Cowboys Stadium, home to the National Football League’s Dallas Cowboys, is one of the largest domed stadiums in the world, with a total capacity of 110,000 people and seating for 80,000. HKS Architects and the City of Arlington, Texas, which owns the stadium, built the immense structure and Schindler El- evator partnered on the project. Schindler contributed 18 elevators equipped with Variodyn ® Variable Frequency AC Drives and 22 Schindler 9300 ® Advanced Edition escalators to the project, in addition to its LobbyVision™ management tool. During the early phases of instal- lation, it became clear that hoisting escalator equipment from tower cranes would not be feasible. The stadium also required reliable technology that could streamline traffic throughout the building. The 6000 lb.-capacity, 350-fpm elevators provide access to all floors. The 22 escalators move the bulk of the sta- dium’s visitors and are set in specific patterns that allow people to travel through the building without having to move between escalator banks to reach their destination. Variodyn Variable Frequency AC DrivesThe elevators’ Variodyn drives im-

prove the system’s energy efficiency.Saving up to 50% more energy thanalternate drive types, Variodyndrives convert the AC electric supplyto variable-frequency AC with virtu-ally no loss of power. The drives alsooperate more cleanly than tradi-tional DC elevator drive systems. LobbyVisionThe LobbyVision management

tool provides a comprehensive PC-based command station, which al-lows single-point supervision of all18 elevators in real time. Throughthe integration of information andcontrol functions, elevator availabil-ity and performance can be moni-tored from one central location. Theability for building operations man-agement to switch services or accessprivileges for specific elevators iscrucial for special events and VIP at-tendance.

Mobility as ArtThe vertical-transporta-

tion layout developed byDallas-based HKS Architectsincorporated efficient ac-cess for all stadium atten-dees and personnel andenhanced the owner’slong-term vision of the sta-dium as a contemporarywork of art. The elevatorsand escalators extensivelyfeature team colors, alongwith customized elevatorcab interiors with star-shaped destination buttonsthat light up in Cowboysblue. ity boast a range of green features, including: Standard high-efficiency motorsand variable-frequency drives, re-ducing the project’s overall car-bon footprint.

Efficient microprocessors mini-mize the elevators’ energy usagewhen the stadium is empty.

In its first year alone, Cowboys Stadium hosted such diverse events as sold-out concerts, professional soc-cer matches, a college basketball game, the National Basketball Association All-Star game and Super BowlXLV.
