Prep News

Prep students have had a very busy week, involving guests visiting their

rooms.

On Thursday, Raceview hosted a Walker Learning Approach Network

Meeting. The students and teachers enjoyed the opportunity to showcase

their learning as they opened their classrooms to leaders and teachers from

other schools. Walker Learning is an approach that personalises learning and

is committed to developing children who can think for themselves and for

others, can create and imagine and who are strong in their literacy and

numeracy skills.

On Friday, the Prep classes held a Father's Day celebration for all of the fathers, grandfathers, uncles and other special

males in the students’ lives. Many fun activities were organised, such as making and flying paper planes and kites, bubble

blowing, skipping, and some even spent some time playing together in the sandpit and on our playgrounds.

Everyone had a great afternoon!

Year 1 News

1B have thoroughly enjoyed buddy

reading with the students of 2B.

Teaching and Learning at Raceview

In the last newsletter, I wrote about Visible Learning, the ‘Bump it Up Wall’ and the ‘Learning Walls’ that teachers are developing in

their classrooms. I hope you were successful in asking your children about this and that you received some informative answers

from them!

One of the skills that teachers have been focussing on during reading has been ‘Think-Alouds’. This is a skill that teachers use in

their teaching and that children learn to use when they are striving to comprehend information.

‘Thinking is invisible, so teachers have to talk about their thinking. By listening to a teacher think, students

are guided through the same processes that the experts use, as if they were apprentices.’ (Fisher, Frey, Hattie.

‘Teaching Literacy in the Visible Learning Classroom’. 2017)

An example of a Think-Aloud could be, ‘I am going to match my expression to the

words, so that I can understand the character’s feelings.’ Perhaps you could try this with your children when

you are reading aloud to them.

Assembly

On Assembly this week, we were all inspired by 3D who told us some of the things that they are grateful for. This was a great way

to start the week! Thank you to Mr Daley and 3D for such a stimulating class item.

Thank you also to those parents who are able to make it to our assemblies. Your presence is very much appreciated and is very

special for the students.

Holidays

With only two weeks to go until the September holidays, I would like to ask for your assistance with keeping our students focussed

on their learning. It is important for all students to continue to attend school every day, as the learning at Raceview never stops!

We appreciate your assistance with this.

It is that time of year again when postings for 2019 are allocated. If you will be moving at the

end of the year, please let me know via email so that I can assist in preparing your child for the

move. This can be a stressful time for some students and extra support can be provided to try

to make the transition as easy as possible.

Preparation for High School

Just a reminder to all, Bremer High School will soon be conducting interviews for year 7 in 2019. To book an interview, please go

Defence Club

Defence Club has been running every Tuesday and Wednesday at second

NADIOC week. The students also constructed cardboard houses and

discussed the various types of houses they have lived in. As a group, we

chatted about preparation for postings. Please encourage your child to attend

the craft activities where they can bring, meet and make new friends.

BOOK WEEK FUN!

We had a wonderful time celebrating reading during Book Week.

We saw wonderful costumes, recognised our

Grandparents and their support,

in the Mini-Garden challenge.

Thank you to everyone who supported

and visited us here in the Library.

It was wonderful seeing so many of you popping in

to join in the celebrations.

Here are some photos to show some snippets

of the amazing time we had.

On Thursday 24th August some members of the Senior Choir participated in Singfest 2018.

Singfest is an opportunity for primary school students to participate in a massed choral

After learning some set pieces, several schools came together to participate in a one day workshop with a

guest conductor and accompanist. This year there were almost 200 students performing for family and

friends at the end of the day.

Our guest conductor for this year was Paul Jarman.

Paul is an Australian musician/composer and conductor who is passionate about choral music.

This year’s participants were:-

Samara Bliss, Madi Brewster, Kelly Cameron, Hayley Dalziel, Atalaya Galvin, Scarlett Howard,

Calais Lalor, Isabella Tilly and Olivia Weise.

Congratulations to all of the participants who did their school proud!

These guidelines have been set for the health of

fellow students and staff.

Thank you for your support in this matter.

HOW TO USE THE LOADING ZONE

Your passenger pickup zone / 2 minute zone allows for the quick pick up of children during congested peak school "let out" times.

THE CONCEPT Vehicles move slowly along the loading

zone towards the front of the queue Children see the vehicle and are ready to

get in The vehicle can be stationary for a

maximum of two minutes only Motorists "give each other a fair go" RESPECT THE TIMING Do not stop for more than two (2) minutes Do not park in the zone and walk away

from the car PICKING UP AND LOADING BAGS Plan your arrival time - Does it have to be

before students are released from class?

Do you have older children? Could you ask them to be ready and waiting 15 minutes after school gets out?

You can get out of the vehicle only to assist the children to load bags

If your child is not waiting please drive

away and return to the queue or park legally and walk to collect them

Never double park to pick up children – it is illegal and dangerous

The ‘Look Out’ Steps:

Queue and display your family name tag on the passenger side sun-

visor. These will be distributed to parents/carers in the pick-up zone.

Wait while your children are called

Stay in your car until your children arrive

Load your children & their bags without delay

Ensure seat belts are secure then leave safely

If your children are not ready, leave the zone and rejoin the queue

Things to remember:

It is a 2 minute loading zone

If your children are not able to be loaded within two minutes, drive

out of the zone

Find a parking space elsewhere, or drive off and rejoin the back of

the queue

Be considerate and do not overstay your time in the loading

zone

IMPORTANT INFORMATION

LOOK OUT PROGRAM

As you are aware, Raceview State School has implemented the ‘Look Out’ program from the 2 minute

loading zone in the car park off Bottlebrush Court (near the Prep buildings). This is to further enhance the

safety of our students at pick up time in the afternoon, by providing parents and carers with the option of a

quick and safe way of collecting their children.

To support parents and carers using this program, Prep students are no longer required to be signed in and

out in the morning and afternoon. New arrangements to ensure a smooth and, most importantly, safe drop-

off and pick-up are listed below.

In the morning at 8:45am, Prep students enter the Prep area and report to class.

In the afternoon at 2:55pm:

Parents / carers can still collect children from the classroom;

All other students will be walked to the Pick-up waiting area where they will be supervised:

Students being collected by car will wait until a parent / carer arrives;

Students catching buses wait until their after school care bus arrives;

Students walking home with siblings or parents / carers leave the waiting area and meet in a

pre-arranged place in the school.

Please note – parents / carers of students in any year level are welcome to use the pick-up zone in

the afternoon if this is more convenient. Students will need to wait in the designated waiting area until their

parent / carer collects them.

‘Look Out’ can only work with the co-operation of everyone who uses the zone and a commitment to the

program by your school and individuals alike. Please follow these steps:

Queue and display your family name tag on the passenger side sun-visor (these will be distributed to

parents / carers in the pick-up zone)

Wait while your children are called

Stay in your car until your children arrive

Ensure seat belts are secure then leave safely

Things to remember:

It is a 2 minute loading zone

If your children are not able to be loaded within two minutes, drive out of the zone

Find a parking space elsewhere, drive off and rejoin the back of the queue

Be considerate and do not overstay your time in the loading zone

Message to Parents—School Safe Program

Council is continuing to monitor illegal parking around our school.

Please don’t overstay the 2 minute time limit

for dropping off or picking up passengers in the loading zones.

Overstaying can cause traffic congestion and can

frustrate other motorists which can create a dangerous environment for our school children.
