience quality literature. In

2018 the challenge will run differently in K-2 and 3-6. Class teachers, and myself, will read the prescribed 30

Reading Challenge texts to K-2 during class time and library lessons. Students will also be given the oppor-

tunity to read these texts independently. Reading Challenge books will still be available for K-2 to borrow,

but it will not be necessary to record these books on your own reading log at home. However students in 3-

6, who are required to read 20 books independently, will still be expected to complete their own personal

reading log of books read. This may be recorded on a paper reading log or directly on the Reading Challenge

website. Information notes regarding the Reading Challenge will be sent home next week and further de-

tails can be found at; www.schools.nsw.edu.au/premiersreadingchallenge.

If anyone has located any overdue library books during the school holidays can you please return them

ASAP. Students with outstanding library books will not be permitted to borrow until their book/s are re-

turned or an explanation from home has been provided. Just a reminder, the borrowing period for books is

2 weeks and books can be renewed if necessary. Borrowing limits are as follows; Kindergarten 1 book, Year

1-2 two books, Year 3-4 three books and Year 5-6 four books. Please ensure if your child is in K-2

they bring a library bag for borrowing. Students can view their loans and check their over dues by

accessing the Oliver Library system via their Student Portal at home. I will be reminding students

The Empire Bay PS Training and Concert Band will resume lessons on Monday the 12th of February. Stu-dents who hire an instrument through the school will receive it during their first band rehearsal or tutorial on Monday 12th Feb. All hire fees must be made to the school office before students receive their instru-ment. Hire Fees for Semester One (terms 1 + 2) are $120. Once the Conservatorium has confirmed all tuto-rial details, a note with more information will be sent home. If you have any questions please contact the school office.

Welcome back!! Hope everyone had a great holiday. This year we a pleased to announce that our P&C meetings will be held on the 3rd Tuesday of every month (excluding holidays) with alternative day/night meetings. Our First Meeting for this year will be Tuesday 20th February @ 7.00pm in Cooinda. Attending P&C meetings are a great way of finding out what is happening within your child’s school. It is also a great way to make new friends and to be a part of our wonderful school community. We hope to see many more new faces, with our new alternative times. Our first event for the year is a School Disco to be held on Tuesday 20 March, keep an eye out for further details in the next coming weeks. We have an exciting calendar of events for the students as well as parents/carers to participate in such as: Easter Raffle - Mother’s Day Stall & Raffle - Bush Dance -Father’s Day Stall & Raffle -Mufti/Crazy Hair Day Camel Calendars - Christmas Raffle

Our annual Swimming Carnival was held last Monday, 5th February at the Peninsula Leisure Centre. Stu-

dents from Years 3-6, as well as some keen Yr 2 swimmers, attended the carnival. The carnival was a great

day for all involved. Well done to all our students for supporting each other through cheering their houses

on and by competing in the races. Remember that coming first in a heat doesn’t automatically mean that

your child will come first in an event or that they will necessarily make it to the Zone level as all races are

based on times. Thanks to the ever-dedicated parent helpers for assisting with time-keeping duties, we

couldn’t have held the event without your help. Thanks also to the P&C for keeping our teachers well fed

and energised throughout the day. The Zone Swimming Carnival will be held on Tuesday 13th March.

Those students who are selected to compete at Zone level will be informed as soon as results are availa-

ble.
