Academic Common Market

Study in a specialized field at an out-of-state college,

while paying in-state tuition rates

Is a degree program you'd like to pursue not available in your state? Have you found a degree program at an out-of-state institution, but the higher tuition is a barrier?

Looking for options with lower tuition?

You're in the right place. For more than 35 years, SREB's Academic Common Market has enabled students to pursue out-of-state college degrees at in-state tuition rates, through agreements among the states and colleges and universities.

Search from more than 1,900 undergraduate and graduate degree programs available in the 15 SREB states. It's quick and easy.

To qualify you must:

Be a resident of one of the 15 SREB states.

Select a program eligible for residents of your home state.

Complete the admission process at the institution offering the eligible Academic Common Market program.

Be certified as a resident of your home state by contacting the ACM

coordinator for yourstate of residence.

What is the Academic Common Market?

The Academic Common Market is a tuition-savings program for college students in the 15 SREB member states who want to pursue degrees that are not offered by their in-state institutions. Students

can enroll in out-of-state institutions that offer their degree program and pay the institution's in-state tuition rates. More than 1,900 undergraduate and graduate programs are available for residents of

SREB states. You can easily search programs available for your home state by clicking Search for Programs.

The ACM program is not competitive or merit-based, but applicants must meet state residency and college program requirements.

The ACM reduces the unnecessary duplication of academic programs among participating states, recognizing that it is impractical for any institution or single state to develop or maintain degree

programs in every field of knowledge.

It supports existing degree programs that have the capacity to serve additional students.

It provides access across state lines for programs not available in a student's home state.

First-professional degree programs, such as law, medicine, dentistry, pharmacy and optometry, are

not offered in the ACM and cannot be requested.

Some institutions and states may impose additional acceptance requirements, such as full-time

enrollment status or GPA requirements.

What is my state's certification process?

Acceptance into the Academic Common Market will be determined by degree program availability and

verification of residency.

Generally, you will be required to provide evidence of your residence, providing such documents as a driver's license, voter registration, state tax return or other instruments that the state may require.

Many states do not set a deadline to submit the application to the state ACM coordinator, however, some do. Please check with your state coordinator to determine any deadlines for application

submission.

Application processing time can vary. For existing Academic Common Market programs, please allow

two to three months for processing after you’ve submitted an application. If you are requesting a new program for the Academic Common Market, please allow four to six months for processing time, as

processing for new programs can take longer.

To avoid the last-minute flood of applications (particularly in July and August) and tuition adjustments, it's wise to start the application process early and before registration takes place.

The specific documents required and certification vary with each state.

Visit your state's ACM Web page for more information.

For more information or to apply please visit:

J.F.K. Profile in Courage Essay Contest

The Profile in Courage Essay Contest invites United States high school students to consider the concept

of political courage by writing an essay on a U.S. elected official who has chosen to do what is right,

rather than what is expedient. A “Profile in Courage” essay is a carefully researched recounting of a

story: the story of how an elected official risked his or her career to take a stand based on the dictates of

the public good, rather than the dictates of polls, interest groups or even constituents. The contest

challenges high school students to discover new profiles in courage, and to research and write about

acts of political courage that occurred after the 1956 publication of John F. Kennedy's Profiles in

Courage.

The Profile in Courage Essay Contest meets several Common Core Standards and National Standards in

Social Studies and English and offers a meaningful opportunity for students to develop and enhance

research, writing and critical thinking skills while they deepen their understanding and appreciation of

politics and history.

Eligibility

The contest is open to United States high school students in grades nine through twelve attending

public, private, parochial, or home schools; U.S. students under the age of twenty enrolled in a high

school correspondence/GED program in any of the fifty states, the District of Columbia, or the U.S.

territories; and U.S. citizens attending schools overseas. Past winners and finalists are not eligible to

participate. Employees of John Hancock Financial Services and members of their families are not eligible

to participate.

Requirements

The contest deadline is Wednesday, January 6, 2016.

Essays can be no more than 1,000 words but must be a minimum of 700 words. Citations and

bibliography are not included in the word count.

Essays must be the original work of the student.

John F. Kennedy, Robert F. Kennedy, and Edward M. Kennedy are not eligible subjects for

essays.

Essays must describe an act of political courage by a U.S. elected official that occurred during or

after 1956, the publication date of Profiles in Courage. The official may have addressed an issue

at the local, state, or national level. See Contest Information and Topic Guidelines and Helpful

Tips for Writing Your Essay for more information.

