From the Global Solidarity Desk: This past Monday, June 20, was World Refugee Day. To that end, allow me to draw your attention to a few facts. Refugees today are displaced for 17 years on average—almost twice as long as refugees 20 years ago. Half of the 60 million displaced today are children, and this “lost generation” could spend their entire childhood without a place to call home.
While refugees come from everywhere—from Latin America to Afghanistan—the largest group is from Syria. Since conflict broke out there in 2011, 4.1 million Syrians have fled to neighboring countries and another 6.5 million have been internally displaced. Catholic Relief Services has provided short and long-term assistance to more than 1 million people affected by the civil war in Syria:
Education and trauma counseling for children Food and emergency living supplies Shelter and rent assistance Health care Small business grants, business and vocational training Information, translation and legal services
“The scale of the suffering is devastating. As Pope Francis reminds us, there are human faces behind the staggering statistics.” (Kevin Hartigan, CRS regional director for Europe, the Middle East and Central Asia)
While Catholic Relief Services is providing support to those in need, this crisis is turning into one of the greatest hu-manitarian emergencies today. Here are 6 ways you can make a difference in the lives of Syrian refugees. LEARN MORE: The more you learn about this crisis, the more you’ll understand its underlying causes and can spread the word. Continued warfare in Syria, and violence in places like Iraq and Afghanistan, has contributed to the surge of refugees from those countries. Meanwhile, deteriorating economic conditions in places like Sub-Saharan Africa has led people to Europe in search of a better life. Below are some good resources for you.
CRS Support of Syrian Refugees: http://www.crs.org/media-center/current-issues/syrian-refugee-crisis The Beauty of Serving Refugees: http://www.crs.org/stories/refugee-crisis-beauty-serving
DONATE: One of the best ways to help is through donating to accredited nonprofit organizations that are responding to the crisis. More than 90 percent of money donated to CRS goes directly to people in need.
ADVOCATE: For years, countries in the Middle East have been sheltering the largest number of Syrians and Iraqis. CRS is calling on the United States to continue and to expand humanitarian assistance to Syrian refugees in these coun-tries, as well as those burdened by this new migration. Most importantly, the United States should lead concerted dip-lomatic efforts to end the fighting in Syria. But you have a part, too. Write a letter to your representatives to take up the cause. Go to http://www.confrontglobalpoverty.org/ and click on “TAKE ACTION.”
USE SOCIAL MEDIA: Follow and retweet @CatholicRelief and @CRSNews on Twitter for the latest updates on the #RefugeeCrisis that’s reached Europe.
PRAY: Pray for protection for refugees—particularly those fleeing Northern Africa for Europe—as well as for personal transformation as we face the needs of refugees everywhere.
SUPPORT REFUGEES IN THE U.S.: Although CRS works exclusively overseas, there are many ways to help refugees in the United States. Let Capitol Hill know this issue matters to you and we need to do more together. Support organiza-tions such as Migration and Refugee Services and your local Catholic Charities. You can also volunteer to help refugees in your own area through local refugee resettlement centers.

Peter’s Pence Collection In the second collection today, we are supporting Pope Francis in his charitable works. The Peter’s Pence Collec-tion is taken up worldwide to support our brothers and sisters on the margins of society, including victims of war, oppression, and natural disasters. In this Jubilee year of Mercy, the collection is an opportunity to join with Pope Francis and be a witness of charity to our suffering brothers and sisters. Please be generous in to-day's collection. Thank you!

For the Children Have You Read...
Karon, Jan At Home in Mitford
Readers are invited to enter the world of Mitford, a charming village set in the Blue Ridge mountains of North Carolina. Seen through the eyes of Father Tim, an Episcopalian priest and a bachelor, the village abounds in both miracles and mysteries. He feels he is in a bit of a rut with a secretary who treats him like a ten-year-old; he would love a bit more adventure in his life. Enter a dog the size of a small sofa that moves in and won’t go away; a hostile mountain boy suddenly thrust into his care; a growing friendship with an attrac-tive new neighbor; a mystifying jewel heist; and a long-held secret. Suddenly Father Tim may have gotten more than he bargained for. This is the first novel in the best-selling “Mitford series.” The John Walsh Library has the first six books in the series for readers who wish to make return visits. (Call No. FIC-KAR; “New Books” shelf)
Wilcox, Leah Falling for Rapunzel
This non-traditional version of Rapunzel is a hilarious tale told in rhyme and shows how misunderstandings can lead to “happily ever after.” Young children will en-joy the silly text and illustrations in this book again and again. E WIL Ages 4-8.

O God, Beyond All Praising (THAXTED) The text of the hymn O God Beyond All Praising (No. 598) was written by Michael Perry who died in 1996. The words express our love of God through our weekly wor-ship and praise. The text is full of our love for God and celebrates that God has set us free from death. The tune "Thaxted" is named for a town in England where the composer Gustav Holst and his family lived. Holst also used this melody in his orchestral work The Planets rep-resenting the planet Jupiter.
It's not too late to get in on kickball fun! If you're enter-ing grades 6-12 in the fall and you want to play kickball for St. Paul's, email Mike at [email protected] to register.