Essays about past recipients of the Profile in Courage Award will be disqualified unless they

describe an act of political courage other than the act for which the award was given.

Essays must have a minimum of five sources.

Source Material

Essays with fewer than five listed sources will be disqualified.

All participants must cite sources they used to research their topic throughout their essay.

Please use parenthetical citations within the text. We can not accept citations in footnote form.

Essays must include a bibliography. Accepted formats include APA, MLA, or Turabian. You must

US JCI SENATE FOUNDATION SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM

2015-16 Scholarship Application Form (Word Format) <<<------ Application Form

Each year, the U.S. Junior Chamber International (JCI) Senate Foundation grants $1,000 scholarships to

graduating high school seniors who plan to continue their education at accredited post-secondary

colleges, universities or vocational schools. The number of grants awarded annually is at the discretion

of the Foundation and must be used for educational expenses in the first year of full-time study. Checks

awarded will be made out in the name of the recipient and the educational institution of the recipient’s

choice.

Applications must come from high school students from States that have a US JCI Senate program (see

link below "State Contact Information") and are U.S. Citizens graduating from U.S. accredited schools.

This may include state approved home school and state approved GED programs, cyber schools, and

overseas U.S. approved schools.

The Foundation is a fully qualified, IRS approved 501©(3) foundation. Our IRS tax ID Number is 38-

2680101. All contributions to the Foundation are deductible for federal income and estate tax purposes.

From September to November of each year, each JCI Senate state organization (or foundation)

distributes to schools and boards of education throughout their state the necessary application forms

for determination of the recipients of scholarship grants. The deadline for return of the completed

application forms to MOST state chairperson is January 15, 2016.

For address to send your application, see the file link above "2015-16 State Contact Information". Use

the first name and address listed under your state.

State Contact Information <<----- File Link for state information

A panel of judge’s reviews each application received in each state and the two top ranked applications

per state are forwarded to the U.S. JCI Senate Foundation. An outside, independent panel of educators

reviews the applications submitted from the states and the winners of the scholarship grants are

selected by that panel.

No limit is set on the number of grant applications that can be submitted by students attending any

given secondary educational institution. Although applications are judged at the state level first,

eligibility is based on a student’s state of residence rather than the location of the college, university, or

vocational school the student plans to attend.

Through 2014, the U.S. JCI Senate Foundation has awarded 300 grants totaling $315,000

The U.S. JCI Senate Foundation is proud of all of its award recipients and, with the continued support of

JCI Senators in the United States and around the world, we look forward to making an even larger

number of scholarships available.

If you have any questions or concerns, please email them to me at [email protected] (do not send

applications to this e-mail)

Mensa Education and Research Foundation

Local Scholarship Program

There are two requirements for applicants:

The applicant must be enrolled in a degree program in an accredited U.S. institution of higher learning during the

academic year following the application date.

The applicant must submit an application and essay explaining his or her career, academic and/or vocational goals.

The scholarship application process opens Sept. 15 and closes Jan. 15. No application forms are

available at any other time. Between September and January, interested individuals can visit

the scholarship application area of this site to determine eligibility and, if eligible, enter the program.

Applicants have until Jan. 15 to write an essay of not more than 550 words explaining their career,

academic and/or vocational goals and how they plan to achieve those goals. For more information,

read the scholarship FAQ.

Local judging

American Mensa's local chapters assemble judging teams of at least three members to review the

applications. The essays are judged on content and also grammar, organization and craftsmanship.

The Local Scholarship Chair refers the best local essays to the Regional Scholarship Chair for

review.

Regional judging

At the regional level, the process is repeated. The regional chair arranges for all of the essays

referred from local chapters to be judged a second time. Regional judges rank the local winners and

nominate the best essays for regional and national awards. These essays are then forwarded to the

National Scholarship Chairs.

National judging

Finally, the National Scholarship Chairs conduct additional rounds of judging to select the regional

and national winners. Each applicant can receive only one Mensa Foundation scholarship per year;

therefore, the winners are chosen beginning at the highest dollar amounts. The next highest scores

receive awards of the next lower amounts, and so on until all the winners are chosen based on the

judges' scores.

The final list of scholarship winners is presented to the Mensa Foundation Board of Trustees, who

certify the winners. Winners are notified by mail and given instructions for claiming their award. They

are required to submit proof of registration in a degree program during the following academic year

as well as proof of U.S. citizenship. After the verification is received, the checks are written and

students receive the funds to help them pursue their education.
